Hey all

 

I was playing the "how to blow stuff up" mission that someone created (sorry I forget his name). I've played it dozens of times, and I played it once today before this problem occurred.

 

Everything was fine until I came to hover over the ridge to shoot at the MBT Leopards in the mission, and engaged auto-hover. As soon as I engaged auto-hover, at about 40kmh, the helicopter kept wanting to turn to the right.

 

I tried setting the trim again so the direction would update on the auto-pilot but that didn't help. I ended up drifting forwards whilst struggling to keep the heli pointing at the targets and consequently got shot down! :(

 

Does anyone here have any insight as to why the heli would behave like that all of a sudden after being fine on the flight to the target area?

Auto-hover at 40kmh? don't think that will work.

Auto hover is for hovering, 40kph isn't hovering.

I must be misunderstanding your post but I've never had any luck using Auto-Hover unless I am already in a actual hover = less then 10 kph.

Auto-Hover certainly isn't meant to put you into a hover from forward flight, that's not auto-hover.

^^^ It is not auto-hover but hover mode. It is to keep you hover but as aairon said, you have to go below ~10km, trim, and then turn hover mode on.

When you engage hover, circle with a small square inside appears in the hud and a small line will show your velocity vector. When you engage hover the square is in the middle of the circle and this is your hover position which your autopilot is trying to keep. When you engage it with 40km, you are going away from this position too fast and the autopilot is trying to circle back to the point where you engaged hover. I don't know when is this before when you could engage hover with 40km (may be if you were with "game avionics") but currently it is not gonna work and this is how it should be.

No, he's already going 40kph, he's making his own wind.

I can't understand what the issue is it must be a semantic/language thing, because to me the term Hover means something like a stable flight while maintaining a single position in both the vertical and horizontal planes.

So Flying at a forward (or otherwise) speed of 40 Kph is considered flying or crashing NOT Hovering.

There isn't a button you can push (that I'm aware of) that will suddenly stop you from 40Kph and put you into a Hover mode, probably because the autopilot has no clue where it is that you eventually want to actually hover in a single position both horizontally and vertically.

This seems so plain that it leads me to think I'm misunderstanding the question.

With my background I could certianly design a autopilot that would be able to do such a thing the time to achieve hover from x speed both horizontally and vertically would be the only real variable that you could control in flight and it would sort of act like your throwing your chopper into a ballistic trajectory with an ending point in a 3D space set by the amount of time/decay, it is done all the time but I've never heard of it being used in a combat chopper IRL I wouldn't want to be along for the ride with somebody who can't slow down on their own I couldn't imagine the landing.

It must be WIND. It can mess up autohover if you dont trim appropriately beforehand.

 

You dont want to engage hover mode at speeds larger then 20-25 kmh.

 

And you want to trim appropriately beforehand. Wind can prevent autohover pretty drastically, but you can trim your helo to compensate for wind manually and then go hover. The autopilot has got only 20% authority of control to maintain your position so if your trimmed status is 30% away from proper hover, the autopilot wont be able to help keep the helo in one place.

 

Also allow rudder trim in the game options. It is a BIF thing.

Then, allow trim-center mode.

 

And dont forget that heading hold tries to keep one exact heading when you trim and will add small rudder inputs even if you dont know. Disengage it when needed, your helo will be more easily turned.

YOu should be in a fairly perfect manual hover before you apply AutoHover. The more precise and perfect the harsher the wind blows and at a certain wind speed it wont work anymore I guess ( the 20% auth. limit ).

 

You can just fly 40 forward, engage AH and expect it to work, no matter the speed and wind.

That ain't gonna work that way I am afraid.

Why don't you start by reading the thread you're commenting on?

If you had read the thread you would know it has NOTHING to do with wind!

Please read. Had you actually read the thread you would quickly know that he is trying to HOVER at 40Kps! the wind isn't a factor unless there is a weather model for a category 1 Hurricane.
