I got my Oculus 3 weeks ago and it has been awesome seeing the cockpit in 3D and flying in 3D with the ground, buildings and forests looking so real, but I can't play the game this way.

While I enjoyed the VR, and it added greatly to the visual experience, it also detracted from the reality of trying to fly a simulator too much. I cannot see my hands to efficiently use my Hotas, or look far enough around in the cockpit from my sim racing seat to see all the switches. Or see my cheat sheets on my second monitor. I spent far too much time trying to look for solutions to these problems that I wasn't flying much or getting into the simulation. So, VR will just be a back burner toy for me in DCS for now I guess.

But in other games, that are not so in-depth, like IL2 BoS/BoM, Elite Dangerous, etc... it seems to be workable. At least for me. But I'm still testing those out, so time will tell. But IL2 Looks awesome and does not have a clickable cockpit or require too many controls to play effectively. Just my 2 cents..

Try using the KneeBoard for your cheat sheets.

I'm healing a head wound so I can't use OR for a week or so. Using my triple screen setup again is nice for the clarity of the cockpit, no doubt about it. But for me the difference between using triple screen vs. OR is like the difference between watching a scene on TV vs. actually being in the scene.

I feel the same. I am still have dreams of building a 1.1 cockpit. Unless they come out with a headset that would allow you to see your home made cockpit thru the headset.

I know a lot of guys say they won't go back to 2D, and I understand that. We each have our own likes/dislikes. For me, good graphics are pretty important to me. I can sacrifice some graphics quality for the VR. But I don't like to fumble around with my hands on my controller. I should look more into using that ingame kneeboard though.. I have not used it a lot. I have seen it displayed on the pilot's lap, and also flat on the screen. I don't know how to do that latter, but that's probably what I need.

I was looking at all kinds of solutions the past few weeks. It looks like solutions are coming, but for now VR only seems good in simple games. Which is why almost all of the games developed for VR are arcade type games.

At first I was looking at the Leap Motion so I could use my hands in the game. That's not really there yet.. But the Eye Tracking that not only let's you look at things(controls, switches, etc..), but also reduces the demand on graphics cards looks very promising. When you look at things in the real world, they are what is in focus, not the surrounding area. And this Eye Tracking is using that to increase the quality on what you look at, and reduce it at what is not the point of view. That seems like a very good idea.

VR in it's current iteration is certainly not for everyone, different strokes ya know.

For me, I shudder to think how many hours I spend now in combat flight simming as compared to prior to getting my Rift on Jan 15th. The Rift has increased my gaming time ten fold I think, just can't seem to get enough. And that is not counting some of the other Touch supported games I enjoy on occasion.

I think when the next generation comes out that is really going to help VR get more into the main stream.

Snacko. Everything depend on ED who didn't fully adopt VR to DCS. Your solution will be mouse cursore who interact with cockpit in real 3D. Today is 2D cursor in 3D cockpit. With 50$ Leapmotion and real 3D mouse you will be able to use your hands in natural way inside the game and interact with every single button inside cockpit just way it is in real world.

This is major problem for long time and ED didn't do nothing about it for more than 10 years when this 2D/3D conflict appire in 6DoF cockpit.

ED this is major issue and you should start to do something about it finally.

Shoot I have no problem at all using my HOTAS in VR.

I already had been used to using my HOTAS for all the buttons I have programmed and transitioning to VR was fairly easy for me. I was not looking at my HOTAS to see which buttons I was pressing, I know them all by feel.

I currently have a Virpil gimbal/stick setup, Warthog throttle, and a CH Throttle Quadrant. I have plenty of buttons/axis available to me. Plus I recently got Voice Attack as well for radio commands, just really getting started with it.

Heck, I even went through the full manual start of the KA-50 with the Rift on, using the mouse assigned in the VR. It was a little tedious the first time but a lot of fun.

I have no problem at all strapping the Rift on my head and flying with my HOTAS setup without looking at anything outside of the Rift.

I am sure as VR continues to grow over the next few years and become more mainstream, we will see game developers such as ED putting more attention into it.

One thing I wish ED would do is to get DCS listed on the Oculus Store. Elite Dangerous did this and they have a huge following of Rift users over on the Oculus forum.

It is not the problem with HOT ASS. Problem is you got 6DoF cockpit which interact only with your head movement but not with hands as well. So interaction wit instruments is still 2D and that will give real kick in realistic interaction. This way it is just half job done.

ED could get easy without it in past but today it is must have. This could reflecting bad on future of DCS. This days 3d 6DoF interaction within cockpit should be priority number one.

Not a problem for me, I have no trouble with it as it is for now. I do look forward to the future and what it might bring for VR, but sure am enjoying it now as well.

its all about preference.

i will say give oculus/vive a chance.

i was playing with FC3 craft, and was fine.

i just got a kensington trackball to see if it will allow me to work around the virtual clickable cockpit.

but i got you, i felt the same way about trackIR, i hated the thing.. no matter how many times i tried to get used to it, and the number of ppl telling me to use it, i just hated TrackIR.
