Help on new A-10 model

Recommended Posts

For those who don't visit the 3d model forum, i moved it here to get some extra attention. We managed to get a new model of the A-10 from krazyscotsman from the project phoenix forum, but there's still quite a lot of work to be done on it before it can be seen in Lock On. Lo-fi is working on the animations but he needs some help on how the real A-10's gears, speed brakes open/closes. So if anyone has any pictures/videos of the A-10 that would be helpful. Here's the list of things he said would help now

A few bits might be handy...

Leading edge slats. I think i've got them right (weren't setup at all in the previous model), but I've only be working from two photos.

Split ailerons. I've been working from a good set of photos, but more are always helpful.

Landing gear. Preferably some shots in transition. A video would be really good.

Any technical data on range of movement for the control surfaces.

Some shots of the cockpit. The model gives me a good reference, but I'd like to be sure its right, as I have to re-do it anyway. 1/5 of all polys in the current model are in the cockpit! 6000 for the ejection seat, 5000 for general stuff, and even 1000 for the joystick. There's not even a pilot yet. I know it needs some level of detail, but polys could be far better spent on areas that are more visible.

Anyone willing to take up the challenge of making the ejector seat in less than a 1000 polys, and adding a pilot?

The current one is a wasteful 6000! It's a fiddly pain in the arse to model, and I've got my hands full just making the aircraft look presentable. It doesn't have a pilot either, so for the moment I'll make something very basic, and concentrate on the airframe.

how similar is the A-10 ejection seat to the F-15s? Maybe ask some help from walmis since he already made a pilot and seat for his F-15.

The two seats are almost identical. The only major difference in appearance is that the A-10s seat is grey, while the F-15s is black. Also, the A-10s seat has canopy breakers on the sides of the headrest.

Edit: Here's a link to a thread where I posted some A-10 pics that I took. I've got a few more that I can e-mail hi-res versions of to you...I just have to figure out where I put them.

It basically is the same seat, but with slightly bigger side handles and a different canopy breaker design. Using the same seat model might be acceptable, as seat handles and canopy breakers closely resemble the F-15 ones. With this I'm not saying walmis's seat is good, because it has a too thin profile, making it look like the Mb Mk. 16L, i.e., very shallow, and not as much rearward as a real f-15 aces II.

see?

and also pay attention to the angle the headrest makes with the seat's back side, it's not a smooth curve transition, but a 90* angle

McDonnell-Douglas ACES II - A-10 Warthog version A10ACESrt.jpg The A-10 Warthog is equipped with this version of the ACES II. It replaced an Escapac seat used in the prototypes and early aircraft. This version differs from the rest of the basic side-pull ACES II seats (F-15, F-117) in the configuration of the headrest canopy breakers, and the side-pull handles. The picture below shows the size difference between the handles on the A-10 (right) and the F-15 (left). The F-15 seats originally had no canopy breakers as in the example shown, but were later fit with a single canopy breaker. The F-117 has a metal canopy frame which precludes the use of a canopy breaker. The handles on the F-117 closely resemble the A-10 handles.

CNCs and Laser engravers are great but they can't do squat with out a precise set of plans.

Been getting a lots of hits on my website from this, and a thread in the 3D section so, I thought I would stop-by and see what was going on. I see you're doing a new 3D model of the Hawg.... so how's it going and what can I do to help?

Ugly but well hung!

Cheers StrikeMax. That's kinda what Deadman is working on, although he's completely new to Max and finding it a bit frustrating at times. Any chance we could have a look at yours please?

Dice, cheers - what are you good with? I've done a ton of work already, but help will always be appreciated. :)

Dice? He's da man when it comes to A-10 information...a long-time A-10 crew chief, IIRC. :D
