QuiGon Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 (edited) He was part of a two-ship that was supposed to do ACM-training with another F-5, but he disappeared just 4 minutes after takeoff. Looks like he just flew straight into the mountain. The reason for this is still unclear. It was cloudy between 1000m and 9000m at that time, but no info on the density of the cloud(s), but they talked a lot about IFR-flying in the press conferences. The airbase of Meiringen is located in a valley between high mountains on both sides (the airbase itself has underground hangars inside the mountain). It's not an easy place to fly, especially in IFR-conditions (like most of Switzerland). It was the fourth crash of a swiss fighter jet in the past 3 years. One F-5 of the Patrouille Suisse in June and one F/A-18 in October last year. Both pilots survived. Another two-seat F/A-18 crashed in October 2013 resulting in the death of the pilot and a german flight surgeon.
