For budget reasons, I prefer buying for couple years before upgrading again. I still have a GeForce 660. Not bad, but having some sluttering and slowdowns with DCS2 especially.

I am looking to buy the 1060. Is it a good choice? or should I spend few dollars more on a 1070?

I exclusively fly DCS.

frames per second wise, The 1060 is roughly a 970 or RX480, which are all roughly an overclocked 780ti, the 1070 is roughly a 980ti.

the 1080 and titan X pascal are the only cards that have no comparison...

so, any of those cards make the 660 look like an ancient mayan artifact, and from that point of view, they're all good.

Like I said budget is an issue here. I just can not afford a 800 CAD+ card!

No doubt about it!

But thanks for the advice!

I'm in Canada as well, so I feel you pain, I just went from a 780 gtx to the 1070 and I love it. If you can afford it, it seems to do the job.

I hope you found someone to pass that 780 on to. :)

Bought a GTX1070 as well. I think on caucasus map no card runs perfectly on max details. But with the new format this will change. Over vegas I have at least 60 fps on max details at any time and any place. Average 75-80fps. And with a headtracker its much more important to have 60fps than for any other game. Its important to have this stable performance to avoid stuttering while panning or turning your head. In the most benchmarks and gameplays the GTX1070 has something about 30% more performance than GTX1060. So I prefer the GTX 1070.

Chappy, a quick look at Newegg prices for EVGA nVidia cards (I've found EVGA to be better priced, higher spec, and reliable when compared to their competitors for the past few years) revealed the 1060 for ~$260 and the 980 Ti/1070 for ~$450. One version of the Ti Super Clock with ACX 2.0 cooling is available for $425. My son picked up the Ti a month ago and it kicks my 980 SC's ass. The 980 runs DCS maxed out at 60-90 fps in 1440p. The difference in capability between the 1060 and Ti/1070 is probably about the same. Everything I've read indicated the 980 and 1060 are pretty close in performance. You will see a dramatic improvement from the 660 at 1080p. The only downside I can see is that you will be faced with subpar performance or another upgrade sooner than going the 1070/Ti route. I always factor in future proofing in my GPU buying decisions and can often buy two cards for every three to four cycles. It saves money in the longer run while maintaining decent performance. I doubt you'll regret finding a way to stretch to the 1070/980 Ti or waiting until you can scrape together the extra cash.

Comparing cards is a PITA. Finding the sweet spot in price/performance is always a chore but one that usually pays for the time spent. I've found Tome's Hardware GPU hierarchy chart a useful tool for performance based decisions. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

What about the Pascal architecture of the GTX10 series? Is it worth it? Will DCS profit from it?

DCSW2 certainly does, 1.5 not so much but that is still a large work in progress. I would presume when everything is merged into 2.5 it will all run closer to like DCSW2 runs now.

I get superb performance in DCSW2 with my EVGA GTX 1080 FTW.

I would go with at least a 1070 if you can swing it.

Thank you all for your inputs. I'm still running single screen (+ one for HELIOS), so the 1060 will do the job just fine I think. For about 100 CAD less than the 1070 I think it's a good compromise.
