Hey guys, Im wondering what method you guys use to find additional targets from an existing target? For example, JTAC in the remarks states "ZSU-23 3nm SE"

Assuming the target is heavily defended and you are orbiting 5-10nm away:

Do you use the TAD and create a Markpoint 3nm SE of current target and begin a search from there with the TGP?

Do you use just the TGP and somehow slew 3nm to the SE?

Do you estimate visually 3nm SE and begin a search with the TGP

or do you use some other method.

If I'm orbiting 5-10nm away at low altitude then I just look outside the cockpit.

If I'm far away and enroute, then I slew the TGP to the JTAC's coordinates for the primary target and then slew the TGP around -- it's faster to just start slewing SE (in your example) than trying to make another markpoint on the TAD.

If I'm at medium altitude and the AAA isn't the primary target, and I have time (no friendlies under fire) then I ignore it and engage the primary target with PGMs. No need to put myself at needless risk.

That's the misunderstanding right there. These are not additional targets. These are threats and hazards that the JTAC tells you about so you can avoid getting shot by them. It's meant to build up your SA.

Of course you're free to engage these first if you must, and IRL the JTAC could give you their coords or talk your eyes onto them. In DCS, spotting stuff on the ground is already pretty tough, and 3 NM in a cardinal direction - I just wouldn't bother. The search grid is so ridiculously large that it could eat half your fuel just to find that one Shilka, and it really isn't mission critical. If it was, the JTAC (aka the mission designer) would have assigned it as a primary target.

1. JTAC sends info creating a Red Triangle on the TAD which is the Target.

2. Slew TAD cursor over the Target and TMS UP SHORT to Hook.

3. Then TMS UP LONG to make SPI.

4. CHINA HAT UP LONG to slew all (TGP/MAV/HUD cursor) to SPI.

At this point there are 2 options

5A. Select weapon and deploy with appropriate procedure.

But for when more accuracy is needed (if your troops are nearby)

5B. Select TGP and zoom in to more accurately ID target and make it SPI. Then select weapon

and deploy with appropriate procedure.

Build a threat picture in your mind. "SA-9 3 miles east, Zeus 1 mile north" Ok then I will come in from the SSW so I can watch for SAM launches at 2 o'clock and I'll come off the target left for W/SW.

Oh OK..so in most cases you would never bother going on a search for these additional targets because it would be too hard to find them and not part of the mission.

I've been using F7 key for ground units a lot lately then entering the Lat/Long co-ords into my CDU and once I slew and create SPI I then scope around with my TGP till I find my target, hey it's pretty successful too once you get the hang of it. I also use landmarks like bridges or railways lines etc when in F7 view to help locate. Quite a few times I've been sent on wild goose chases from JTAC UTM and L/L co-ords that are miles away and have no target. I'm also going to give that Red Triangle Hook method a go lasvideo posted, sounds good, thanks.

easy.. with TGP. you have yardstick, slew to general direction of remarks until you spot them in bhot whot.

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

Great answer, even if it dates back a few years!
