derbynew Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 (edited) When I am in the cockpit, if I just move the rudder pedals, I get a lot of shimmering on the shadows and lines in the distance shimmer and flicker to. Using TrackIR makes the problem extreme to the point where I do not use TrackIR anymore. I do not have this problem with other games. I totally removed and added my NVidia Game drivers. This is a brand new PC. So would love the graphics to be perfect. Below is a link to the Video. Lixma 06 Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 The shadows become blocky/jagged at certain angles - that's just a DCS thing. But the reason they're 'shimmering' when you move your pedals is that you're turning slightly the nose of the aircraft.
Goa Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 exactly, you slighlty move the nose of the aicraft, and that's not a problem, put shadows to flat and low :) CPU : Intel i7 8700k@5.0ghz cooled by Noctua NH-D15 / Motherboard:Asorck Z370 Taichi / RAM: 32GB GSkill TridentZ @3600mhz / SSD: 500GB Nvme Samsung 970 evo+1 TB Sabrent Nvme M2 / GPU:Asus Strix OC 2080TI / Monitor: LG 34KG950F Ultrawide / Trackir 5 proclip/ VIRPIL CM2 BASE + CM2 GRIP + F148 GRIP + 200M EXTENSION /VKB T-Rudder MKIV rudder /Case: Fractal Design R6 Define black
derbynew Posted November 7, 2018 Author Posted November 7, 2018 I am not sure that is correct. Look at this video, when he moves the aircraft, there is no shimmering on shadows, so I do not think this is expected behaviour. derbynew Posted November 7, 2018 Author Posted November 7, 2018 I set up shadows to flat and low and still have the shimmering on Shadows when moving the Pedals. Lixma 06 Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 (edited) It's because you're moving the plane. The shadows are not connected to your pedals. I promise. e: look Edited November 7, 2018 by Lixma 06
Yurgon Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 (edited) I am not sure that is correct. Look at this video, when he moves the aircraft, there is no shimmering on shadows, so I do not think this is expected behaviour. Are you referring to the 14:00 mark, when he tests the flight controls? At that point, NWS is off. In your video, NWS is on, so while Wags really only moves the pedals and the rudders, you're also turning the nose wheel, which in turn makes the nose move a little bit, and that nose-movement causes the shadows to move across your front dash. Edit: My mistake, Wags has NWS on at that moment, so apparently the fact that he doesn't have these shimmering shadows has another cause. /Edit But regardless if it's triggered by the peals or not, you're right about the shadow shimmering, though I really can't say if this is normal or not. I think the cockpit shadows should look a lot crisper at the edges, especially on your rig. Then again, I don't know if maybe some of your override settings in the Nvidia driver might cause the effect rather than remove it. I have mine mostly at defaults for DCS ("Application default") and will take a look at the shadows on my next flight. Edited November 7, 2018 by Yurgon
derbynew Posted November 8, 2018 Author Posted November 8, 2018 Any help is appreciated. I used the pedals as an example, but with Trackir It is really bad. I just move my head and the shadows in cockpit shimmer and text as well. Trackir is not moving the aircraft. Happy to post a video with how it looks using trackir. I promise. e: look Hi, I understand your comment, however I chose the pedals as an example as I could remove all usb devices. I will post a video showing how bad it is when using TrackIR, that is just moving my head in the cockpit, which does not move the plane, and the shadows and text in the cockpit shimmer really badly that I cannot play with TrackIR. Will post a video shortly :) Romiko Derbynew --------------------------------------------------------------- Intel® Core i5-9600K CPU @ 4.8GHz Corsair Vengeance XMP 32GB - CMW32GX4M4C3000C15 MSI NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Gamzing Z 8GB MSI Z390 Gaming Edge AC Motherboard NZXT H500 Case EVGA 650W P2 Power Supply NH U12S CPU Cooler - 2 fans 2 Inlet fans - Noctua 2 outlet fans - Noctua
derbynew Posted November 8, 2018 Author Posted November 8, 2018 Alright, here is a video showing just how bad the shimmering is when using a device to track head movements like TrackIR. Its pretty terrible. Notice at 33 seconds, I disable trackir and the image is perfect. Surely this is not by design and is unacceptable? Yurgon Posted November 8, 2018 Posted November 8, 2018 Actually it turns out I have pretty much the exact same type of shimmering shadows. I just never noticed it, or it didn't distract me from the game. Yeah, it would be nice if this got fixed. Personally, I think the added value of having cockpit shadows outweighs their problems, I guess that's why I never really noticed that they weren't quite perfect yet.
BuzzU Posted November 8, 2018 Posted November 8, 2018 Simple fix. I turn off shadows. Just make believe it's a cloudy day. Buzz
Lixma 06 Posted November 8, 2018 Posted November 8, 2018 Notice at 33 seconds, I disable trackir and the image is perfect. Think about how a game looks when you turn anti-aliasing off. While it's paused the jagged edges are not terribly noticeable. But when the image starts moving around (e.g. while using Track-IR) the harsh edges start shimmering horribly. That's all that's happening with the shadows in DCS. Even on 'High' they are relatively low resolution and at certain angles they just look like saw-tooths. If you want to dabble with the shadow resolution check this thread.... https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=218208
Sadist_Cain Posted November 8, 2018 Posted November 8, 2018 that seems like it's an incredibly low framerate especially for those specs, though it could just be an artifact of recording. What are the frames? what resolution are you running?
derbynew Posted November 8, 2018 Author Posted November 8, 2018 Disabling all Shadows and the problem is gone. I think we need a better Shadow Render algorithm to take into account tilting the head and working well with a TrackIR system. I did implement a deadzone to reduce it, but I think I am going to fly without shadows until we get better shadows. Any plans in the future to improve shadows? Especially with TrackIR running...
