DarkFire Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 I have a friend who's brand new to DCS. He's not in to fixed wing but loves his choppers. Primarily he wants to learn chopper piloting but would also like to blow stuff up occasionally. What chopper module should I recommend to him? System Spec: Cooler Master Cosmos C700P Black Edition case. | AMD 5950X CPU | MSI RTX-3090 GPU | 32GB HyperX Predator PC4000 RAM | | TM Warthog stick & throttle | TrackIR 5 | Samsung 980 Pro NVMe 4 SSD 1TB (boot) | Samsung 870 QVO SSD 4TB (games) | Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. Personal wish list: DCS: Su-27SM & DCS: Avro Vulcan.
jaxx_za Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 UH-1H without a doubt. It's the closest there is to a civilian chopper, with the option of blowing stuff up. Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Yurgon Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 UH-1H without a doubt. It's the closest there is to a civilian chopper, with the option of blowing stuff up. This! Plus, the flight model is top notch, it's just always a joy to fly this helo. If he's interested in east tech, the Mi-8 would also be a great choice. Bonus points if he's into the Mi-24, which is coming somewhere down the road from the same devs. The Ka-50 is a total killer on the battlefield, but with its coaxial rotors and advanced stability augmentation systems, it's very different from most other choppers. I like the Gazelle, but I just can't shake the feeling that the flight model feels a bit synthetic, too much as if the chopper was flying on rails. Not meaning to restart the countless debates that have taken place, that's just my personal feeling though, maybe that's exactly the way it flies in real life, I don't know. Anyway, with UH-1H and Mi-8 your friend simply can't go wrong.
Reflected Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 I'd also recommend the Huey. It can be flown as a civilian chopper, or a gunship when he feels like blowing stuff up. Facebook Instagram YouTube Discord
lemoen Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 Yup. Mi8 is the best one (more versatile, more weapons, more speed) but the UH-1 is a close second (very simple to operate). Both are awesome.
jaxx_za Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 While I haven't spent nearly as much time with the MI-8 as I have with the Huey, I find the latter to be more nimble and responsive, and therefore fun to hover. The Mi-8 on the other hand seems to carry a lot of momentum, requiring upfront planning and incremental changes. So IMHO if your buddy wants the experience of a smaller civilian heli, the Huey would be the way to go. Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk

ouPhrontis Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 To throw a spanner into the works; I bought the SA342 module and found that quite manageable - using CH full HOTAS set - I haven't flown any of the other rotary-wing modules, yet. FragBum Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 I would say the Gazelle however you need decent controls to get the most out of any helicopter doubly so the Gazelle. It's just any easy helicopter to fly pick up set down hover and the Minigun variant from the left seat gives an awesome amount of situational awareness when manoeuvring in close. It feels pretty much like a light helicopter feels. IMO a joystick just wont cut it you need a cyclic, collective and pedals, sure you'll get them off the ground but you'll quickly find a joystick limiting. Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment. Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above. Currently rolling with a Asus Z390 Prime, 9600K, 32GB RAM, SSD, 2080Ti and Windows 10Pro, Rift CV1. bu0836x and Scratch Built Pedals, Collective and Cyclic.
Meiz Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 Huey or MI-8 would be great buys. I love the MI-8 more but I would personally say the huey as a first. It's more difficult to fly than the MI-8 but the systems are more simple and the cockpit makes more sense (has a cleaner layout), it's also easier to start and use the weapons. Both are fantastic modules, easily some of the best in the sim. Might also be good to send them Chucks guides for the Huey and MI-8, they can see some of the deeper details of each in an easy to understand format.
DarkFire Posted June 1, 2018 Author Posted June 1, 2018 Thanks everyone for the further advice. Food for though.
