clarasdk Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 Hi I recently decided to jump into VR (oculus rift) mainly for flight sims and Elite Dangerous. I have a Geforce 1070, 16 gigs of memory, SSD disc and an old I7-2600k. I can run IL-2, Elite Dangerous, Project Cars and everything else in VR just fine but I have problems with DCS. Even when I put all settings on low flying over Vegas dessert with not much going on I get wierd FPS dips that leads to jutter/jumps. When I do not get these wierd spikes I run between 45 and 90 fps no problems. So the question is the I7-2600k not good enough? Or what else could be the problem? I have tried running the game in admin mode, I have tried deactivating hyper threading. But nothing helps :( Any inputs on this topic would be great as I would love to fly around in DCS in VR, it is such a game changer in IL-2 and Elite.
dburne Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 Couple things that come to my mind. Do you have deferred shading on? If so try it off. What Pixel Density setting are you running? Might drop down to 1.0 if not already. MSAA - try off first, then see if it can handle 2x. Shadows off at first. Are you overclocking that 2600k? Keep in mind to, the great merge to 2.5 should be happening by the end of the month. Basically everything is on low or off and still I get these wierd spikes. The 2600k is not overclocked as my cooler has a hard time keeping the tems low when I overclock... Will the 2.5 update improve/change VR performance?

Your CPU may be holding you back a little. You do have deferred shading off as well? Yep deferred shading is also off. The wierd thing is that I am running around 90 fps most of the time and then suddenly there seem to come a dip.....Even when just looking up at blue sky that should be not problem to render....

DCS is pretty demanding, can't say that I get those large dips though mine is fairly consistent at least is stays 45-90 fps. Make sure you have " prefer maximum performance" selected in Nvidia control panel. I think by default it set is to " optimum performance". I also run with ASW set to off. Cibit Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 Background programs, I had severe dips with Ccleaner running in tray also causing problems was Asus AIsuite and an updater. Run taskmanager so you can see it peering from under the rift and see what is running concurrently :) Also try to reduce the preload radius that can help i5 8600k@5.2Ghz, Asus Prime A Z370, 32Gb DDR4 3000, GTX1080 SC, Oculus Rift CV1, Modded TM Warthog Modded X52 Collective, Jetseat, W10 Pro 64 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Adding JTAC Guide //My Vid's//229th AHB
hansangb Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Also, what version of DCS are you running? vparez Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 I have a i7 7700k, 16gb ram and 1080ti and have a very steady performance of 23 fps. So, count yourself lucky with your 90 fps and dips...
Einherjer Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Everything over 45 FPS is good- don’t look at the frame counter ... just fly I have a 2500k on 4.5ghz and a 1070 Rock solid 45 over Nevada and Normandy with setting to medium/high

You're running stuff at high with MSAA at 8x though right? Something is amiss with your game settings. A 1070 should be able to run DCS at 45fps easily enough. Most other games runs at 90fps with 2x supersample and the works. DCS is a bit of a killer.

I also ran i5 2500k and again, no issues that others with better hardware weren't having. But I ran it at 4.3GHz. Same with my current i5 4690k - runs at 4.3GHz. You need a bare minimum of 4GHz imo. Using the 2600k at standard speed will be an issue. I tried settings from Jabbers. No improvement whatsoever. The FPS in game is ranging from 15 on max settings to 32 with lowest (pixel density 1.0). Totally unplayable.

Are you running it off an HDD, are your drivers up to date? Are you plugged into onboard graphics card by accident. Man I would be troubleshooting the arse out of that :) i5 8600k@5.2Ghz, Asus Prime A Z370, 32Gb DDR4 3000, GTX1080 SC, Oculus Rift CV1, Modded TM Warthog Modded X52 Collective, Jetseat, W10 Pro 64 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Adding JTAC Guide //My Vid's//229th AHB

There bad things happens. On an empty mission over Las Vegas you should be getting plenty of frames with your setup. On lowest settings it certainly shouldn't be dropping below 45 ever.

I don't mean to hijack the OP from their issues, but you have some very serious issues with your setup, or setup of DCS. I have a 6700k and a 1080Ti and I get a constant 45+. lemoen Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 It is on a SSD and the preload radius is also set to minimum. So it preloads a minimum and has to keep loading more, as you fly around. Try maxing out the preload radius.
