General overhaul of 5 Croatian MiG-21bis Fishbed L + purchase of additional 5.

 

Croatian Fishbed fleet was made of 12 aircraft (10*bis and 2*UD) in March 2013. Last overhaul and upgrade was done in 2003 in Romania so 10 years later it's time for doing it again. These 5 "new" fighers are to replace 5 Coroatian ones gone FUBAR.

 

Ukraine also upgrades Croatian Mi-8 Hips ATM.

Well it's been debated numerous times here in Croatia however no agreements or contracts signed do far. Various tenders Are in question from SAAB with lease of Gripen up to used turkish and dutch Falcons. Best offer came from Russia with MiG35 as they would also Invest in Croatian factories for spare parts AND overhaul od mig jets. However croatian balls are held by Bruxelles AND NATO stating its not western equipment

During Yugoslavia Years Very close to Zagreb was the largest overhauling plant in EUROPE. Its almost abandoned now with lots od stuff missing. Iraqi floggers Were refurbished here back in 89 . MIG MAPO offered Croatia to reequip the Plant to once again maintain MiG aircraft of european armies. As YOU can see It never happened si Croatia can maintain rest od its fleet in Plants looking quite funny IMO.

Awesome seventies helicopter chase! Reminds me of the book "Low Level Hell" where a newbie Loach scout pilot literally boxed down a Viet Cong into a rise paddy. Then he held him under his skid until his instructor pilot finally caught up running with a heavy flak vest in the muddy field. He got a medal for that before being even checked out to fly the OH-6 by himself.

Thanks for the info. Unpleasant situation for the AF :huh: When pure politics start weighting over actual advantages of said aircraft and supporting infrastructure it usually does more harm than anything.

 

In solidarity, the Brazilian Air Force's been stalling on a Mirage III replacement for over 15 years, and every time the govt. is nearing a decision something waters it down. I know how it feels :D But now that you mentioned it, it surprises me SAAB and Brazil haven't discussed leasing Gripens, since it's the AF's pick anyway and the system's been used by a few other countries.

 

Instead we extended the Mirage III up to 2006, closed the gap with second hand Mirage 2000 which are 'expiring' on the 31st December this year (no more engines, the factory ceased making engines for the C/B versions, and France took all the leftovers for their two-seater fleet) and now we're having 3 F-5EM squadrons scattered in the extreme north, extreme east and extreme south cover 4 airbases including the soon-to-be ex-Mirage airbase which is located in the dead middle of the country by sending two F-5s to do QRA in rotations.
