sobe Posted August 19, 2018 Posted August 19, 2018 Can someone please tell me what the following bomb abbreviations represent in the stores page? 68s 82x 83B 84 76 RE RET Are there other ones that I missed? Trackir4 using the latest Trackir 5 software, Win10 Pro [Creator Update] updated from Win7Pro Pro 64Bit, Intel® Core™ i5-2500 3.30 GHz 6M Intel Smart Cache LGA115 , GigaByte GA-Z68XP-UD4 Intel Z68 Chipset DDR3 16GB Ram, GTX MSI Gaming 1060 [6 GB] Video Card, Main Monitor 1 on left 1920x1080 Touchscreen Monitor 2 on right 1920x1080 .
Nealius Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 82B -- Mk82 82X -- Mk82 SnakeEye 83B -- Mk83 84 -- Mk84 RE -- Mk20 RET -- CBU99 76 -- BDU33 10S -- LAU10 61S -- LAU61 68S -- LAU68 My ground crew had a nice workout today  I'm curious about the chosen abbreviations. Why 'X' for SnakeEyes? Why 'B' for Mk82 and Mk83, but not for Mk84? Why 'RE' and 'RET' for cluster munitions? Why 'S' for rockets? Why '76' for BDU33?
sobe Posted August 20, 2018 Author Posted August 20, 2018 thanks. I am also curious about the abbreviations. Nealius Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 I think single-shot and ripple are options in the ME. I know in the Harrier they work, but I haven't tried rockets at all in the Hornet yet. The Mk76 name is interesting. What's the story on it having two names?
Eldur Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 I'll try to get those abbreviations together 82B -- Mk82 82X -- Mk82 SnakeEye 83B -- Mk83 84 -- Mk84 No clue about the B and the 84 not having it. Same goes for the X, I can also just guess it's the shape. If I'm not completely mistaken I remember the Snakeyes showing up as RET in the past and I always thought it stands for "retarded", but well, that also shows up on the CBU-99. RE -- Mk20 RET -- CBU99 RE simply stands for RockEye and the T means Thermally protected which is Navy stuff. Thanks to Frederf for describing. 76 -- BDU33 Has been mentioned already, Mk. 76. Must be an older designation. 10S -- LAU10 61S -- LAU61 68S -- LAU68 LAU-Number + Single or Ripple.
Nealius Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 If X is for SnakeEye, what would be used for 82AIR?
Frederf Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 (edited)
DDI|Store 76|BDU-33 82_|MAU-93 fin BDU-45 (B/P for blunt/penetrator nose cap) 82_T|MAU-93 fin BDU-45 (B/P for blunt/penetrator nose cap) 82X|Mk15 Mod6 Snakeye 82XT|Mk15 ModA Snakeye (TP) 82YT|BSU-86 TP, pilot option (also used for NTP with non-ideal ballistics) 82S_|BSU-33 fin TP (B or P for nose shape, also NTP non-ideal) 82LG|GBU-12 or LGTR 83_T|Mk83 LD (B or P for nose shape) 40TF|Mk83 83LG|GBU-16 84LG|GBU-10 GB24|GBU-24 J84|JDAM Mk84 J109|JDAM BLU-109 JDAM|JDAM training 62_O|Mk36, T for Mk15 Mod6 Snakeye, X for Mk16 paratail 36|Mk36, BSU-86
S and R are singles and ripple intervalometer settings respectively So "82" are old MAU-93 fins. "82S" are new BSU-33 fins. "82X" and "82Y" are Snakeye and BSU-86 retard devices respectively. It doesn't look like F/A-18 uses any ballute retarding devices on 500 lb. weapons the exception being the Mk16 ballute for the Mk36 mine (which is very similar to BSU-49 AIR for Mk-82). 1000 lb. uses BSU-85 which is ballute type or older MAU-91. I don't know why BSU-49 is not used for F/A-18. Maybe never had it cleared or didn't have enough space to load the extra ballistics config. Edited August 21, 2018 by Frederf
Nealius Posted August 20, 2018 Posted August 20, 2018 (edited) That is very strange about the BSU-49. I have seen many pictures/videos of Legacy Hornets dropping them or loaded with them in the Desert Storm days. Those don't appear to be using the BSU-49 fins...what are they? BSU-85 ballute on BLU-111 (Mk-83). 500 lb. bombs from F/A-18 which have non-metalltic drag device are: Mk 36 Destructor with Mk 16 (BSU-49 casing with parachute replacing ballute) Mk 62 Quick Strike with Mk 16 (as above) All other 500 lb. bombs from F/A-18 use metallic drag device.
Nealius Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 Interesting. I wonder if we'll get high-drag Mk83s, or the USN gray paint on bombs.
Nealius Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Huh, sounds just like my struggles with trying to move up academia .
