Sport
So I have no clue what I'm doing, but I've been inspired by a lot of you to pick up some 3D modeling to try my hand at, and possibly lend some objects to the DCS world. My first attempt is a factory building, based roughly on a tank repair facility from the cold war in Ukraine. I've not fully finished the model or attempted to really texture it, but I added some color to give you an idea of what it will eventually look like. Comments and tips are appreciated and I'll certainly be looking for help in the future! Come check me out on YouTube! Twitch! Sport
That's part of the plan. I'd like to work my way up to modeling static aircraft to populate airfields with, like 737s and Gulfstreams. I also want more strategic targets to be able to attack like factories, depots, and power plants which would be likely to be well defended and make for good mission creation. I still have so much to learn about this stuff Come check me out on YouTube! Twitch! Have a listen to the Alert 5 Podcast - YOUR source for the latest combat flight simulation news! =OPS=Slider
It's still good start. The worst is to start modeling something, but once started you want to finish it, otherwise it's waste of time. I'm waiting for my knight in shining armor to make new F-16 model... joey45
Indeed. Start small and work your way up. Buildings are pretty easy..... until you need to model the inside and everything else.... The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Sport
Update: So I've reworked the whole thing, and have applied textures to the model. I still need to finish some of the exterior details, maybe add some faux-interior pieces and want to explore the wide world of lighting. Then a damaged/destroyed model and try to add it into DCS. I think eventually I might do a whole series of factory buildings for people to make a complex for strategic attacks Come check me out on YouTube! Twitch! Eight Ball
Looks great, looking forward to it  BTW, can you solely use bender to create DCS assets ? Find The Links To All My Mods And Liveries Here (in the gallery)
Sport
Looks great, looking forward to it  BTW, can you solely use bender to create DCS assets ? I honestly have no idea... I know I'll need to somehow convert this to an EDM file(?) to insert it, but right now I'm just working on learning to model and texture while I'm on the road for work. This laptop won't come close to running DCS, so I won't be able to see how to add the asset until i get home. Come check me out on YouTube! Twitch! Sport
On a side note, does anyone know if buildings can have a 'damaged' model and a 'destroyed' model or is it just the latter? Sport
Update: Factory is done, I need to make the destroyed model now, probably just going to be a pile of rubble. I want to do a forge/smokestack, and maybe some smaller buildings, and a security fence/wall that people can place and make their own factory complexes for mission creation. Also have no idea how this model will perform or how big of a file it will be (there are a few textures), nor how to export it into DCS. This is what it looks like now: Come check me out on YouTube! TaktLwG 73 Steinhoff
Looks very good! Do you plan to update vehicles as well? Several trucks (good example are the russian EWR and the sa10) are in very bad shape and need an update. And your work looks very promising;)

And your work looks very promising;) I appreciate the votes of confidence, but my skills are so-far limited to simple polygons and structures... Maybe eventually I'll move onto vehicles and aircraft. I think I want my first static aircraft project to be an An-2, we'll see UPDATE: Been working on a new structure for the factory complex, I'll probably continue to add some detail to it, but I want to keep the poly's low so they don't destroy frames too badly. Again, I have only a vague clue how to port these into DCS, nor have I made a damaged/destroyed model. I've had a lot of down-time on this trip, so I've been putting it to good(ish) use. Pikey
Hi Sport, Might I suggest you get the EDM tools plugin for 3DS (you are using that?) and get it into DCS sooner rather than later, the reason is, all those pretty textures you did might be for naught until you work out the DCS method which is not anything like how you can do it in 3DS. And if you are not using 3DS, then work out your importing process to 3DS first as that's also a minefield and you lose data. I worked on something that was created in Maya - same Software company but hell, if they didn't completely make a hash up of how to import something from Maya to 3DS and what you lost. So TLDR, ensure you can get into DCS early on and keep checking it, the textures wont look the same. (plus im not sure if you are usign 3DS the rendering looks alien to me and there is no plugin for anything else but 3DStudio Max. PM mee if you need a wee point for plugin and importign gotchas, I didn't long go through this process myself. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
Pikey
Don't worry about poly count, everyone thinks it's an issue but unless you go round chamfering every pole and corner on some massive object you won't ever hurt performance. It's not a DCS thing, literally graphics cards happily display multiple models of 300K each on screen all the time in DCS and one script can annihilate your frames way easier.
