Samsung Odyssey + need a bit of help getting beat up by some issues

I just got the SO+ and things are getting better than they were 24 hrs ago.

My main issue is I dont have a base line of what is to be expected and its tough to see because you cant simply just take a screen shot and there are people who say "ive been using VR for Year+ and would never use something that would make me less competitive in DCS ill never use 2d again"

So I am trying to sort out:

what is expected and totally normal

What is an issue cause by a setting that can be adjusted or Work in progress

What could be an unexpected hardware issue (exchange for a new set and try again?)

I have been trying several settings and I found that "the most noticeable and clear result was steam SS:208% /dcs PD 1.0/ dcs msaa off" as described in clear vision tweak. Im fairly sure that this worked better for me than SS to 100 and PD to 1.4 no MSAA.

Now with these settings im getting a pretty solid 45FPS over downtown Dubai with settings close to what was recommended by jabbers in his VR video. I am running an i7 at 5ghz with a strix 2080ti and 32gb of 3200 ram.

Does this example sound like 45fps is what would be expected? I hear people talk about when it gets close to 90fps things get clearer how the hell is anyone getting 90fps is it just in very rare instances? like 10% of the time?

with the above info here are some things are causing me real issues

1) in a dogfight p51 vs fw190 in a head on pass I see a ghost image of the plane maybe 10ft separated from the original. Also when flying past a parachute is this expected and normal? FPS related? A solution?

2) using the Steamvr and DCS settings as described I can almost see how someone could tolerate it and it is usable I can read the temp gauge and read the numbers for the speed but the usable area "sweet spot" seems quite limited it seems like a box shape and is about maybe 1/3 the screen on the splash screen when the mustang loads is has a disclaimer about weapons systems and whatevs when looking slightly down from center this can be recognized as English text but not read I have a feeling that I am losing a lot of clarity because of either the double vision issue with the O+ or because of a hardware issue (the lenses) I dont have a solid understanding of how this works but the Frenzel lens seems like a super cheap option for magnification and as a result we have a TON of fisheye effect near the edge, we have spherical and chromatic aberration causing color separation (blurriness and probably the "god ray" issues that is very obvious near the last 1/3 of the image. Is that normal sounding?

Does anyone know if the frenzel lens is used to save cost or is required by design? If a 1,500 dollar set of apochromatic glass lenses were used would it solve all these issues?

Ive got a pretty strong feeling that its creating a pretty good image but something is totally stomping it. I set IPD based on a somewhat accurate measurement but the image is getting trashed by a lens issue or a software issue creating double vision or slight misalignment I tried the .lua settings from the post "DCS and Odyssey+ cross-eyed!!" but that didnt seem to make much improvement over the DCS implemented software. I feel like its close but not quite right and im not sure how much this would mess things up visual wise.

any input would be good. Its a bunch better now thanks to help from this form but I would have a hard time believing anyone that said this makes them better at DCS so I suspect there's still an issue here that is causing me some problems and I can get some improvement still.

Thanks

I guess vr expectations need to be reset a little based on today's tech. Also the videos posted are not usually 'through the lens' images rather they are monitor captures.

Your specs are higher than mine but tbh we are getting similar perf... It sounds like motion vector is on, in which case it pretty much locks you in to 45fps at the benefit of it being a very smooth 45fps. With your spec I would experiment turning it off...

Also perf and to an extent your ghosting may be a function of your in game settings, experiment with trees & grass but the fps killer for me was distance which I dropped to medium from high.

Finally check u our nvidida settings, I haves basically turned most of them to let the game manage them, e.g, off, though I am still fusing with h fxaa.

As for the lenses they are a compromise on market cost vs functionality, so yes I have no doubt spending 1400 on lenses properly specified wiould help... Not me because I don't have that money spare!

God's rays... Is very specific to your face shape, and you may want to experiment with some after market padding alternatives, I did it helps a lot, some people might need something more custom, but that should be "easy" as padding and velcro are easy to find and cut...

I had a friend come over and try DCS he has the PS4 VR system that I originally tried.

Ive been making adjustments and Ive pretty well sorted out my issues to the point where its enjoyable to fly in vr and he thought it looked really good.

and playing off his experience with the psvr the issue here is the small sweet spot. This is the issues that seems worse than it should.

The sweet spot seems quite narrow and is much narrower than the psvr system I would say after 1/3 away from center the image degrades very quickly.

I try to come up with a way to perhaps compare this

any initial thoughts on this? I was told the SO+ has the largest sweet spot between the vive and rift

Thanks again!

I have no comparison, my experience with the O+ is that it has a very narrow range for a correct fit that said, I get quite good imagery with peripheral vision

yes care must be taken to get the fit just right. This is a screen shot that I edited to simulate as close as possible what I see in terms of how the blur looks including the way it blurs and the severity.

This was done by taking a screen shot of my training window after setting vr view center and looking right at the middle of the screen when you look off center towards an edge without moving your head this is what I see (screen shot below) is that about what you see?

Sweet spot is about the size of the center box surrounding the "name" and "map" columns

this is not a problem I get; and I'm on a considerably less powerful box than you... silly question the lenses have a protective covering on them when mine arrived at any rate; have you removed it ?

lol no worries starting with basics... yes I removed them before putting on the headset the first time.

no matter how I position the headset I can only make it worse. I have good eyesight with no contacts or glasses.

My friend has far crappier eyesight and uses glasses. He seemed to experience the exact same thing to about the same extent. He has many hrs behind the PS4 Vr and his initial reaction was wow this is way better but what the hell is wrong with the edge of the screen.

my initial intro to VR was with his system and after flying a bit I used menu similar to this to check sweet spot size and I could only detect some slight blurriness way way down at the edge of the image like the last 10% of the image had slight blur that you had to look for to see.

Im starting to think this is a hardware issue on the headset side warped lenses or something.

I have changed these settings so far

steamVr Version 1.2.10

"application resolution" to 208%

DCS

Pixel Density to 1.0

No AA

my nvida settings are default I havent even found "VR" settings in there yet

what settings are you using and did you change anything in nvidia control panel?

Could there be a setting im overlooking?

If you were to look at the training screen that I put in the screen shot head on and then look to the left edge at the aircraft icons still clear?

If you were to fly the mustang when a mission loads it has that picture of the p51 sucking the gear up. If you look at the air intake just below the spinner can you read the disclaimer at the bottom " Weapon systems and aircraft associated with them are not endorsed by anyone bla bla bla"

Thanks for helping me compare this!

In steam i set it at 100% as close to the actual physical resolution ass possible in game a pixel density of 1.4. I think the only thing I set in the nvidia panel was anisotropic to 16x.

I get a little blurring at the edge of my vision put nothing like you are discribing

I see it occur about equal in all situations that have suitable complexity (words)

This includes super position VR (a benchmark software that is quite amazing to play with in vr free download to test system but 20 bucks if you want to mess with it in vr pretty much worth it)

Also the IPD display does not display correct values when adjusting IPD. Both lenses move but its suspect that the IPD distance windows just displays random values that vaguely seem to reflect the wheel position. Do yours work proper?

Thanks for the help

Don't trust the IPD read out in the Samsung, ignore it and go by what your eyes know. Mine in an O+ is a couple cm's more than what the rift was. If I try setting it to my actual physical IPD, its very uncomfortable.

Nodak I figured it wasnt too spot on I try to set it so if feels natural...

I seem to be getting more blur on the left side Can you comment on how menus look as far as edge clarity?

For the Odyssey+, someone recommended that in the starting WMR cliffhouse, just go "outside" and look up at the stars and adjust the HMD IPD wheel to where you see one particular star in focus and it feels comfortable.

PC HW 9700K@5.0Ghz

Win 10 (Build 2004 ) with WMR

VR - Reverb

RTX2070 with Nvidia 451.48

DCS 2.5.6 (latest)

yes that sort of works, however, some of the stars are blurred deliberately

I've been using a rift and now O+ now for so long, its automatic to turn my head instead of eyes to look at anything in detail. Pretty much pointless to shift eyes to the edges, probably goes against the intended design any way. Something one adapts to and gets accustomed to with use.

My hardwares are i7 4790k rtx 2080 and 16 Gb RAM with samsung SSD.

I have Odyssey plus headset but I dont think I will be gaming in VR , going back to trackIR. it simply is preposterous the image quality especially in far/mid terrain.

my old gtx 970 was good enough for DCS, i wish I had not upgraded for the sake of VR
