1.5.8 and 2.2.0 to 2.5 transition Discussion

Okay, I understand! Thanks for everything! But, as QuiGon said, the Steam version does auto-update. Should I just uninstall my Steam version before it updates? If so, when is that? I play it a lot.

The Steam version will update at some point after standalone, so I suggest you wait until the 2.5 (stable) installer is available, delete your Steam version at that point and start downloading the installer immediately. That’s how I would do it.

I have to stop following this thread, my brain hurts.

1) If you have 1.5 open beta installed, the 2.5 open beta will download ALL files and will give you the option of uninstalling 1.5 open beta.

2) if you have 1.5 open beta and 2.2 open alpha, the 2.5 will take the files it needs from 2.2 open alpha and download the rest (faster download), and give you the option to uninstall 1.5 open beta. I believe it will automatically uninstall 2.2 open alpha.

3) if you have 1.5 stable or just 2.2 open alpha, then you have to wait for the 2.6 release installer to become available one to two weeks AFTER 2.5 open beta is available (02/07/2018 to 02/14/2018).

4) No one can tell you what the size of your particular download will be. If you have both 1.5 open beta and 2.2 open alpha installed, add the sizes of the two installs, and the sum should be the worst case size of 2.5 open beta install on your hard drive (for reference, the combined size of my 1.5 ob and 2.2 oa, with mods and saved stuff, are 131.2 Gb). I have made sure that I have much more room than that left on my SSD. ONLY YOU CAN DETERMINE HOW LARGE A WORST CASE FILE SIZE YOU MIGHT HAVE.

This really isn't rocket science folks. Figure it out. Do the math!

Here is an easy one. My new computer has nothing on it. No operating system. ( Should I use

Windows 10 or Windows 7?) I have never enabled/put the license number on any module. So I am hoping when the final release ( 2 weeks????) becomes available I will proceed to download everything onto my system. I will then activate all modules for the first time. The only playing I do now is with the free trial with the P-51 and the Su-25 and old versions of FC.

I have copied almost all of my modules but I did that last June so I am sure they are all out of date. Question...will 2.5 update all my modules?

Shadow...sleep with one eye open...always..lol.

I have noticed that when I play the trial version on my other machine ( 2600 8gb 2-old 6800 Radion 1gb in SLI that after a few minutes BANG...the machine starts using both cards.

Go figure?

When I start loading everything from the git-go am I going to have to load some of the older versions, thinking that the software will be looking for old versions to update???

Thanks for any help. Sorry to add any more confusion.

Just to be absolutely sure, I ask:

Can I install 2.5 on a third SSD if I have 1.5 on one SSD, 2.2 on a second SSD? All I want is 2.5.

From what I have read, it all should be updated and deleted. But I wanted to make sure I can do it with 2.5 on the third SSD. (It should find both versions and then ask me where to put the 2.5?)

Wait, what? We have to wait another 2 weeks for stable release? I've been getting hyped since I heard the 2.5 release date, and now I hear 2.5 is still a beta. FFS stop using the words "release" and "out" when it's still in testing phase. That's not what out means.

@ Lazduc

I have a gaming rig plus a house server. I saw Microsoft's free upgrade from W7 to W10 and decided that I'd read enough to take a chance and get W10.

One hell of a mistake.

Yes, I had the latest and greatest W10. What it was doing was trashing my files by encrypting them which often made me "take ownership" or just decrypt. If W10 touched it again, boom, encrypted it again. I tried several different ways to turn off the decryption to no avail. (Okay, maybe I just didn't know how?) I wanted to turn off Windows Defender. Fine, W10 said. Defender is turned off. But... it really wasn't. It began blocking some of my programs (yes, they had pirate cracks that I wanted). I made SURE Windows Defender was turned off yet I got a task bar memo that said that one of my programs (already installed) was being blocked by Windows Defender. (No, I do not have... ever... running antivirus software. No, I had a very clean install of W7 at the time. I do have scanning antivirus software when I need it. All was clean except the cracks I have used for years with W7.)

Hard drives were horribly slow. Disk to disk copy was slow.

Long story short: I got so frustrated with the crap that I reformated my disk and put W7 back on. I am typing this post using W7. All is back to normal except those files that W10 encrypted and refused to decrypt.

My gaming rig will NEVER have W10. Now, neither will my house server.

I think you would need to move your 1.5.8 to the drive you want 2.5 on. I believe the update effectively replaces the build being updated. If you would rather preserve your 1.5.8 you could wait for the installer to become available and use that to install 2.5 directly to the third SSD.

Wait for the 2.5 installer to become available from the downloads section of the DCS website, choose your installation location and then you’ll be good to go.

I have a 400 something Gb (1/2 of a 1T SSD) with 1.5 Open Beta with FC3, A-10C, P-51, Spitfire, Fw-190, MiG-15, F-86, Mirage, Viggen, Huey, and Gazelle; 2.2 Open Alpha with NTTR and Normandy, X-Plane 11, IL-2 BOM, BOS, and Cliffs of Dover Blitz, and a bunch of Steam games, and had 40 Gb free. Yeah, it sounds big enough:megalol:

I have moved the XP 11 and the Steam games over to an HDD to free up about 204 Gb in preparation for 2.5 OB.

I believe 1.5 OB will be UPDATED and then it will ask if you want to delete 2.2,

there wont be a separate install when you update 1.5, it will be like a normal update other than the differences ;)

I don't think there will be enough room on my SSD drive to have both 2.5 and 2.2 installed before 2.5 deletes 2.2 (i assume that the deletion will not occur until 2.5 is fully installed)

The 2.5 install will make use of the 2.2 files, updating them and adding the Caucasus map. So you may well be fine if you have room for the new map.

DCS is trying to make the upgrade path simple but life does make it harder. My current situation is that I have 1.58 stable on a regular HD and 2.2 alpha on an SSD drive that has only 48GB free of 111GB. I have nothing on the SSD drive except for 2.2.

I want to end up with 1.5.8 Final on my regular HD and 2.5 final on my SSD drive.

I don't think there will be enough room on my SSD drive to have both 2.5 and 2.2 installed before 2.5 deletes 2.2 (i assume that the deletion will not occur until 2.5 is fully installed), so my solution is either to buy a bigger SSD drive or delete the Nevada terrain from 2.2, then install 2.5, let it delete 2.2 and then reinstall the Nevada terrain. Even with the method, I am not sure my SSD is big enough for both Nevada and the new Caucasus terrain. Comments?

My other question is that I want my existing 1.58 stable to go to1.58 final on my regular HD, but not install 2.5 on that drive, but on my SSD drive. Hopefully, I will be given that option.

For some unknown reason, my wife refuses to discuss these important issues.

Depending on vague estimation from BigNewy, or more detailed one in other part of the forum from Chizh, 2.5 with everything installed will take bewteen 100-ish and 113 GB (don't know if they count official campaigns or not), so even if you don't own all modules, you'll be running out of space (mind you, SSDs don't like to be stuffed full, for performance and longetivity reasons).

Edit - ah, you don't own Normandy? That's minus 9 gigs then. Still not much space saved.

The 2.5 install will make use of the 2.2 files, updating them and adding the Caucasus map. So you may well be fine if you have room for the new map.

Sobe, I think that that 111 GB SSD would be cutting it fine, even without 2.2 on it.

The 2.5 install makes use of usable files like the Nevada map is by *copying* it, so having the Nevada map on your PC will save download but not storage space. The additional space used by the 2.5 installation will be just as much regardless of whether the installation drive that has your 2.2 install on it because there would be two copies of the Nevada map on it from the time of the 2.5 installation until you remove 2.2 or 2.5.

SSDs need free space in order to function properly, and for your SSD (I'll spare you the numbers) you should read it as having 103 GB usable. Art-J referenced comments made elsewhere by BigNewy and Chizh that suggested the 2.5 install size will be between 91 GB and 104 GB without Normandy (and that may not even count official campaigns), so you might not have enough usable space to start with, and best case you might have 12 GB usable space remaining before you even think about updates or new purchased content. Up to you if you want to wait and see how it works out, but personally I'd view that SSD as being too small and seek a solution before installing 2.5.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

What about 2.5 with just caucasus and nevada plus mirage and huey?

Will that be below 100gb?

I guess it will. If Nevada+Mirage+Huey is your current 2.2 config, add about 14 gigs for the new map and you've got the ballpark figure.

If there is a prompt to delete 2.2, then why not have an option to move 2.2 files during 2.5 update rather than copy them. That would save space required for install.
