ram0506 Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 The VR-performance of the actual version 2.1 of DCS is so poor that the Spitfire campaign is barely playable. I reduced my settings to medium, turned off MSAA, turned off shadows completely, reduced PD to 1.6 just to get 45fps in the game. But even with the reduced settings there are regular drops below 45 fps in the game. Lots of stuttering and sometimes game freezes for a second, e.g. when AI starts to shoot at ground targets. After completing the first mission game crashed after pressing button for finishing the mission. A very common problem not of the campaign itself but of DCS in general when using VR. Waiting for improvements of VR-performance. David OC Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 I think this comes down to the overall optimization of the engine, not just for VR. I took the plunge and ordered the Rift now the price is down, It don't expect to be able to play any fairly large mission in DCS with it and know this going in, perhaps further down the track in 2.5 and when much more optimization is done, it will get better for the larger missions. . i7-7700K OC @ 5Ghz | ASUS IX Hero MB | ASUS GTX 1080 Ti STRIX | 32GB Corsair 3000Mhz | Corsair H100i V2 Radiator | Samsung 960 EVO M.2 NVMe 500G SSD | Samsung 850 EVO 500G SSD | Corsair HX850i Platinum 850W | Oculus Rift | ASUS PG278Q 27-inch, 2560 x 1440, G-SYNC, 144Hz, 1ms | VKB Gunfighter Pro Chuck's DCS Tutorial Library Download PDF Tutorial guides to help get up to speed with aircraft quickly and also great for taking a good look at the aircraft available for DCS before purchasing. ram0506 Posted August 2, 2017 Author Posted August 2, 2017 I think this comes down to the overall optimization of the engine, not just for VR. I haven`t tried the campaign in 2D, but overall performance when playing version 2.1 on the monitor is ok for me. Can switch to very high settings and even turn on some of the MSAA without having too much trouble in combination with deferred shading. But VR is a totally different thing. Especially Normandy is very poor optimized (lots of trees and objects). Then adding the mass of Ai of the Spitfire campaign and the Spitfire module itself, which obviously has a low VR-performance factor, seems to be the final straw for my VR experience. Really sad thing as I can`t go back to 2D-flying and the campaign seems to be very well scripted.:( I7 6700K, Asus Z170 Pro Gaming, EVGA GTX1080Ti SC, 32GB DDR4 @ 3000, Win10 64, BenQ EW3270ZL 2560x1440, VPC WarBRD Base + TM Warthog Grip, TM Warthog Throttle, MFG Crosswind Rudder Pedals, Oculus Rift S

Quadg Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 the 2.1 release just in time for the rift summer sale was terrible timing... breaking your game in VR just when all the fence sitters plunge off the fence into VR.. at least 1.5 works for the moment. and redoing all the old campaigns in VR is a blast. helicopters and mountains just go together. Not sure that it's that broke, with careful adjustment 2.1.1 works better than 2.0.x for me in VR. Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment. Sandman1330 Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 Not sure that it's that broke, with careful adjustment 2.1.1 works better than 2.0.x for me in VR. I think it is broke when high end systems running 1080Ti cards can't maintain playable frame rates at medium settings. We are talking systems that run over 20K in Firestrike benchmark and can run AAA titles at ultra settings. 2.1 is pretty graphics wise but doesn't hold a card to these AAA games, which both look far nicer and run much smoother. I too am looking forward to further optimization. So much unrealized potential in this sim... awjudge Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 Here we go. Yes, it's 'broke'. It's still in Alpha. It's not optimised. They're working on it. Wait until the full release to see how the performance is then. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Phantom88 Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 I find NTTR works well in VR on medium settings,Normandy.........not so much.I'm hoping The 2.5 merge will help the developers concentrate on optimizing one game engine with more frequent updates. Patrick
dburne Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 Well the topic is in regards to performance with the Normandy Map - specifically the new Spitfire Campaign. There is no question currently the Normandy Map in DCS suffers in the performance department, especially in VR. The new map which is beautifull along with the new graphics techniques has definitely taken a bit of a toll. Hopefully performance optimizations will be forthcoming. I have the campaign but have not given it a go yet, I have managed to at least get Normandy to pretty much maintain 45 fps at least during some of the instant action missions, but only after getting a 1080 Ti card. I can imagine though in a battle with a lot of action going on around, frames would likely drop below 45 fps for me as well easily enough. John Hargreaves Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 Mmm, slightly disappointing to hear this. I went to see the Dunkirk movie this afternoon and I fancied having a go at being Tom Hardy, so I was going to pick this up at the weekend. I might hang on a bit then instead. @Don, what card did you have before the Ti? Do let us know how it performs in the Epsom Campaign when you get chance. The YouTube videos of this campaign do look good though. PCALEX Posted August 4, 2017 Posted August 4, 2017 Gentleman, I try to run the Spitfire Epsom Campaign in VR and it allows me to load and enter the Mission but as soon as I try to execute a command I get "program has stopped working and Windows will try to determine the problem and get back to me" Of course they never do. I am running a GTX 980 Windows 10 64 bit on an ASUS G20CB Intel I&-6700 16 GB Ram. It works fine in 2D. Help
dburne Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 I tried the first mission of the Epsom Campaign this afternoon, it was unplayable for me. Framerates in the teens while taking off and starting to fly around. The stutter was severe. I will wait and hold off for hopefully better performance down the pike. dburne Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 (edited) I disabled Deferred Shading, Now I am into the 20's instead of the teens, some improvement but not enough for me. Way too stuttery. I will just hope for some performance improvements down the road before flying this campaign. Edit: Disabled all shadows and turned off MSAA ( had it at 2x). Now getting upper 30's , at least closer to the magic 45 fps number. It may be playable at this point ( probably could set PD off instead of 1.3 as well), but really looking kind of rough around the edges now. ram0506 Posted August 5, 2017 Author Posted August 5, 2017 Yes, Deferred Shading off doesn`t bring much improvement (and the optics suffer). Also waiting for better performance.
