AIM-9X is not supposed to be "easy" to dodge especially in a Su-22. It's very likely the Syrian pilot to have had no clue about the Super Hornet being around not to mention shooting. AIM-120 is not very likely to have been used in this case given that it really matters to be sure at who you are shooting at hence the need to come WVR and identify. My guess is 9X, single shot.

Do you think that Syria didn't have a air defense network up and running and being blind so no one had any knowledge of that Hornet than a US and they had info about that Su-22 as well and everyone else?

CNN for military aviation news...Interesting.

As for Syria's AD network - 6 years of hell does something to you at every level. That's not even getting into training differences and such.

I think they are relying on mostly Russian equipment right now, and most of that is on the western side of Syria, I think the middle of Syria is pretty much too much of a mess for anyone.

I think it's reasonable to expect that the Syrians and their Russian partners/co-combatants/etc were aware of the Super Hornet being there but either neglected to inform the Fitter pilot or banked on the Super Hornet not taking any action.

Seeing as the F/A-18s were close enough to observe everything and even Wake Rocked the Su Pilot... I'd say they knew he was there...

D'oh!

Yes..I forgot that news came out.

There is just too little information as to why the pilot decided to use a MRM instead of another 9X to shoot down the Su-22 - initial load-out, did the only remaining SRM misfire, and probably a plethora of additional reasons.

They fly double ugly a lot in that part of the world which typically only includes a single AIM-9 and a single AIM-120. That's a possible reason.

Maybe I miss it, but has there even been any official information released from the US DOD or USN stating even the weapons the aircraft was carrying? I ask because the F/A-18 tend to carry very mix load out, some video even show them carrying what looks like AIM-7, some carry limited missiles (one of each SRM and MRM).

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..

No, the AIM-9X followed by AIM-120 storyline is just that...a story. It hasn't been confirmed by any official source that I've seen.

Regarding the AIM-7, they don't carry them into combat AFAIK. I believe each squadron gets an allotment of them for a yearly SHOOTEX.

None official(usually not very informative concerning specs), so I cannot say whether its correct or not, but IMO it does sound quite plausible.

Radar guided missiles are LOAL and usually require a little fly-out time to "set up" and locate the target.

AIM-120 can be fired LOBL too.

Same story being circlesourced by all the news normies!

Yay!

AFAIK, they've mainly been flying with 9Xs over there...Like every picture with AAMs shows 'em as I remember.

Yes, & the passenger flight that was intercepted by an F-16 over the Baltic knew the F-16 was there, but didn't expect to be launched on, and the F-16 knew that the Su-27 that showed him his weapons was there, but didn't expect to be launched on.

The Su-22 undoubtedly knew the Hornet was there, but probably believed that the pilot would respect international law and not shoot down a Syrian air-force aircraft operating in Syrian airspace.

Cheers.

Wait Wait what is this? When did this ever happened? An F16 shot at an airliner and a Su-27 shot at the F16???? When was this?

Maybe that would be true had it not allegedly dropped munitions near coalition/coalition backed forces.

At this point, unless you read an official DOD or USN report that specifies what occurred, everyone should just assume that the news has it wrong. They can't get articles about civilian/commercial aviation right, why would anyone trust them to report on tactical aviation correctly?

Is defense.gov considered fake news?

https://www.defense.gov/News/Article/Article/1220818/dod-official-sole-focus-in-iraq-syria-remains-on-isis/

The rest of the media was given information from Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis. Not sure what CNN has to gain from lying about what type of missile was used. The general population probably doesn't even care.

You could always contact DoD public affairs to see if there's any other media that's getting it wrong. :) 703-571-3343

The Flanker thing is so funny. He pulls up in fingertip for a bit, turns out and joins up on the HVAA and suddenly that's a hostile act!?!

Okay...:P

And, uhhh...Blaming aircrew for following their ROE...?

No, an F-16 ID'd and maybe escorted a Russian VVIP bird in international airspace. A Flanker escort pulled up on the Viper's wing on video and then checked away/formed up on the HVAA. The media said "OOOOH HE FLASHED HIS MISSILES OMFG!!!1!1!!11!" like they always do.

Defense.gov doesn't support the CNN story or any of the other sensationalist silliness. At least where specific details that have been in question in this thread are concerned. :smilewink:

No, but nothing in any article that I've seen there specifies circumstances, weapons used, ranges, etc.

I don't know what they have to gain either, but they've gotten plenty of other things wrong, to include direct quotes. And I don't just mean CNN, they've all done it at one point or another.

 But you're the one who refuses to believe Ryan Browne's report. If you're not on board, why not get to the bottom of it? It sounds like the Pentagon only planned on briefing the press.

Without contacting the authors of the reports and/or Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, I don't know how you guys plan on learning if it was an AIM-9, or an AIM-120. Or what the pilot had for breakfast that morning.
