brettt777 Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 (edited) I have the F-5 flying around NTTR and have been trying to get the hang of the weapons system but can't get the thing to release a sidewinder. I get a target on radar, aquire it, get the lock light, fly the plane to get the pipper centered, get close enough to get the in range light, get good tone, hold the Missles uncage button, and hit the release... And nothing. No missle release. I have the mode switch in missle, the station switches are on for the wing tips and yes, I do have missles loaded on the aircraft. I know my release button is good cuz I can shoot rockets. What am I doing wrong? I've tried this about a hundred times with the same results; no release. Come to think of it, I couldn't get the sidewinder to fire on the F-86 either the couple times I tried it... probad Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 made sure your tank drop switches are neutral?
ricktoberfest Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 made sure your tank drop switches are neutral? This. If you forgot to change the jettison switch back it won't fire missiles. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
brettt777 Posted October 16, 2016 Author Posted October 16, 2016 Okay, after reading the manual again a few times, I decided that the step I was missing was going from search mode to DM or DG mode on th radar. I don't know why this would be; if I have a lock, in range, and good tone I would think that would be enough to fire. Anyway, I loaded up a couple L-39s (felt kind of weird to be shooting at them. I've worked on them for a living for the last nine years) going after a runway at Nellis. I went through the entire process again only this time, after getting lock and range, I switched to DM mode, maneuvered for tone, uncaged and fired. And it actually fired a missle! Unfortunately the missle apparently didn't get the target memo and flew straight by the target. I tried again on the other plane and got the same results. So... I can fire a missle now, I just need to figure out how to get said missle to track. SFC Tako Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 At 6:00 I fire missiles but I don't have the radar on. Can't understand why you'd need a radar for heatseekers. But then again, maybe something's changed. Maybe I should try some tonight. My Semi-Pro Youtube Channel
ESAc_matador Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 Dont need the radar. Radar is just a tool to help to know we're they are and if you are in range. Also it help assisting with the pipper.
jmijnen Posted October 21, 2016 Posted October 21, 2016 The gunsight has a different radar from the big green screen, pthe big one is just to lead you to a target without any weapons involved whereas the one in your gunsight calculates gun lead / perfect firing range. It allows you to start seeing contacts at 40nmi, then get a lock at 10nmi. That final lock is going to take you right into the target. So, you shouldn't need it. At least, I don't need it. All the times I've been unable to launch, it's because I've forgot to return the drop switch to its neutral position like a dipstick. Other than that, it's really just for gun solutions. Reformers hate him! This one weird trick found by a bush pilot will make gunfighter obsessed old farts angry at your multi-role carrier deck line up!

Isn't the gun solution radar one built in the sight that works seperately and automatically locks if the target is in the sight?
