Hi Alpenwolf, I was working as a GCI for blue team recently on "Open Range" and I was scratching my head a bit trying to vector strikers -- I think the grid references in the briefing might be off. If I am looking at it right, I think the Water Station is found in KQ80 and the Factory Complex/Bull is in KQ60.

I'll check it out. Thanks for reporting.

Overall, really enjoying the missions on Server so far. Many thanks for running it Alpenwolf.

 

quick check .... Are the waypoints, say in "When the Mountains cry' for example, just a general location by the lake or are they supposed to be already over the water towers, say at lake four for example?

Just like tom said, in some missions the waypoint are right on top of the TA. In When The Mountains Cry, the waypoints guide you to the lakes only. To kinda make you look for the targets, I guess :smilewink:

I can verify that if server has slmod instaled on it A-4 mod won't pass IC.

 

 

 

Message will appear stating that ''Client is tainted''...

It won't appear instantly, but in let'ss just say 15-20 minutes from mission start, this will happen.

 

My squad did test it on our server couple of times, and when we are running slmod we get that message.

I don't run the slmod.

New Mission Is Available: (Added to rotation. Expect it tomorrow on Friday)

 

Operation Elbrus

 

Situation:

Red airbases: Sochi, Gudauta, Sukhumi, FARP Kapel

Blue airbases: Maykop, Vody, Nalchik, FARP Warsaw

 

Mission duration 6 hours.

 

Mount Elbrus is vital to both nations to establish a communication centre right on top of the Caucasus region. In addition to that each coalition has one FARP that be captured and recaptured. The Red nation holds the dam at the Inguri river, while the Blue nation holds a factory at the town of Psebay.

Red Briefing:

Fighters:

- Fly to bullseye, mount Elbrus, and provide CAP.

- Escort strikers flying their strike missions.

Strikers:

- Waypoint 1 is the enemy's FARP at KP64. Destroy all units.

- Waypoint 2 is the enemy's factory at the town of Psebay at FJ48. Destroy all buildings.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mi-8's:

- Deploy troops to capture the enemy's FARP, once all his units are destroyed.

- Capture mount Elbrus. To do so, we need to carry at least 3 cargos using sling loading out of 10 available cargo units that are 1.5 km west of our FARP Kapel. Losing all cargo units wont enable us to capture the Elbrus. So fly carefully and deploy the cargo right on the top of the mountain. You can deploy troops and MANPAD's to defend our position from enemy Huey's trying to capture the Elbrus too.

 

Note:

If we lose our FARP, we can recapture it by using Mi-8's from Sukhumi.

AWACS 21: 124 MHz (Channel 0 for MiG-21's and L-39's)

AWACS 15: 4.95 MHz (tuned by default for MiG-15's)

If I add the A-4 then everyone who wants to fly on the server will have to have the mod regardless of whether they want to fly it or not, correct? That might scare off some players who are not planning on adding the mod then.

yep, ED would need to add the A4 as AI plane, otherwise it would not work - it would be handled as mandatory mod

it is much more believable now, not to fly with blue sky only ;)

I'm pretty sure ED could be convinced. I mean all they need to do as fix the AI issues and add it as an asset in the game. So as for playing it the folks just need to download it otherwise it's there

As for the A-4 being a tanker, the one we have also does have the capability, however I don't think you can do it as a player. I think only the AI can operate that

As a suggestion; You could publish variations of the same missions into your rotation with weather and ToD changes. For example, having two versions of "mountain whispers" on the server, one in clear daylight and another early morning with some fog and cloud. You woulnd't need to spend much time and effort making new mission files either, just a couple of changes and you effectively have an entire new mission in the rotation.

 

 

Repeating this for all 10 or so missions on the rotation and suddenly you have 20 to 30 missinons on the server.

 

 

I'd love to be able to use more of the poor-weather capabilities fo the Viggen on the server, for example, but the current pre-disposition for midday + clear skies in almost all missions means that this capability never/seldom gets to be deployed online.

The only reason behind the clear skies and shiny days is spotting airplanes. It's hard anyway to spot bandits, so imagine that in a rainy mission or the like. Phone Booth is the only mission with such weather and many players have complained about that ever since I released, which is almost 3 years ago. But you know what, let me change the weather in one mission, Open Range, and see how people react to it. I'll make sure Open Range runs tonight so more people can have an opinion on the matter.

Also, I have to agree with Phil and dFlow; I would welcome some weather. One map I could see it really working on is "Supervision." A solid 10/10 overcast layer from like 7000-9000 feet would let Blue strike both comm sites above the weather and hit the convoy under it. Both teams could still takeoff and recover in visual conditions.

 

 

The only concern I have concerning weather is that I have heard that individual cloud positions aren't global - IE clouds in a 5/10 layer won't appear in the same place across each client across multiplayer, so one player might think there is a cloud between him and a bandit, when in fact on the other player's machine he is clearly visible. Kinda limits mission designers to solid overcast layers...

Exactly that. Although I like your idea for Supervision. Currently Open Range is online. Rain, wind and a bit of fog were added.

Currently Open Range is online. Rain, wind and a bit of fog were added.

 

Played it, loved it. The slightly reduced visibility and ceiling made striking the red FARP seem much more claustrophobic (in a good way), particularly with the Migs racing in. Aircraft spotting was fine, just normal DCS.

 

I went on top of the weather from Maykop to the FARP. I wouldn't mind having the upper layer slightly lower, maybe like the overcast from 15000 to 17000, just so one wouldn't have to drag a full load of rockets all the way up into the low 20's to clear the weather. I can see some fun scenarios working out if F5s are willing to fly inbound to the targets in IMC- the MiGs will have to either actually use radar missiles or have a good GCI to conduct the intercept, and it might be fun to see some high altitude fights above the clouds. All of that is just one man's opinion though, however it works out some variation in the scenarios was great, so thanks!

This is my favourite server and many Thanks for it.

 

 

I have one small request. Would it be possible to allow the L-39Z to remove the gun camera.

 

All the red side planes have really bad view from the cabin but on L-39 this thing blocks so much view...

 

 

In DCS special options I marked the gun camera to be removed and it works fine everywhere but not on this server so my guess is that the special options for L39 were blocked on cold war.

All of that is just one man's opinion though, however it works out some variation in the scenarios was great, so thanks!

Even if it's one man's opinion, that opinion can be golden. However, I've got to say that many players have approached me on the weather issue, so it was just about time I did it, I guess.
