GR00VYJERRY Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 Which version does everyone run? I am on stable at the moment. Been on it since I started dcs. I want to start looking to play some online stuff and going some of those servers. It looks like most run on open beta. Does open beta run pretty smoothly or is it full of game breaking bugs? If so, I suppose I’d rather stay in stable. If I switch versions (I am on steam), does it reset my settings or are all of my controls saved? Thanks

A lot will depend on what you fly. There are moduals that still are in the gestation phase, and open beta allows you to get additional goodies faster. I don't fly multiplayer much so can't speak to that, but single player for me has been fine in open beta and I've never had a reason to change.
GR00VYJERRY Posted July 23, 2020 Author Posted July 23, 2020 I fly all the warbirds available and fly the f16 and f18.
Taz1004 Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 Stable has bugs too. I believe it had the suicidal wingman? F16 and F18 are basically unfinished work in progress themselves. They're still unfinished work in progress regardless of they're in OB or Stable. At least it'll be further in the progress in Open Beta. But Open Beta has its own issues such as lighting issues. I'm on Open Beta but contemplating on going back to Stable. Better Smoke - Better Trees Caucasus - Better Trees Syria - Better Trees Mariana - Clear Canopy Glass
Ramsay Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 Which version does everyone run? It varies, most people I know run Open Beta but roll back to Stable if/when there are major issues. Does open beta run pretty smoothly or is it full of game breaking bugs? If so, I suppose I’d rather stay in stable. It's pretty smooth ATM but there's always a chance the next patch will break/fix something i.e. three steps forward/one step back. Now that the "release" branch is on 2.5.6, there isn't much reason not to switch to Open Beta. If I switch versions (I am on steam), does it reset my settings or are all of my controls saved? Your control settings are saved, switching between Release/Open Beta on steam keeps the same "Saved Games\DCS" folder and profiles/config. • Steam Library -> DCS World Steam Edition -> Properties \ Betas = "openbeta - Public beta versions" ... will update your install to the current Open Beta, if you decide to make the switch. i9 9900K @4.8GHz, 64GB DDR4, RTX4070 12GB, 1+2TB NVMe, 6+4TB HD, 4+1TB SSD, Winwing Orion 2 F-15EX Throttle + F-16EX Stick, TPR Pedals, TIR5, Win 11 Pro x64, Odyssey G93SC 5120X1440
GR00VYJERRY Posted July 23, 2020 Author Posted July 23, 2020 I will probably just switch it since it seems easy to bounce back and forth between the versions on steam. I see no reason not to try right now.
reece146 Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 Run both. I preferentially run Stable, create missions and such there, unless there is a module that is not available (e.g. Channel Map, Supercarrier).
kengou Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 I’ve had very few problems on beta since I started many years ago. Occasionally a big bug hits, but then I just don’t update until it gets fixed. And besides beta gets fixes first as well as new features and modules. GR00VYJERRY Posted July 23, 2020 Author Posted July 23, 2020 How do you run both? With the steam version I just select open beta and switches over and I go select current version it just click that and it will that up after I restart.

Probably one of the downsides to running a Steam version of DCS. You cant run both
