JG4_Sputnik Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 Hi there, I'm looking to upgrade my system to get more frames in VR. I want to fly WW2 mostly and as of yet I have pretty bad FPS on the Normandy map (Nevada for example works pretty well though). My specs: i7 4770K @ 350 GHz Geforce GTX 970 16GB Memory Win 8.1 Oculus Rift CV1 My initial feeling was to upgrade my 970 to a RTX 2070 8 GB (don't know which model though) but then I think that it might be too much for my i7? What would you "easy" fix be to get me some more frames? Thank you, Sputnik
Harlikwin Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 I'd say GFX card first. More RAM should help too. But really everything is the answer. I had a laptop with very similar specs, so no "component" upgrades were possible, and I went to the whole new rig. New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1) Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).
Wicked.- Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 I agree with Harlikwin. The 970 is the most glaring component but if you upgrade to a RTX2070 or 2080Ti, non Ti or Super you'll need more CPU speed to feed it. 5.0Ghz seems to get most people satisfied with performance if not happy so that's what I would go for; the speed increase coming from being overclocked or native boost frequency. Then I'd add another 16GB as 32GB is perfect since the memory leak has been fixed. Lastly, ditch Windows 8.1 and get 10. dburne Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 For the short term: Overclock that cpu to over 4 Ghz. You have a K chip and as long as you have decent cooling should not be too hard. 4.5 GHz should be doable. All you do is up the core multiplier , like 4Ghz would be a multi of 40x (40x100Hz). Run a stress program and insure core temps remain not much higher than 80c. I like to keep mine in the 70's. Get a used 1080 Ti, or a new 2080 card. The 970 needs to go. Upgrade to Windows 10. Down the road, a new build would really serve you well, like an i7 9700k or even i9. DDR 4 ram, 3200 MHz low latency ( CL14). Bob_Bushman Posted September 24, 2019 Posted September 24, 2019 Same, GFX first would yield the most benefit. I also wouldn't bother buying any more RAM for a ddr3 plattform, especially for VR. This was of course before I started playing DCS, but I moved from an i7 4790, z971 plattform to an z370 and i7 8700k while keeping my 1080ti, and the boost in performance, and especially smoothness was suprisingly more than I expected. i7 8700k @ 4.7, 32GB 2900Mhz, 1080ti, CV1 Virpil MT-50\Delta, MFG Crosswind, Warthog Throttle, Virptil Mongoost-50 throttle.
JG4_Sputnik Posted September 25, 2019 Author Posted September 25, 2019 Thank you so much guys. I might be getting a new GPU first then. And try to overclock my i7 and see from there. Maybe also a new CPU eventually... Thanks for the feedback, cheers
wormeaten Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 I'd say GFX card first. More RAM should help too. But really everything is the answer. I had a laptop with very similar specs, so no "component" upgrades were possible, and I went to the whole new rig. Exactly as Harlikwin says. Everything, including the CV1 too. Your rig is already 5 years old any better GPU you will have a bottleneck on CPU. It is all connected and pointless upgrade just one or two things. Bestbuy option will be R5 3600, MSI B450 Tomahawk MBO, 32 Gb 3600 Mhz RAM, RTX 2080S, HP Reverb. The cheapest combination for enormous gain in performance and VR impression compared to your current rig. Just need to close financial construction or rob a bank. The post office is not good enough.

SmoglessPanic Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 I have the same exact question as JG4_Sputnik. I figured I would ask here instead of starting a new thread if that's cool. I would like to get an Occulus Rift S but I won't be able to upgrade my desktop for at least a six months or so. Would I be able to get a decent DCS experience with the specs below? CPU: i7 6700K @4.0 GHz (not overclocked, plan on adding liquid cooling) RAM: 16 GB DDR4 - (plan on upgrading this to 32 GB DDR4 when getting the Rift S) GPU: EVGA 980TI Classified (plan on upgrading to 1080ti but min six months away) MOBO: Gibabyte Z170X-Gaming 7 Windows 10 I've had TrackIR (Version 4) for about 10 years and love it but I think it might be time to join the VR train. I was planning on getting two more 2K monitors for a total of three but that's the same price as a Rift and a few minor upgrades to my desktop. I wanted to see if I could do this until I can save up for either a 1080ti, I plan on building a brand new system but that is at least a year away. I appreciate any insight and thanks.
speed-of-heat Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 I would definitely save for the 1080ti, you might get some extra frames by overclocking you CPU, i'm on Air and stable at 4.6 on my i5. Some additional RAM will also help. but the reality is you will likely need to drop you gfx settings in game to get an acceptable 45FPS the majority of situations. I had a laptop with very similar specs, so no "component" upgrades were possible, and I went to the whole new rig. If you have the $, my answer is this - Open window. Pick up PC case. Drop towards foot. Kick hard towards window. Wave as it goes bye-bye out said window. Purchase 9900k and 2080ti like the rest of us pinheads who spend far too much $ on this hobby. The end. Seriously though - yes, GPU is probably your best bet, by some margin, but I don't think swapping to a faster CPU in that MB/platform will yield all that much of an improved performance either. IMO I agree with others that a 1080ti used is probably the best option bang for buck wise if you want to upgrade anything with that system.
