Hi,

I'm having all sorts of problems with DCS , SteamVR and my computer in general.

In an effort to sort it out I'm probably going to put in a new Operating system drive.

I have DCS and Steam on a separate games drive.

If I do make a new OS drive can I just copy the files from DCS that are on the old os drive onto the new one and have them work properly ?

If that is possible can someone direct me to the files so that I don't miss any.

Any help greatly appreciated

In "c:\users\yourusername\saved games" you have the DCS folder(s) you need to copy over.

Windows 10 64bit, Intel i9-9900@5Ghz, 32 Gig RAM, MSI RTX 3080 TI, 2 TB SSD, 43" 2160p@1440p monitor.

If you are reinstalling Windows, remember to PREVIOUSLY deactivate those DCS modules that still use Starforce (the ones that have a DRM button on the Module Manager).

Thanks for those.

Can I deactivate the modules easily in windows 10.

I can't get in to DCS to do anything.

I have not used an activation in years apart from new modules, so using an activation shouldn't be a worry ,or is it?

If I have to start all over again do I just download DCS World and login and get the modules I have bought from the module manager.

If I have to , how big is the DCS World download.

I am on a metered download so every bit counts.

Yes, you can. If DCS doesnt start, you can deactivate using windows to navigate to the BIN folder of each module, for example this is the one for the A-10C on my DCS:

Keep in mind that not every module has this protect.exe file, only those that you need to deactivate have it. To deactivate, double click on the protect.exe file, it will show this dialog:

M5gkM3z.jpg

Select deactivate and click next, it will show you this dialog:

lPHnsrF.jpg

Here DONT CLICK the buttons, instead click on the blue "deactivate" link ... that will allow you to deactivate this Module.

Repeat for every Module that has a protect.exe file. Important: the deactivation requires that your PC be connected to Internet, dont do this offline.

I have not used an activation in years apart from new modules, so using an activation shouldn't be a worry ,or is it?

Better safe than sorry, if you still have not changed anything on your PC then you should be able to deactivate and thus you wont lose any of your remaining activations.

If I have to start all over again do I just download DCS World and login and get the modules I have bought from the module manager.

Yes, but no need, just save the folder where you currently have DCS, for example "C:/Program files/Eagle Dynamics/DCS World" on another disk drive or external disk. After you install your new windows you can copy the folder back. This way you will save a huge download.

If I have to , how big is the DCS World download.

I am on a metered download so every bit counts.

It depends on how many maps you have purchased .. should be between 35 and 100 GB more or less. But remember that this is really not necessary if you save your current DCS .. I have never needed to download DCS again and I have upgraded my disks a lot, just keep a copy of it somewhere.

Cheers

Hi Rudel

Thanks for that.

I am running DCS on a separate Games SSD so from the sound of it IF I can sort out windows I should be back in business very quickly.

You can only deactivate your modules while the original copy of Windows, under which they had been installed, is running.

You cannot install a new OS and then deactivate your modules, that was a pitfall.

Hi Toutenglisse,

At the moment I am trying to get back to windows 10 build 1809 from the 1903 I've got at the moment.

I really think the games not loading business is connected to 1903 .

I did have DCS and SteamVR running quite well at times.

Certainly good enough for me given the gear I've got.

Which Virtual thing do you mean ?

Have you got a link to it ?

If I deactivate the modules , do I need the serial numbers to reactivate ?

I just had a look and they still seem to be able to be deactivated but I'm not 100% sure I've got all the serial numbers stored outside the computer.

Thanks for all the advice, I'm trying to work my way through it step by step.

Yes

You can get them here: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/personal/licensing/licenses/

The items with no serial numbers use keyless protection and thus dont need explicit activation, they just need you to be logged on into your ED account.

Hi Rudel , Bitmaster , Toutenglisse ,Thanks for all the help.

I have now loaded a fresh copy of Windows 10 build 1809 onto a new ssd.

So far it looks very good.

All of the programs including DCS and SteamVR are running as they should. Now all I have to do is work my way through and try to get the best possible result I can with the Odyssey.

I've now got 400+gb spare on both ssds so I will definitely be trying virtual memory at the 16384 or whatever is mentioned in that thread.

Once again thank you very much. Owen

Make sure you don't upgrade to 1903 yet. There is a WMR bug that limits the clarity. And O+ is impacted by it. You can read through the the last 40 pages of the VR subthread in the INPUT/OUTPUT forum. The HP Reverb thread's last 40 pages or so. Or jus google for 1903 WMR bug.
