Guys I have a question about the air source.

The sound of the air on is irritating the hell out of me.

I want to switch it off because it becomes so calm then in the pit and I can actually better hear the engines.

So what is the air needed for besides airco!?

Do I need to keep it on or can I switch it off without any consequences?

Most avionics+radar are cooled by the ECS. Switching it off will eventually overheat your equipment. You can use ram air to maintain avionic cooling but this will restrict your flight envlope signifcantly and will inhibit gun firing.

From what I read, the ECS is extremely loud in the real plane. So loud that you almost don't hear the engines.

Per SMEs in other threads, the ECS system isn't loud enough in the sim. They have also commented that you couldn't really hear the engines at all with the ECS running and that newer pilots would turn off ECS on approach so they could hear the engines.

Check out post #20 & #46 in https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=236930&page=2

I saw another post where someone modded the ECS sound mix to make it way louder.

The air keeps the cockpit pressurised, not just ventilated. Not really an issue in DCS as getting the bends isn't modelled, but certainly important in reality!

Other things the air is required for IIRC are:

Wave guide vane pressurisation (radar won't work without it)

Gun gas purging (gun may explode without it - actually there might be an interlock to stop if firing without air althogether)

G- suit

Equipment cooling

Canopy seal

Wing bag inflation

External tank fuel transfer

Internal tank pressurisation

There may be more.

Have you tried to use the "Hear like in Helmet" On.

And/or down the "In-Cokpit" slider.

I have that at 60%, and works perfect for me

Turn your the heat up in your room to 130 degrees to simulate having the air source off on deck on the boat in July. ;)

Just thought you'd literally burn up then, until I remembered that you guys have a different scale after a bunch of seconds rdlaugh.png

Well it's still enough to die, you're exposed to intense sunlight with less atmosphere to cut it above you, in a small enclosed space that acts as a boiler. You'd literally boil off in your suit, ew.

Well, I could move my rig into the attic to simulate that... had 70+°C (158+°F) in the summer up there already. But I guess it'd not be the best idea to try that out, so go for the ECS noise instead dealwithit.png

BTW not having any issues with that and I think it sounds better than in the Hornet.
