Roughly which year would our F-14 be? I was hoping to petition Heatblur to add another squadron to the t-shirts they're selling...

I think they said 1996 is the era?

Ah ok cool, thanks!

Yeah I think they said mid 90's before DFCS

Thank you too. Good to have confirmation.

Alas, VF Satan’s Kittens no longer existed then but that’s ok. I didn’t think about it before now, but how awesome is it that they organized to have t-shirts with the logos of a bunch of different squadrons! Just one more example of their attention to detail I guess.

VF-191 was also an A model squadron they existed from 86 to 88 along with their sister squadron VF-194 Red Lightnings, maybe we will get such shirts when the A model comes out. Personally I've been hoping for a 142 shirt.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. The VF-142 logo and name are awesome :-)

The Heatblur F-14B is essentially 1988-1996 or 1997, basically from "as built" to the addition of LANTIRN. It is not a "F-14B Upgrade" that had the additional data bus, nor does it have DFCS. Both the F-14A and F-14B will have the same control system (AFCS) save for the later version of DLC on the F-14B, while the F-14A has the "old" DLC.

The F-14A is 1987-1991 since it has the changes to the gunsight software incorporated around 1987, along with TCS and TF30-P-414A engines.

I hope this helps to clear things up.

This is fantastic, going to be able to live my Red Storm Rising fantasy of defending the Nimitz against hordes of TU-22M3's in 1988. So many Cold War scenarios to play out. Without a doubt an Iceland terrain should be a must for the F-14.

The same for me. I'm also interested in Cold War scenarios.

Mighty Tomcats became more or less pointless after the fall of the Soviet Union after all.

A like Hornet, but it really doesn't fir the DCS main timeframe with the variant we have. All planes in DCS represented at most 80/90 standard except Hornet and simplified AI Su-34.

1980/90 Hornet variant would be welcome.

Hello,

Do you mean specifically, the gunsight doubling as AIM-9 seeker head symbol ?

No, in this case it refers to the ability of the gunsight to indicate bullet at target range, i.e. where the bullets are at the time they would have hit the target if aimed correctly.

Using the gun pipper as AIM-9 seekerhead indication is an older mod, and also the gun pipper is used to indicate other different things depending on mode and type of munition.

The original F-14 HUD had a quite limited set of symbols available and they had to do a lot of different things depending on mode.

Hello Naquaii,

That I didn't know, thank you for the insight.

You're absolutelly right about the part where they had to do a lot wiith the existing technology.

The "little" detail about the gun pipper also becomming the AIM-9 seeker head symbol was ingeniuous.

Besides, for much that today levels of HUD symbology might aid the pilot with better gun employment parameters info, I do find it also has the disadvantage of cluttering the HUD in excess.

So, that's an aspect which amazed me in the F-14A's HUD symbology - those symbols were somewhat archaic and simple for today standards (and also comparing with F-15, F-16, etc), but at the same time they were already functional enough to do its job.

If you've become used to the data overload from the Hornet HUD, the F-14's HUD is going to seem quite barren by comparison.
