no there is no data link in the harrier , how ever you still can get information on your wing man on the HUD using TACAN but it is not as practical as the data link in the A10C

Is that currently possible?

I would guess that you would only get range information, as in the mirage 2000.

A/A TACAN using only the onboard interrogator can only give the distance. For bearing information, you need a full TACAN beacon/transponder, which is too bulky for integration in a fighter (and not really needed).

I found a team mate I'd lost in the dark by providing the relative bearings to the same TACAN (to see if he was left or right of my path to the TACAN), then altitude of course. Finally the range from that TACAN. You could do it with the waypoint pre programmed if you share flight plans also. Once he intercepted my course and we had the same, the range and our speeds could be adjusted.

I didn't need to see him to know he was close, but I did find the FLIR was useful for picking him out from several miles and that was in VR but with lights on.

TACAN yardstick works out of the box also for direct distances, we set that up on our wingmen in each element, since primary navigation was TACAN at that time.

This kind of thing is practice and communication mostly. DL is a shame as it's massively convenient but I do like a little bit of old school trig and maths to do when navigating, keeps it entertaining.

What system is it that the F5 uses? I know you can use the tone function to give others a bearing to your position right.

The lead needs to be set theirs between 1-62 and the wingman/men set theirs 63 higher. i.e. 5 and 68. It will only show the lead the distance to the closest wingman, though.

Sorry to necro this thread.. but does this actually work on the AV-8B in the latest 2.5 patch? My buddy and I were attempting it in MP last night and couldn't seem to get it to work. Set channel 29Y, AATR and 92Y AATR like we had done in the A-10 but wasn't getting the distance indication on the EHSD.

It worked before ; the trick is to set one TACAN to something low (e.g. 1) and the other to this number plus 63 (e.g. 64). Then choose T/R, Air mode and you'll have the distance and a spining TACAN compass (no bearing available).
