According to JUTARNJI LIST, the Ministry of defense has formally invited the US, Russian, Swedish and French fighter aircraft manufacturers to bid for the projected purchase of 12 aircraft for the Croatian Air Force.

Offers are expected by the end of March 2008. The Ministry is apparently opened to the alternative of procuring used aircraft, too. So, the choice is now among the F-16, JAS 39 Gripen, MiG 29 M2 and Mirage F1.

Offers:

Dassault - Mirage F-1 (second-hand)

Dassault - Mirage 2000-5

EADS - Eurofighter Typhoon

IAI - F-16 (second-hand)

Russia - MiG-29M

SAAB - JAS-39 Gripen

Lockheed-Martin - F-16

In my opinion win Gripen :)

Give me "flying telephone pole" (SA-2)!

Mirage F-1 is a bit too dated and 2 generations behind the other offers.

As I can see it the only real option is the Gripen. Small plane for small country and small price tags as well. But oh boy it does have fire power...

Czech republic in 2002 turned down its earlier plans to buy 24 Jas-39 for 1.6 billion $, excluding weapons. That's 67 million (2002)bucks per plane - it doesn't look like a really small price in this case. And F-16's price is near to that value too.

I think it also depends in how much does it cost to maintain. Why buys an aircraft you can not keep flying. How much are parts? How often does it brake? Where can I find the parts? and so on.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..

Because before anything else, there's politics, I think Hajduk is right - They will buy used F-16's.

I also think Falcons, sad :(

On April 6th George Jr. is visiting Zagreb, Croatia and our president and goverment.

Main reason of his visit was never announced by local media here in Croatia but I assume negotiation on joining NATO as discussed today (April 4th) in Bucharest, Romania. Perhaps F-16s is our entry point, I'm sure it is!

Personally I'd like to see MiG-29, we used MiG-21 since the birth of our country (bought from Ukraine or stolen from YuAF) and our pilots and ground personel are better prepared to meet Russian hardware one more time. And BTW it's best bang for buck!

Russia also owes Croatia some money, part of this debt was settled with delivery of two Mil-171 two months ago and we received two An-32 few years ago. But that's peanuts, We could also work this debt out by having free gas from Dimitriy Medvedov (former head of Gazprom).

Now I'm not sure for how long can Poland, Bulgaria and Romania use it's Fulcrums and other Warsaw pact equipment, now being a NATO participants I'm sure there's a agreed deadline in transition from eastern hardware to western one. Same thing probably applies here with Croatia joining NATO but not too many Croats know that nor they care.

@mvsgas - it's not only spare parts, maintenance, endurance and quality. I mean it should be if you think straight like we do but not here in Croatia, oh no!

You all must know that Croatia isn't purchasing these aircraft to patrol it's skies. For that matter we can use Pilatus PC-9M that does the trick very well considering the size and shape of our airspace. Croatia's need for any new aircraft is blackmail or nothing but scratching someone's back and expecting the same in return. Most of the competitions here in Croatia are decided by thickness of the envelope handed under table.

Croatian Airforce has no money for funding flights of 4 airworthy Fishbeds, we have 24 Fishbed airframes in total including 4 Mongols, so any new planes will probably be used for static display of our progress.

Static progress!

^^^^

I said it's sad.

I haven't heard of IAI option for F-16, CroAF during last year and a half is considering an offer from Netherlands to purchase 10 of their Fokker F-16A and 2 F-16B Block 15 OCU. These airframes are supposed to be upgraded to F100 Pee Wees and Hazeltine AN/APX-111 IFF, if not by Dutch, by Lockheed.

But now that you mentioned IAI, I wouldn't mind Sufa :)

Another thing to mention is an offer from Dasault. Rafale B and C along with F1 are on the table.

I think they buy F-16. Politics are distributing cards. Everywhere.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

Boberro, since you're from Poland I can agree a Team Speak session with Croatian MoD so you can mention all downfalls of F-16.

LOL!

P.S.

You should consider yourself lucky, you received BLK52.

Romania is buying 48 F-16 for 4,5$ bln.

http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htproc/articles/20080525.aspx

May 25, 2008: Romania is buying 48 U.S. F-16 fighters for $4.5 billion. Half will be the latest model, the F-16C /50. The others will be used, and reconditioned to F-16C/25 standards.

F-16s are still produced for export, and these cost as much as $70 million each (the F-16I for Israel). ...A used F-16C, built in the 1990s, would go for about $10 million on the open market.

In addition to recondition of used planes, I guess there would be equipment, training and weapons too, and all of the things make the average price for the plane near 94$ mln.

F-16's position in Europe is strong, despite its price.
