Assuming that O+ with 1.7x pixels will offer less fps than Rift . I spend most of my flight time low over the Caucasus . I don't mind turning down eye-candy settings to near-minimum , but i do have 2 red lines . Shimmering must be minimised , and i don't wanna see trees springing up . Is this possible with the O+ , given my specs below ? I do plan an upgrade to a stock-clocked 7700k in a few months .

While I have the floor , WHY is everyone using Steam to set up WMR ? Does Microsoft WMR app not have everything needed ? Do both Steam and WMR app have to run for DCS ?

Thanks for any and all insights . I'll be ordering one of these 10 days from now , and don't wanna make a mistake .

Yes, SteamVR is required.

I own a Rift, O+, and Vive. I would recommend steering clear of the O+. No other device has given me the amount of setup and reliability headaches as the O+, and to be honest in spite of the higher resolution, it has a blurriness that I find less desirable than the lower Resoultion in the Rift or Vive.

I would wait for the Pimax or a next gen device. The O+ has many other design issues, such as being heavy a and uncomfortable that make it (IMO) inferior to a Rift and perhaps even the Vive.

For the most trouble-free experience, go with the Rift. No SteamVR required, no plug-ins, no tweaks, no special lighting conditions in your gaming area. It just goes right to work after you download Oculus Home and run through the setup process. After that, all you'll have to do to fly in VR in DCS is to just plug the Rift in, start DCS like you always have from the desktop, and it will take care of the rest.

+1!

Thanks ! I should mention that after much research , i decided on the Rift some time back , for many of the reasons here given . It was Strikeagle's through-the-lens pics that that inspired a last look at the O+ , not because they looked so good , rather because I would not want much less fidelity .

Hence the question about relative performance (fps) .

Amen to that! :D I solve technical issues for avionics manufacturers for a living, but those manufacturers are paying me and my company to do that. Unless Samsung tells me they'll do the same, I'm not tweaking a friggin thing. I had the Odyssey for about a week and decided that my time was too valuable to be making their product work for them when they weren't paying me to do so. I've had my Rift for 2 and a half years and haven't had a single issue with it. Added the Touch controllers with their extra sensor, and things just got even better.

So I have the Rift and the O+. Personally I have had no issues with running the O+. But I tend tinker any ways so to put my thinking cap on and learn how to tweak and make it better has not been hard. And the only tinkering I have done has been move a slider in steam VR setting and mod a few lines in steamapp code section. But the real reason I bought the O+ for the lack of SDE. I got this cause the SDE was my main problem with the Rift, the current resolution of the Rift would probably work for me if it wasn't for the screens! So to each his own I just wanted the throw this in here that the O+ is not that bad or hard to adjust.

Thanks for that:) How many frames are you getting with the O+ vs the Rift ? Did you have to lower settings for the O+ ?

I must contend that I definitely still see a SDE in the Odyssey+, in spite of the advertised anti SDE technology. I've compared both simultaneously while being ran on two PCs and while there may be slightly more SDE on the Rift, it's still there on the Odyssey. The trick is not looking for it IMO.

And I post my last not to be contract but to instead just warn potential buyers that the SDE (screen door effect for those who don't know) is definitely still there even in the O+. That's only so someone won't buy the device for the advertised lack of SDE only to be dissapointed like I was.

Interestingly enough... Out of all the VR devices I own, the PSVR actually has the lowest SDE! It sucks at everything else tho!

Ok so on different occasions of using the O+ if i stop and force myself to focus on the screen its self i do see small little pixels. But to me its 90% percent better. I will not go back myself to the Rift. As for FPS currently my specs are I7 4790K 4.7 OC 16gbs ram and GTX 1070. I have not really set down to get a base line tweaking of settings. But i fly the harrier in a small mission with 8 stationary vehicles on the ground in Caucus and I get between 35 to 55fps depending location. Mostly 45fps.

I set the Steam VR Application to 200%

Video 100%

"renderTargetScale" 2.0

DCS PD 1.0

Texture and Terrain Textures High

Civ Traffic Off

Water High

Visib Range High

Heat Blur Off

Shadows Off

MSAA Off

Depth of Field Off

Lens Effect None

Motion Blur Off

SSAA Off

Clutter/Grass 0

Tree visibility 50%

Preload Radius max

I have had nothing but the best results from the Odyssey. I use the Odyssey for all my Sims now. Just simply amazing quality for the price. My Vive I use for roomscale games. Odyssey you can see cleaner and crisper images and read all the gauges in the cockpit.

Posted

Odyssey nearly 45 days now, never looking back, richer colors, crisp and clean image compared to the rift. Greater depth, far less eye strain, but not quite as comfortable to break in.

You can also look at the need to adjust code and tune settings for what it really is, potential for future expandability. Rift is at it's lifes end, all your ever going to milk out of it has already been done.

I want to like the Odyssey, god knows I'm all for something to surpass the Rift after using it for years, but my attempt to use the O+ on a multiplayer flight night ended in total disaster. Near constant steam VR gray room pop ins (extremely annoying) and serious blurriness.

If I get the $$$$er working worth a darn I'll update my thoughts here, but I just can't currently recommend it and I'm concerned by the amount of people I see echoing my problems.

OP YMMV, good luck in the decision either way. If you get it just put it through it's paces ASAP so you can return it if it's a mess.

I can also vote for the Rift. I bought the O+ last November in hopes of a better picture quality (no SDE). I mostly use VR to play DCS, and while the O+ does have brighter colors, I haven't seen much improvement in readability of the cockpit gauges, and its sweet spot is much smaller. But what killed if for me was the lack / improper implementation of ASW technology. Whenever your FPS drops below 30 it feels jaggy and choppy. The Rift on the other hand just feels so smooth, even at 20 FPS.

Oh, and the O+ is very uncomfortable for me to wear more than 20 minutes.

My O+ is shelved for now, perhaps I'll give it another go in the future, when ASW is implemented, or when DCS performance is improved overall for VR.

You may want to do your homework. Asw is implemented on the odyssey and it’s better than the rifts. Cockpit readability highly surpasses rift, guess it depends if you have it setup right and good eyes....

I've got the rift, and after using it for a few weeks I'm pretty happy with it on my low end system. But I'm definitely considering the O+ or something better later this year ( like a pimax 5k or something else) once I get a new machine sorted out. I figure alot of the issues with O+ will get worked out in the next few months too.

The main thing for me is that I want improved resolution in the pit, and looking out. All the supersamlping in the world can't make up for the relatively low ppd counts of the current gen headsets. Which are all in the "teen" range (including O+ and 5k). I'd like something with a ppd about double what is currently available. I think the 110 FOV is fine for DCS, I just want more "real" pixels crammed in there.
