tflash Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 Russian turbine engines tend to drain excess fuel directly into the exhaust stream, which is what causes the smoke effect. More excess fuel, more smoke. It's just part of the fuel control design. Western engines have excess fuel as well, but it is not just dumped overboard. Of course, this entire process is what makes Western engines so much more expensive. Of course, older Western engines did the same thing. +1 for the info! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

A lot of things make "western" engines more expensive... but fuel return and fuel controllers are not really a primary factor. (Think metallurgy and machining tolerances.)
AlphaOneSix Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 A lot of things make "western" engines more expensive... but fuel return and fuel controllers are not really a primary factor. (Think metallurgy and machining tolerances.) I'm aware of that. I did not mean to imply that efficiency was the primary factor driving cost, although I think you're giving the Russians an unfair shake on machining tolerances and metallurgy. Until someone comes out with ceramic turbines, all engines have very similar heat limits.

AlphaOneSix Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 Can you inject small quantities of fuel into the intake? Some engines have water or alcohol injection systems to cool them off, allowing them to produce more power, but I don't know of any engine that injects fuel into the intake.

Until someone comes out with ceramic turbines, all engines have very similar heat limits. Sure they're better today than they were 30 years ago, but Russian engine technology has always been a few paces behind. When I refer to technologically advanced metallurgy, I'm not referring only to heat limitations, but also to engine life/cycles. (Either way, it was just an example.)

Which I'm sure is why as soon as the Iron curtain came down, NASA started using Russian designed rocket motors on their launch vehicles. (the Germans created the technology of the Saturn 5 , and the Russians that of its successor ... :) ) Cheers.
marcos Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 (edited) Some engines have water or alcohol injection systems to cool them off, allowing them to produce more power, but I don't know of any engine that injects fuel into the intake. I was thinking that adding fuel could cool things down (assuming it doesn't ignite) without interfering with mass-flow rate. The main detriment to thrust at high speed is the rising intake temperature as it reduces compression efficiency and reduces the amount of fuel that can be added prior to the HP turbine.
