BarTzi Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 (edited) I don't know if it's a setup thing, or if it's me and I should get used to it, but I can't spot the rundown of the supercarrier on time without excessively zooming in. I find it just not bright enough to spot at 1.2 nm abeam in DCS. With that being said- I have a few questions: 1. Do you spot it easily? What's your gamma set to and what monitor are you using? 2. If you can't spot it, do you use another visual reference instead? 3. Naval aviators of the forums - during deployment, the deck will eventually not stay as clean. Is there a requirement to keep the rundown cleaner than the rest of the deck?* (asking because of this picture) What do you think about the texture of the deck and the contrast between the rundown and the deck texture? Should the rundown be more white instead of gray? *Some of it probably has to do with the fact that planes don't land or taxi near that spot, but I just want to make sure. I'm not a pilot, I was a Flight Deck Director and a Crash and Salvage guy. It's actually called the Round down. The deck gets really jacked up on deployment from the fuel spills, oil, and all other lubricants. The gritty paint on deck is called non-skid. It gets worn a lot and in certain places, more than others. I've peeled it up on deployment because we got a bad batch. We have a cleaning plan for the deck that the FOD TEAM handles. They have a daily scrub plan. They also have a machine called a scrubby. It sucks out the padeyes and gets up the big spills. The Landing area has a different type of non-skid due to the impact on the A/C tires there. The LA gets really worn. I've actually had to paint the deck on deployment because the paint begins to fade. The pics you see of various carriers will always vary because there are so many factors involved in the way the deck is operating at that time. I hope that helps. DO it or Don't, but don't cry about it. Real men don't cry!

That helped a lot, thank you for posting. I didn't want to do it at first, but I might have to make it brighter just on my end.
BarTzi Posted July 9, 2020 Author Posted July 9, 2020 Use the lineup light? I'm talking about CASE I. Trying to visually spot the round down so I can tell when to start turning towards the carrier.

I fly in VR and my technique is to look over my left wing and when i see the full white line of the Round Down, normally when the distance is 1.2 from the Tacan i start to turn. A little after i´m abeam from the start of the deck. I use VR zoom too look at the Round Down when i´m abeam from the carrier course line. Some say that start the turn to the 90 when Abeam from the Paddles. Don´t if it will help you somehow but it´s my way of doing it. As reference i use the tip of my Sidewinder for example. I tried many times the different turning start distances to see were was my bestl position to start turning. Give feedback please. Best wishes from Lisbon, Portugal. F.
