Hello,

Nice video from Desert Storm featuring VF-32:

Not the best quality footage, but a nice period video. Plus, a brief hassle with USAF F-15s starting at 7:14 - includes some HUD footage of the F-14 taking a gun track on it's USAF opponent...and making the reporter puke. :D

The video quality isn't all that bad. Personally, I think film/tape-based footage captures what life was like "back in the day" better than digital footage does, but that's just me.

Though I have to ask a highly biased question: why is it that I can find several pictures and videos of F-14s (generally F-14As...) gunning F-15s (in training), despite the fact that F-15 pilots widely claim that they never lose to F-14s? Especially since I have yet to see HUD footage of a F-14 getting gunned by a F-15, they even have nicer gun cams. Perhaps I'm not looking the right places, but there is a big disparity between what is said and what images have shown.

I can't help but wonder...

I have noticed the same thing! I have seen video of F-16s getting gun kills against Tomcats but nothing else. If the F-14A could get a gun kill on an F-15, just think what the the B and D could do against the Eagle! Maybe one day when we have both a Tomcat and Eagle module in DCS, we can finally discover the truth. I am also looking forward to see how a Tomcat vs Hornet dogfight would work out.

Didn't that video have instructors in the F-16's vs F-14 nuggets as well? Interesting points none the less.

Well.....just because it hasn't been documented, doesn't mean it hasn't happened :music_whistling:

Gah.... just kidding there. I am under impression (even under the circumstances that most pilots and aviators have big egos) that most of the trashing came after the Tomcat community was "killed off". You know, half the squadrons diced, A-6 drivers in the front seat, no further avionics/electronics/air to air ordnance upgrades, focus on mud moving.... I can't recall anyone down talking the Turkey (and living to tell the tale) in the 70's or the 80's. But who know, maybe it's just an old man's twisted perception.

Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head. Things likely went down hill after the Cold War, especially has technology allowed other platforms (especially the F-15C) to offer the multi-shot capability that was once the exclusive domain of the F-14.

I'm sure F-14 pilots lost to other 4th Gen fighters in training, pilots have spoken to don't claim omnipotence, though they seem pretty confident in a wide range of combat scenarios.

My point was that the pilot of every other 4th gen fighter (F-15, F-16, F/A-18 ) claim that Tomcats are easy prey and never lose to them. The video evidence certainly contradicts that point. I still wonder why they feel the need to say so?

Speculation on my part, but..... maybe some people in the other fighter communities feel...... a "grudge" at the relatively higher publicity that the F-14 got in the mass media and general public? Like the movies (mostly Top Gun and to an extent The Final Countdown), Animation and comics (the Macross franchise)..... So..... it's kinda unfair, the F-14's getting all that fame. And the way general opinions work, is if it's famous it must be good. On the other hand, the general "underground/hipster" opinions work is if it's famous, then it must suck...... and there you go, we have a clash

I'd say if you flew "other" 4th gen and fought and beat tomcats after 1998, good job shooting down a bomber.....

Additionally in training situations the "green" pilots tend to get the priority on flight hours to benefit the most. Rarely does an ACM scenario end up in an ace vs ace scenario.

The other 4th gen fighters are easier to fly and more forgiving in ACM. The F-14 demands you to think more. If a fighter is easier to fly, you tend to improve your skills quicker. I'd say it makes sense that is was tougher to fly the F-14 and you needed to learn how to use both brains best to get the most out of the fight. I'd pick a top F-14 crew over any other 4th gen jet hands down. It just makes sense it takes more to be good in an F-14.
