Xilon_x Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 the caucasian map is the most complete and most used map in DCS. PROBLEMS: in the list of nations the mission editor lacks nations that are on the current Caucasian map of DCS and are the following in the list: - Armenia - Azerbaijan - Moldova Other problem: I would like the Caucasian map on the TURKISH side to be completed, the city of ISTAMBUL is missing and the Bosphorus strait is missing. 4 major cities are missing to follow clockwise on the map. - Varna. - Odessa. - Mykolaiv. - Sevastopol. a better and more complete Caucasian map would be nice. 1
Northstar98 Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 (edited) Meh, personally I'm more interested in a fully reworked Caucasus map, the current map has quite a few inaccuracies and omissions. The problems mount firstly when you compare the chart seen in MAP compared to SAT. Caucasus is also quite weird in that the further you zoom out, the more detail you see. A few places to note, the list is not exhaustive. Poti - missing airfield, missing port, missing river and Paliastomi Lake has some inaccuracies. Marneuli - missing air base (the main base of the Georgian Air Force). Gelendzhik's runway is on the wrong heading (even if you compare in game, the number and the runway heading are off by 20°) and is the wrong length (irl, it is longer). Gali - Gali Reservoir irl has a hydroelectric dam, and along the artificial(?) river that tracks towards the west coast, there are 3 more hydroelectric stations along it - all absent in DCS, apart from the river. Kurganisnk, Labinsk, Mostovskoy (among others) + the Laba river running between them are all totally absent apart from some roads, the ironic thing is that if you go to the region, go into satellite mode and zoom out you can see all of it. Imgur Album Adding to that the lack of photo-realistic textures (evident when zooming in and out in SAT mode) and overall inaccuracies/omissions. There are some other things like the lack of aircraft warning lights on taller structures (even when marked on the chart in MAP mode), tunnels and bridges having very sudden sharp and steep inclines, as well as non-functional lighthouses. In general I think is to start a completely new map from scratch and as such it should be a paid terrain (maybe keep the free one but not sure how to make it work in MP though...) especially given the massive workload (probably larger than any other map) and size. I think it's best to go for a map centred around 2015, as this was a time when/after a couple of airbases were upgraded. Some of the more major changes to airfields compared to what we see in DCS include: Novorossiysk closed and built on Krymsk has a new apron, slightly lengthened runway and has completely different parking compared to DCS. The RSBN-4 is also in a different place. Gadauta has a lengthened runway as well as different parking; I count 16 hardened shelters, 8 roughly where they are in DCS, but laid out differently and another 8 on it's north-eastern corner, alongside some new hangars(?). It also has a longer apron west of the runway). Mozdok has another parallel runway to the north, but otherwise largely the same (apart from a RADAR covered by a radome in the south-western parking area). Sochi doesn't have any hardened shelters (which are on a river IRL) and is exclusively civil (AFAIK), there is a large apron in between the 2 runways and parallel to runway 06-24. A little further on to the north-east from runway 02-20, there's also a small heliport and a VOR. Runway 02 is also ILS equipped (not just runway 06). Maykop-Khanskaya doesn't have any parking facilities right of runway 05, instead it has 4 aprons to it's left and no hardened shelters. Senaki has a large staff(?) facility immediately to the north. Again, a non exhaustive list, it should still be suitable for the Russia-Georgia war of 2008. A few other things I'd personally wish for if this were to be considered are: Photo-realistic textures Maybe slight increase in resolution if possible Updated towns and cities Corrected rivers (width, colour and banks) Accurate (but low resolution) depth map for the Black Sea and Sea of Asov. If you were to extend it, there's always Crimea (which has been wished for plenty of times before), Chechnya (current map just misses it). The map has plenty of potential wherever you go. They wouldn't, the treaty governing the straits prohibit nuclear powered anything from entering, they don't even allow pure aircraft carriers to my knowledge. I don't know what would happen during war time but the main conflict in the area to my knowledge is the Russo-Georgian war, and the more recent conflict in Crimea, neither involved direct military intervention from NATO... Caucasus map can´t expand meanwhile ED dont build a new map technology or a "Whole World map". Meanwhile, Krimea and Ucrania has a political problem on russia, talked by ED in the past, and other caucasus countries as Chechenia, Armenia, Azerbaiyán and other have in the same situations. Turkey has not enter into ED plans. ebabil Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 Stretching this map to Istanbul is impossible for ED I guess. It would require several terabytes of space if they do it. But for sure Blacksea map needs some love. * They can add al least one airfield to Turkey's side, so that mission scenarios can be enriched like starting an assault from Turkey etc. Simply by adding a single airfield, it means you add a whole country to the war * They can make very small part of the map like a single city very detailed so chopper pilots can enjoy low and slow flights like the center of Dubai or Vegas. Xilon_x Posted May 9, 2020 Author Posted May 9, 2020 see the Black Sea without an entrance door and how to see a pipe full of water but without a tap. in DCS the black sea looks like a large lake not a sea. I don't ask BIG RESOURCES I ASK to do only the TAP that is the BOSFORO strait.
Xilon_x Posted May 9, 2020 Author Posted May 9, 2020 (edited) if you then say that it takes a lot of resources, then at this point I would make you a different proposal. at this point I would prefer that you take the current map of the caucasus in dcs and delete it in half because the other half is unusable and you would save many more megabites and also delete the part of Chechenia. The_Dan Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 I usually think "then make it by yourself" is a bad argument as you don't have to be a movie maker to criticize movies and so on. But more and more people on this forums shou at ED that "it's not a big deal" to make certain things. So if you don't ask for "big resources" become a third party and make this by yourself as an map extension. ED seems open to 3rd party ideas so try it! To get to the topic, i would rather like to see some improvements to the major cities in the area like Batumi and Tiflisi as they are currently only put together by the standard tiles. There could be some PG like improvements where some buildings in the cities are hand modeled. 1
