1080 vs 980ti for WQHD(2560x1440)

Recommended Posts

I am constantly monitoring my GP and CPU while in DCS 1.5 and 2.0.

There are HUGE differencies in how DCS uses your hardware and thus you should consider this

when upgrading mainly for DCS.

1.5 hardly ever manages to use more than ~70% of my GPU.

2.0 easily brings my poor 980GTX to the knees with 99% GPU usage.

For 1.5 to utilize my overclocked 980GTX I would need to oc my i7 to 6GHz, round about that.

Where as in 2.0 DX11 can render faster and thus the GPU can produce more frames, up to the point with my i7 that I flood my GPU, which I never could in DCS 1.5.

If you look into the future of DCS 2.x it will be more a GPU dependant game than before that can really make use of fast cards if you also have a very fast CPU.

If I had a i7-4790k @ 4.7 or better I would not have a single frame more in Nevada in most scenarios...the 980GTX is already at saturated.

For such a 20-30% faster CPU compated to my 2600k @ 4.8 I would really consider a 1080

to make use of the CPU power.

I use MSI Afterburner to monitor while in DCS. It fairly easy tells you what your HW does.

It's ridicolous how an 2600k can still saturate a 980gtx in a DX11 game. The 980GTX is not enuff to make me wanna replace my 2600k. Wonder if the 1080 would top out at 75-80% usage with the 2600k and justify a 4790K single core perf. monster

FPS are very picky in DCS and it doesnt take much to make an average 75-80fps to a 35-45 hiccup game. That upfront.

1.5 I have it all to HIGH/EXTREME and shadows MEDIUM, no flat terrain enabled, grass 500 and tress and vis maxed out, MSAA4x 16xAF, 1440p

Average values:

Ka-50: 50-65-80 worst-average-best

Mig15: always over 100, mostly limited at 143.5 fps

Fw190: same...

Huey: same as Ka

Mi8: same as Ka

others I dont fly often enough to give a solid answer

Same settings in 2.0 give better fps with those modules that tax the cpu harder, like Ka50, UH1 etc... those I have like 1/3 more fps and usually 99% GPU usage.

I like 2.x a lot better.... the successor of the 1080 then might be it for me, for now on 1440p

I am satisfied and Gsync irons out most fps hassle, real nice feature.

Actually, if you could just run a 2 minute FRAPS benchmark with this track and post the min/max/avg fps, that would be truly awesome.

Edit: my graphicsw setup is seen in the screenshot. I hope you can run at 1440p :D

Alternatively, you can run it on a single 1080p monitor(I believe your monitors are 1080p native each) and I'll do the same. Then we can compare.

I'll try and get to it later this week mate since free time is very limited for me during the week. I have one machine that has a 4790k at 4.4 with the 980ti and my VR rig is the 6700K at 4.4 now with the 1080. Benchmarks are almost identical in both machines when running the 980ti within 1 or 2 fps so running the test should yield identical marks I would think. Best I can do is 1080p but at such a low rez you probably won't get any useful info since the card will probably not go above 50% utilization. The real tests for these kinds of cards are in VR, at 4k and in surround resolutions.

edit: no idea what language that is in your settings so you'll need to translate so I can get the settings right.

Thinking of 2x 1070 for DCS..

Dcs is single GPU only... reason 1 good card is better than 2 less good cards, 1 card works, lots of games don't work with 2, or are less stable with 2.

To me, sli is all about extra performance if you actually play games it works well with, but still build around single gpu, add the 2nd just because you can.

So If I had the choice (I do, and have pre-ordered a 1080)I'd go with a 1080 over two 1070s, one card just works, never sure if sli will, so then I know I'm getting my money's worth.

Odd my sli setup works wonders in 2.0 may want to look at the sli thread before giving bad advice.

does it work in 1.5?

2.0 only has the nevada map... do we expect 1.5 and 2.0 to merge sometime soon™?

good advice is to know that 1GPU will always work, 2GPUs won't, so it's better to have 1 really good gpu rather than two not as good ones, and only SLI for the boost it gives you in games it actually works with...

unless your goal is to extend the life of the 1 card you already have... then hope the games you play actually show improvement with sli, and no graphics glitches, or game crashes...

or at least have that mindset, so you're not angry that you have a 600$ paperweight when you're playing games that don't support sli.

Works in 1.5 also and the clouds don't flicker anymore with the new clouds enabled via Mustanga mod.

oh cool! may buy 2nd 1080.

I wouldn't say suggesting a single best card vs lesser in SLI is bad advice at all. SLI is a pain in the ass and doesn't work in every game that comes out.

I would 100% say go for one 1080 vs going 1070 in SLI. And this comes from someone with 2 980s SLI, and before that I had SLI too.

I can say that my well overclocked 1080 is not that much better than my well overclocked 980ti. 10-15% at best and only in some games. 0% better in VR or nvidia surround in DCS. I'm a little disappointed to be honest with you.

The only people that will be jumping from a 980Ti to a 1080 are those with more money than they know what to do with.

Have both ROG swift and Acer 4k at 60hz, both with gsync. Noticed that with track ir the 144 Hz on the swift causes less eyestrain after an hour even if actual frame rates are lower. I would rather have the super sharp picture of the 4k, but I have impression it's not realistic with quick head movements long term. Plus the inflight menu (right top corner) text becomes too small. Plus even though both have 1ms response time rating the swift seems to have less lag with identical setting.

Hello people!

Whu can suggest me, which videocard runs DCS at 1080p 60 fps on most maximum settings?

I can do a test on my old msi 970 if you like. I will post results later for you.

I can run dcs on mostly max settings at 60FPS with GTX 980 pretty effectively. I do also have a cpu bottleneck which I could get more FPS if it was updated.

PC specs: Aurora r3, Intel i7 960, 16gb Corair Dominator DDR3, MSI GTX 980.

Yeah I wouldn't upgrade from a 980ti to a 1080...

I have a 780 refrence, skipped the 980ti, was always >< this close to buying it... but the extra 10-25% or so performance of the 1080 over the 980ti puts me over the edge as to FINALLY having a videocard with enough performace to bother with... the 1080 will more than double my framerates, the 980ti won't.

and now that i'm a proud owner of this http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236405 ...well... (sale ends on the 22nd btw)
