Just got the Pimax. It works plug and play with DCS.

First impression, instruments are more legible than CV1. However, compared to my fancy 4k monitor, colours look flaccid.

Will come back with more on the weekend.

What about ghosting and the readability of landscape ?

Definitively with Wormeaten here. Today's systems, Vive/rift, are to marginal for what they cost. Ideally i want to see 140° FOV and eye tracking before i spend the kind of money they want. In the mean time i might buy something cheaper, maybe some Microsoft VR headset or Pimax. There is no reason for discourse here. Todays systems are only a marginal entry into VR and the systems that come the next 1-2 years will blow them out of the water. In latest developments, i am exited to learn that Vive are adding eye-tracking to the HTC. This allows them to increase resolution and FOW, while decreasing demands on the GPU. I think next gen Rift and Vive will be great products.

Of course a waste of money is all subjective. It could be argued that without the people purchasing CV1, there would be no 2nd gen stuff following on behind.

I'll probably be re-investing in that 2nd gen stuff when it reaches the marketplace too. As for CV1 being over priced - I disagree entirely. I wouldn't swap it for flat screens if you offered twice it's cost.

How many of you saying it is a waste of money actually own one? If however you are saying it is unaffordable, that is an entirely different matter. But unless you actually have one, how can you judge value for money?

Back to the original question. Some other VR sets have partial support, but only the Rift and to a lesser degree the Vive are supported and provide all the functionality you need to practically fly with them.

This.

I would not trade my Rift CV1 for anything out currently, I absolutely love it. Love the Touch Controllers. Love the positional tracking. Love the smoothness of all the movements it follows. The 90 Hz refresh rate. Love the experiences and games Oculus offers for it ( some that come free with the Touch controllers). The support system offered by Oculus.

Without those, any other device would be a no go for me.

Even with it's current weaknesses, like SDE , resolution, and FOV, I will take it as it is over anything else currently - and especially a monitor, can not go back to gaming on the monitor again.

And I certainly feel like I am getting all my moneys worth, and I even bought about a month before the big price drop by Oculus.

And yes, when Generation 2 of the devices come out with hopefully some features that are being much talked about, like foveated rendering and eye tracking, I will be one of the first to jump on board. And unless something changes in a big way, likely the Rift CV2.

I am certainly hooked!

Readability is fine, i compare the Pimax to a monitor with high colour saturation. There is ghosting around Las Vegas, where i get 30fps. However, when i get 50-60, it's ok. My GFX card is 1080 GTX.

My experience with Pimax so far :

I downloaded Pimax software, installed it and the Steam VR client. DCS has been working flawlessly from the beginning, and it is safe to say that the Pimax software has come to maturity

Image : The display resolution is clearly better in Pimax compared to CV1. However, colours are better in CV1. When it comes to ghosting the Pimax has little of this when the framerate stays on 60hz. However, when you are in areas where many objects are rendered, you will have some ghosting. This is however not related to the display refresh rate, but the speed at witch your CPU/GPU renders objects.

Overall i rate the display as better than the CV1.

Head tracking : As you may know Pimax has only 3DOF, in addition to this, i am experiencing drifting. So in this respect the CV1 is clearly better.

Overall, i am pleased with the Pimax. It has gotten me into the VR experience at lesser cost than the alternatives.

However, my overall view remains. Current gen VR headsets offer only the minimum entry point for VR. I can not wait for the day when we have substantially better resolution and FOW.

Hi Pegon Thanks for the review! I was wondering. With the Pimax it processes the data different then the CV1. So to produce the picture if i read it right, it compresses the data from the card and then the headset decompresses the signal in to the 3d picture. Have you tried running a graphic card monitor program like MSI AfterBurner to see how much vid ram and gpu usage it uses? Just curious if the usage is the same? I have the CV1 right now but have been looking in to the Pimax for the reason I believe is the Pimax and Piplay software help take some of the load off the computer which might be a better solution for the flight sims. Thanks!

Hi Brewnix,

Have not tried any monitoring program. However i can give you some observations. When i fly high i get solid 60fps. Down in the valleys 60fps. However, if the valley has trees or if i fly low over Vegas, i get solid 30fps. It seems to me that the bottleneck is how the CPU/GPU, renders objects, not the Pimax itself. If you get the same with CV1 you may not get any benefit from the Pimax.

Also i wonder; Does anyone know if i need to run the Steam VR software in DCS ? It currently loads automatically and i wonder if i get better framerates without it. (Having the Pimax up and running without snags, makes me apprehensive about changing anything)

Pretty sure Pimax requires Steam VR...

other VR devices for DCS...

Hi Pegon...i am considering entering in the vr world and have still to decide if take the rift or some alternative...just a couple of questions for you regarding the pimax, that i am considering as alternative:

1) could you share your system specs and settings?

2)on the pimax forum i read that the goggles can be overdriven at 90hz...did you try that?

3)it is true that wathever resolution you set in dcs the image will be scaled to the pimax resolution?

4) is there some form of atw (or the steam vr equivalent)?

5) about head tracking and the drift...it is a big issue for you?how often it occurs?is there a way to set a key to center again the view (like track-ir)?

6) did you try to experiment different head tracking solution to get 6dof?

Thanks and sorry for all my questions

Never tried any overdrive. Image is butter smooth at 60fps, so no need.

The image was scaled down from 4k on first try, so i think so.

What is atw ?

Tracking is the usual gyroscope type. Use numpad 5.

Will get the NoloVR i think.

Ok thanks sounds like its already better performance. A solid 60fps and 30fps and a clearer picture sounds great. I guess next question when u get chance. How about viewing distant in game how far did you set that. Can you see farther then cv1?

I use the standard settings you get when you use the VR settings, not sure what that is. Performance has been good, so have spent little time with settings. Have pixel density at 1.3 however.

The focal point of the Pimax is infinity, so overall with the better resolution, i think it is better at distance. However, it is more than 6 months since i tried the CV1, so not claiming this as gospel truth.

I mean the rift and vive technology which provide frames when your pc cannot get to 90fps...probably you can use it with steam vr as well...but i am no expert so i don't know

But if they don't improve the tracking, you're in for a sick ride. Literally sick. I'm all for better picture/FOV etc, but it's just as important that tracking is 100% solid. VR's tracking needs are very different than what's required for TiR's of the world. So do keep that in mind

Sorry to say i don't know this either. I use a Mac for all other things than games, so my software knowledge is little.

But on the bright side of this. With no trouble and little adjustment i set up the Pimax and got it working with good performance and only basic understanding of technicals.

From other forums i have learned that Pimax software has come a long way since release and this has been my experience with DCS. Haven't tried other games.

Actually Pimax start from the scratch with their own drivers and software somewhere after Chinese New Year. Previous versions was based on DK2 open source drivers. So we can expect more advancing in that way.
