Dave317 Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 I'm looking to update my GTX 770 to a 1070 in the near future. I've been reading loads of different reviews and can't work out which one I should go for. Is there any in particular that is better than the others and has more potential to overclock? Are there any to avoid? From what I've read some of the EVGA ones have been burning themselves up. Lastly where is best in the UK to buy from?
GeorgeLKMT Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 (edited) If you don't mind higher price and power consumption, MSI Gaming X cards are excellent. The cooler is huge (check your case dimensions), silent and well performing. Overclocking is a little bit of a lottery though, there is no guarantee that any card will overclock well. Just know that the card actually have both 8 and 6 pin connectors unlike other 1070. Edited November 20, 2016 by GeorgeLKMT ■ L-39C/ZA Czech cockpit mod ■ My DCS skins ■
hughlb Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Not a card with theee high speed fans! I can't get my head around why people go for a gigabyte or Asus card. I have had both a gigabyte and gainward gtx1070. The gigabyte was loud and hot, the gainward is faster, cooler, quieter and cheaper. Of course to get all those advantages you have a giant cooler. But unless you were planning to sli at some point, I can't see how that would be an issue. | Windows 10 | I7 4790K @ 4.4ghz | Asus PG348Q | Asus Strix 1080TI | 16GB Corsair Vengeance 2400 DDR3 | Asrock Fatal1ty Z97 | Samsung EVO 850 500GB (x2) | SanDisk 240GB Extreme Pro | Coolermaster Vanguard S 650Watt 80+ | Fractal Design R4 | VirPil T-50 | MFG Crosswind Graphite | KW-908 JetSeat Sim Edition | TrackIR 5 | [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Dave317 Posted November 20, 2016 Author Posted November 20, 2016 Thanks for the replies. What's the deal with the founders edition cards? From what I've read they are the same card but a different type of heat sink and a single fan. Are they better or worse than cards with multiple fans?
hughlb Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Thanks for the replies. What's the deal with the founders edition cards? From what I've read they are the same card but a different type of heat sink and a single fan. Are they better or worse than cards with multiple fans? Worse. Founders edition cards are essentially the reference card. Well made, but the reference card. Then your usual suspects come an apply their aftermarket coolers, overclocks etc. With the GTX1070, all the cards offer similar performance, the GLH edition of the Gainward was my pick for the reasons in my previous post. I've learned to trust what I see with videocards - if it's got a small heatsink it wont run as cool, if it's got a blower style fan, it will be louder, if it's got two big fans it will be quieter. | Windows 10 | I7 4790K @ 4.4ghz | Asus PG348Q | Asus Strix 1080TI | 16GB Corsair Vengeance 2400 DDR3 | Asrock Fatal1ty Z97 | Samsung EVO 850 500GB (x2) | SanDisk 240GB Extreme Pro | Coolermaster Vanguard S 650Watt 80+ | Fractal Design R4 | VirPil T-50 | MFG Crosswind Graphite | KW-908 JetSeat Sim Edition | TrackIR 5 | [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Dave317 Posted November 21, 2016 Author Posted November 21, 2016 What do you think of this card? It seems good value and has 2 fans instead of the reference card type cooler. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/inno3d-geforce-gtx-1070-herculez-twin-x2-8192mb-gddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-068-in.html
hughlb Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 To be honest, I'm not familiar with Inno3D as a brand, but it does come with a three year warranty, which is reasonable. I have experience with MSI - I had a 970 from MSI, and I can definitely vouch for Gainward too. Both have been good. But yes, I returned my Gigabyte after three days - wasn't happy with the fan noise or cooling levels. | Windows 10 | I7 4790K @ 4.4ghz | Asus PG348Q | Asus Strix 1080TI | 16GB Corsair Vengeance 2400 DDR3 | Asrock Fatal1ty Z97 | Samsung EVO 850 500GB (x2) | SanDisk 240GB Extreme Pro | Coolermaster Vanguard S 650Watt 80+ | Fractal Design R4 | VirPil T-50 | MFG Crosswind Graphite | KW-908 JetSeat Sim Edition | TrackIR 5 | [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Dave317 Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 Thanks for all your help. I'll have another look into it but it seems they are all pretty similar.
jaguara5 Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 I updated from msi gtx 770 2gb to msi 1070 founders edition, the performance boost was amazing. The founders edition was the only one that could fit in my pc case, otherwise i would have chosen the msi gaming x.
microvax Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Palit Gamerock and Jetstream are great, their cooler is amazing, but also very big. Runs my 1080 on a 2ghz clock speed below 70degrees on full load. And while doing so practically inaudible. But as said, 3 slot, very big cooler. If you have the space I would go for one of their 1070s with that cooler design. [look for jetstream/gamerock in the name.]. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] *unexpected flight behaviour* Oh shiii*** ! What ? Why ? What is happening ?
Dave317 Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 I've had a look and due to my sound card i only really have enough room for a double slot card. Some of these cards are huge.
BitMaster Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Watercooled cards are usually very thin if that is a factor.
