I've been involved in DCS since... erm I don't know actually, but when the Black Shark saw first light I grabbed it. Was later in the A10 beta.

I accumulated the KA-50(1) and (2) + A10C + Flaming Cliffs (re-injected) + UH-1H + Combined Arms + DCS world and more. Fantastic titles.

Now, with an updated clean PC-rig + VR (and Steam convenience) I started with the DCS world via Steam. The Frogfoot and P51 are amazing in VR.

My question: Are the above titles outdated in terms of VR (The A10, KA50(2), Huey, etc)? Do I need to repurchase them for full price in order to enjoy the new VR technology?

I see the DCS World 2.1 is on the way and I really want to get back up into the air with my VR rig but I am a bit unsure of the path; Steam or ED?

Are my old modules to any use in terms of the new interface?

Any help appreciated on what I need to re-buy, and how. I do like the good old KA50, A10C, Huey, Frogfoot etc. But, planning to extend over Normandy with the 109 ofcourse!

(and the reason for being long-time grounded; CMANO :))

Cheers,

Ingolf

You don't need to re buy anything all DCS Modules are good, Just need FC3 if you haven't got it.

IF you got them from steam then stick with steam But stand alone from ED is probably better.

NOTE: Keys from steam are no longer compatible with ED stand alone after the M2KC

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Thanks joey45 for swift reply!

I still don't think I get where the development stands today. I need to do some more reading in order to grasp the options.

In order to get VR-compatible (Rift Cv1) aircrafts, do I need to get them via Steam? Or is it possible to update/"transfer-to-steam" my old modules bought from ED? Can this be done via FC3?

Sorry for my knowledge slip here, but the Steam DCS world Frogfoot (VR) got me tinkering with the ED A10C and I could not connect them both. Last time I played DCS I simply authorized the products via a key-GUI ingame.

Thanks for reading, I really need to catch up on the Viggen too. :D

Steam is still 1.5

Stand alone with ED is both 1.5 Open Beta and Stable and 2.1 is Open Alpha

You can use either as VR should work with both.

As you got your modules from ED then best stick with ED

Depends what version you have, I do not have VR but others here that do can guide you..

Hello and welcome back. Myself personally, use standalone, much less problems, you cant access, Normandy, or early access products on Steam either.

We are Virtual Pilots, a growing International Squad of pilots, we fly Allies in WWII and Red Force in Korea and Modern combat. We are recruiting like minded people of all Nationalities and skill levels.

Thanks joey45. And Andy1966 for the welcome back :)

I think I'll uninstall my Steam DCS world and start over with everything from ED. My hopes are that I can still squeeze enjoyment out of my previously invested modules. The reason I started off with the Steam version was to quickly test the VR-support. But that is perhaps a non-issue then? Even downloading from ED wont cause conflicts when using Oculus Rift CV1?

I know, I can read up a bit better, just being lazy (or rather eager to get up there) ;)

The first take-off in the Frogfoot with my CV1 was a true sim changer! Absolutely fabulous! Can't wait until the Normandy setting gets more developed. I have a dozen IL2-companions that I need to bring to DCS Normandy (and Oculus Rift)!

I'll let you know how my comeback goes.

Many thanks,

/Ingolf

Ok, so here's 2 questions that came up before I re-install the DCS platform:

1. What aircraft are flyable in VR (Oculus RIft, CV1)?

2. If I want to fly those aircrafts in VR, is Steam the only way to go, or do the ED installation support VR (Oculus Rift)?

I can look ahead with steam and Oculus support, but wonder if the old A10C and Huey has been released in VR-mode via ED?

The Steam Frogfoot and P51 Mustang was/is a gamechanger in VR! Thanks DCS devs for going down this road, indeed! :D

They all work in VR AFAIK, wait till you get back into the Huey. ;)

And the A10 cockpit is awesome.

I pretty much only use 2.1.x alpha (currently)

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

Currently rolling with a Asus Z390 Prime, 9600K, 32GB RAM, SSD, 2080Ti and Windows 10Pro, Rift CV1. bu0836x and Scratch Built Pedals, Collective and Cyclic.

So with the 2.1 alpha, that means the ED tube works fine with Oculus Rift?

No need for Steam then?

But, I guess I'll have to re-buy the A10-C and Huey from ED in order to make tham work in VR? I mean, it's a totally new coding there, right?

Thanks again for being patient with a VR-noob ;)

1. generally you can fly all aircraft in VR, but some work better than others (mostly concerning readability of gauges and markings and such)

2. Steam is not needed

No re-releases of the A-10C or Huey are available or necessary, but of course they are constantly updated to work with the current DCS World engine.

But, I guess I'll have to re-buy the A10-C and Huey from ED in order to make tham work in VR? I mean, it's a totally new coding there, right?

You don't need to rebuy anything, see above.

So all aircrafts are flyable in VR on the 1.5 ED DCS world platform?

Or even just as stand alone A10-C/Huey?

I can not really believe that, so I have to rephrase my question:

What is the minimum platform that would accept my old A10-C and Huey (+Black Shark?).

Now, going into testing the A10 and connecting it to ED DCS world.

Many thanks for tips and hints!

You're thinking too much into it ;)

There are no special VR-versions. There is only DCS World in its 3 different development branches:

- Stable Release: The normal DCS branch that is considered free of major bugs and other issues. It's current version is 1.5.

-> ED Standalone Download: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/stable/

-> Steam Download: http://store.steampowered.com/app/223750/DCS_World/

- Open Beta: The purpose of this branch is to publicly test new updates for bugs before they get released to the Stable Release. Because there is no update in testing at the moment, it's version is the same as for the Stable Release branch (1.5). It is therefor compatible with the Stabble Release Branch in multiplayer at the moment.

-> ED Standalone Download: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/beta/

- Open Alpha: It started as a testbed for the new Nevada map and since last week for the Normandy map as well. It's current Version is 2.1.

-> ED Standalone Download: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/alpha/

As you can see only the stable release branch is available on Steam, because this is the official stable branch for the public. The Steam version is the same as EDs standalone. There are no differences, besides the fact, that not all modules (aircrafts, maps, campaigns) are available on Steam yet, because some of them are also still in beta or early access and will be released to steam when ready. Be careful though, because products bought through ED can not be activated in Steam and from now on (starting with the Mirage 2000) all products bought in Steam can not be used in the ED standalone version. That has no technichal reason as they are all the same, it's just because of license issues.

Sometime later this year there will be the so called "great merge" (2.5) when the Caucasus map will be re-released in its upgraded version which makes it compatible with DCS 2.x From this point on there probably won't be as many different branches as we have now, but that still remains to happen.

All current versions (everthing that is 1.5 and higher including the steam version) are VR compatible. If you have bought the Warthog ~10 years ago then there is nothing you need to do to play it in VR except installing one of the 3 DCS branches, log in ingame with your account and download the Warthog through the module manager. The Black Shark is the only module that recieved an upgrade pack (Black Shark 2), because the original Black Shark was released even before the original DCS. All other modules (including Black Shark 2) recieve continious updates that are included in the regular DCS World updates. Some aircraft might look better in VR than others though, but that has nothing to do with versions, just with how they are designed.

Hope that helps a bit :)

Wow, this is amazing news, QuiGon!

Sorry for being such a sceptical hard*ss!

Will start installing all from ED DCS and forget about Steam for a while.

For some odd reason I thought the Oculus Rift support had to go through Steam. Can't wait to jump into the VR A10-C or the Huey! The Messerschmidt 109 is also on my wishlist together with the Normany map ofcourse!

Thanks QuiGon!

I now have the A10 + KA50(2) + Combined Arms installed via ED (dropped the Steam version). It all works out very nicely! And the VR is amazing!

Have to try to find my old keyboard layout/controls. I will fly with the Saitek X52 pro + G25 pedals. I know there was a bit of tweaking for the G25 pedals but I think I saved the instructions somewhere safe. What I did not do was to save my Huey in a safe place, it burned together with my external harddrive so I have no documentation of my purchase left, I'm afraid.

Will look around a bit more in my license folders and with some luck I'll find it. Do ED save customer statistics so I might be able to retrieve it there?

Anyway, this is such good news. Will sit around and stare at the A10-C gauges for a while, guess its a VR-noob syndrome... :)

Only problem I have is to position myself correctly in the cockpit. Always sit to close up front, need to back down into my seat. Is there a shortcut key to RESET VR position? Keys to move position back/down etc? I know I'll have to go through the controls/key setup and see what I can find.

[EDIT]: I found NUM-5 does the job to a certain extent, but it will have to be initialized correctly as you start up the game. I've entered 1.83 as my "height" for Oculus Rift, and that may cause the problem? Or does DCS take this into account and place a 1.83 cm body in the seat?

Also, I found my Huey license at the website (stored with my profile)! All good then and thanks everyone for a warm welcome back! Time to explore Nevada a bit before busting the shores of Normandy! :D
