Someone showed me this today, never seen it before in you tube, terrible. They where apparently practicing for an airshow.

Do they know what went wrong?

Looks very similar to the b-52 accident. Looks like the display was way more aggressive than other displays I have seen of the c-17. How hard is to recover from a stall on a spoiler driven aircraft; is it less effective than regular ailerons?

JPM1,

No, no ejection seats on cargo aircraft, not even the C-2 which is carrier based

Mikoyan,

I don't think is because it has spoiler, the C-17 is fly by wire and very responsive. I believe (I'm not an expert, just my opinion, I don't even have all the facts) the problems was the aggressiveness of the maneuver and how low. Also the size of the aircraft plays a role, there are many fighter aircraft with spoilers.

P.S.

For some reason I did not think about this before, It's not the bank angle, it's how hard the pilot might have been pulling on the stick or how much Alpha was he inducing. That could very easily been cause by high speed stall.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Also the T tail doesn't help. If the AoA is big enough, the turbulent air from the wings will render the Elevator useless. :( RIP to those guys aswell. Sad indeed.

The C-17 is so capable, one of the best demos I have ever seen. Seeing this huge aircraft act like a fighter. And with no cargo, the aircraft can do very aggressive maneuvers. Maybe that played its own role, could have created a sense of overconfidence.

Nice set of pics (On ApacheClips) showing damaged coalition aircraft from 1991 Gulf War.

I'd love to see a documentary detailing each incident.

Edit, just noticed below is a nice description of each event.

I find it inexcusable that accidents like that happen for airshows. Professional custiomers can judge the C-17's abilities without having to be impressed by irrealistic manoevres. And the general public, well I find a normal approach by an aircraft like C-17 already worthwhile seeing.

For flight tests, everyone seems to understand proper preparation and risk management is essential. For airshows, the sky is the limit, but all too often also the ground.

Damn 4 people lost their lives like that, what a sorry event!

Edit: I`m not able to give rep to anyone, don`t know why. Probably the new rep system requires longer distance between rep distribution.
