I did some testing with HTC Vive Pro

in SteamVR Beta 1.1.3

Motion smoothing off

In DCS

Texture HIGH

Terrain textures HIGH

Civ traffic LOW

Visib range HIGH

Anisotropic filtering 2X

Trees visibility 50%

Other settings OFF

cockpit display resolution 1024

PD 1.0

Tested with A10C in 2nd training mission by learning high and close to ground

With 180% Supersamping setting in SteamVR frame timing (projected to vr hud) shows timing between 14-16 ms and occasionally when going close to ground, flying over small villages etc it goes over 20 ms. FPS stays around 45 with 14-16 ms (if frame timing goes over 11ms you start to drop frames and FPS out of 90). When timing goes over 20 ms then also fps drops to 25-30 and you notice screen freezes but with 45 fps it is quite stable.

If motion smoothing is turned on in SteamVR then there is small loss of FPS and it is not stable even in 45 FPS when flying straight so definitely without Motion smoothing I get better fps.

When I change SteamVR supersample setting to 150& then FPS is around 85-90 and frame timing between 11-12 ms. Those small spikes it jumps to 12 or 13 ms then fps drops to 80 or so but that is not enough to notice any drops.

Same time CPU is around maxium 50% utilization so definitely graphic card is limiting factor at the moment in my setup.

Hardware specs

I5-9600 @4.9

32 GB 2666 Mzh DDR4

DCS runs on own Samsung 860 SSD with Samsung Magician enabled

Asus 1080Ti few percent overclocked to 1750. I plan to test how much it is possible to oc and to keep still game stable).

Alright some of geniuses out there. Please help. I've only been on dcs for about 2 weeks. I'm currently running an ASUS ROG GL12cx with an 17 9700 stock clock 3.6, 16g stock ram and an RTX 2080, with an HTC vive pro vr. I have read tons of threads, watched countless videos and I cannot seem to get the game to run smooth AT all. At altitude I can get 90 fps no problem, on the ground 40 to 45 consistent but inbetween in bounces around like crazy and I get terrible stutters. I've even installed the shader pack suggested (hopefully right as that was super confusing). What settings should I try? I can take the 45 or 60 fps if thats the best I can get but I still get massive stutter and it Max's out my VRAM. Please give me your suggested setting from in game visuals, to vr visuals in game, to steam settings, to nvidia settings. I'm losing my mind. We have an awesome station set up for flight simming and I just can't get it right. Thanks so much in advance guys. I really appreciate it.

90fps - 40fps sounds like you're getting really good fps and probably nothing wrong with your setting.  Bouncing around like crazy and stutters... will need more detail.  Under what situation?  If it's heavy mission or multiplayer, then your RAM might be on the low side.  32GB is recommended by ED for VR in heavy missions.

These are my current settings and I'm getting consistent 45fps with absolutely no stutter in any situation even in Syria.  My system is much slower than yours except RAM.  i7-4790K, GTX-1080, and 32GB RAM.

I've also reverted my Nvidia driver to 446.14 per SteamVR recommendation and seems to be more stable.

SteamVR resolution, I try to keep it at 1.5x the vertical native resolution.  If you have more horsepower, try to get 2x.

Unfortunately the stutter is all the time. Frames are steadier in going through training modules etc. But the stutter is always there. In missions it's slightly worse and does max out VRAM.   Multi-player frames are all over the place, only time anything is smooth is super high up.

Did you do all the standard housekeeping stuff on Windows like disabling GPU scheduling, fullscreen optimizations, pagefile, registry tweaks....

Yes I did. Would lowering the native resolution on my main setup monitor help, as in, in the windows settings? I feel like powering a 3440 35" monitor, plus VR plus a hdmi supported predator may be asking too much of the card..

You can try but it should not make a difference.  GPU spends most of its cycle calculating the frames.  Not drawing them.

For example, if you set your game resolution to 720x480, then set it to fullscreen on your 4K display, it doesn't spend any more GPU cycle "filling up" all the pixels on your monitor.

VR mirror is same thing.  Everything is already calculated for your VR headset.  And it's just "filling in" the pixels on your monitor as mirror.  There are people who are absolutely convinced that it takes extra resources.  Even when Steam, Oculus, HTC, all manufacturers says it doesn't.  I'm done trying to convince them.

What is final resolution output indicated in your SteamVR Per Application setting?  And what is your in-game PD?  You have to have DCS running in order for SteamVR Per Application setting to take affect.  And then restart DCS.

Perhaps you should post your settings.

What's hdmi supported predator?  Is that second monitor?  If you have dual monitor in extended mode, then that's different story.  Then your GPU is calculating extra pixels.  I have dual monitor setup plus VR.  I plugged my second monitor to onboard graphic card instead of my GTX 1080.

I just put in your exact settings and it's better.  Still quite Pixelmator. I was able to get 50 fps on the ground , around 60 low level flying in dense areas, and 70 to 90 at altitude.  Still that damn stutter though.  Also I could see occasional black half moons in the top of the lenses. ( I wonder if I installed the shader pack from the optimization video wrong) as it's only been doing that sense I attempted that. JSGME and the programs I needed to extract those files were very tough for me to try to figure out.  All this was done in a free flight mode. I was able to see the cockpit gouges much better and it never surpassed 93 percent VRAM.   I HEAR THAY shader pack is a world of difference so I think I may have done that part wrong. But all in all an improvement with your settings.

If you're referring to Kegetys shader, he hasn't been around for awhile and that mod isn't kept up to date.  I recommend this consolidated one by speed-of-heat for less confusion.

I'd also recommend reverting Nvidia driver to 446.14 per SteamVR recommendation.

Reinstall SteamVR from Steam.  Or at least delete local files and let it reinstall.

Also delete fxo and metashaders2 from /SavedGames/DCS/  This will cause slow loading at first.  It takes about 5 minutes for me.

The shaders are Lucas S version. Last updated July 2020.  Those are the ones I installed.  I deleted the fxo and metashaders when I did the shader reccomendation. Do you need to do that often? More than once?

I'm not familiar with Lucas S version.

No, I usually delete them after an update or something is really wrong.

Also try this.  This is my own config optimization.  Install to main DCS install path using JSGME or OvGME.

That version is a little old, and as the mod is in the core game files these get over written each time the game is updated.  Which means that you should uninstall the mod, before each update and reinstall.

Your information helped a ton. Frames are better I am seeing 60 on the ground and 90 at altitude. Cockpits are still pretty hard to see and the stutter is still there. I did just order 32gb of crucial ddr4 max to upgrade to. Hope that helps a little. Also probably a good idea to unplug that 3rd monitor I had in the hdmi port to monitor gpu🤫🤫🤫 lol.

Did you do GearVR lens mod?  That along with barrel distortion adjustment made things whole lot more clear for my Vive Pro so that may be why I can live with lower resolution.  I had two GearVR for free when I pre-ordered GalaxyS8+ so it was virtually free mod but even if you have to buy GearVR off ebay, I highly recommend it.  It is single biggest improvement to Vive Pro.

Oddly enough.... swapped in 32g of crucial ballistic RAM today and boom. Between your settings and double the RAM I had before smooth and still getting 60 fps on the ground and down low and full 90 at altitude.   I did read and article saying this game will revert back to using general RAM when you max out VRAMM.  We'll that seemed to do the trick.  Thanks a ton for your help!
