Hi all, apologies if this is wrong place to post but I am thinking of getting a warthog throttle and joystick controller and I want to know whether they are worth the cost if I'm using VR??

Just go an ordinary joystick at the moment and can't afford monitor upgrade and the Warthog so would like your opinion guys.

Cheers

I haven't tried VR yet. But I can tell that I also never look at my Warthog throttle when using it, no issue to find the correct switch/button. But I guess that come with experience.

I would consider them separate issues and not really related.

In general you really need the buttons on the real aircraft's HOTAS (and other handy controllers like the radar controls on the F-5, Viggen or F-14 RIO) to be within your finger's reach on your real life controller.

I think VR is a major improvement to the game no matter what controller you use. I would argue a HOTAS with lots of buttons is more necessary with VR because you're effectively blind to the outside world so finding the right key on the keyboard is that much harder.

I think the Warthog is the best controller I've ever used, but your mileage and budget may vary. Depending on the airplane you fly a controller with fewer buttons might be usable in VR.

I will say, that while the Warthog is wonderful in DCS World, other flight games like Elite: Dangerous I found the switches on the throttle less useful because they don't map properly as button presses so I ended up with fewer usable controls on the throttle. YMMV, depending on what else you play.

I agree. You can do everything on the warthog just by feel. Transitioning to the keyboard is difficult and breaks immersion. One more thing: Using the HOTAS is also much easier than clicking the cockpit in VR for many things.

Yeah, really essential to have good hotas with VR. I use the warthog throttle switches for essential things that I need in the game, like NVG's, flaps, gear, knee board etc. It is a waste to use them for things that you can do with the mouse like APU's and engine start. I have tried the A-10C but don't own it, I did have an issue with this as the key bindings are all premapped to their labelled locations and it left me using the mouse for the gear handle - not good. So I would have to remap away from these if I was using it long term. The key with VR is to get away from the keyboard. I use the space bar as pause and can usually find the esc key. Try to do everything via the clickable cockpits. Not sure I could use FC3 aircraft in VR. Haven't used these since my monitor days.

Get a Warthog and pointctrl, if you don't have the cash get an x56 and pointctrl.

Get rid of the keyboard and the mouse for full immersion.
