I repeat, why is the thread about the performance of the AMRAAM closed? The last post is a warning to keep it on topic. The apparent trouble maker in that thread was banned. Why is it closed?

Wrong missile; the one you're thinking of (And Yefim got wrong) is the R-74, with the M-80ME seeker IIRC. Off-bore unconfirmed but it may well be a CCD seeker with 90 deg off-bore.

I wish I could find out who the seeker manufacturer is.

BUMP for this question too.

I was going to ask a question in that thread yesterday and it was locked before I could post. I'm guessing they took a common forum policy I've seen many times before: you close a thread that got a member banned. But I was all ready and rarin' to get the thread back on topic!

:blink:I don't want to sound gullible but, I guess I am. Is that really how they test the seeker on a R-73?

Why not? A friend of mine used to work on anti-ship missiles years ago. One of them had both a radar and IR seeker. When they were running tests, they would check the IR seeker was working by walking around the lab with a soldering iron. :)

Yeah... you can see something like that in the MiG-35 development video.. :)

Well, maybe here's why not. Chances are that the soldering iron was hotter than a cigarette (possibly much, much hotter) and I doubt the lab provided for distances of 300 meters from the seeker. This is not necessarily proof of anything other than the two tests could be quite different.

I should mention that the 300m figure is me remembering what someone said that he was remembering someone said to him :) So, it's somewhere in the 100-500 range :D

But the principle stays.

I remember having NVG during my military training, I could spot a group of 3 men sharing a ciggie...or whatever it was cca 3 km away on top of the skyscraper!

LOL!

'scuse me but who was banned?! I didn't follow that topic too much!

Oooh, I see it was Roko!

If the cigarette is glowing to the naked eye - ie giving off visible red light, and the soldering iron is not glowing to the naked eye - hot but only giving off IR, the cigarette is hotter than the soldering iron. Something giving off yellow light would be hotter again.

What the soldering iron might be doing is giving of more heat, but that's a different thing to being hotter.

Cheers.

Oh btw here is a pic of the "Cessna-EOS" I was talking about earlier :)

That's a much bigger aperture than a missile seeker you know. And it does make a difference :P

yes my point exactly.

With this sized equipment and the lesser G-strains on the system,

you can make it's efficiency much better.

Wow. When you were talking about that, I imagined some thing sticking out of the door of a C172 :D This is impressive :)

And look how it's painted in a nice non-reflective color around it, just like on the MiG-29. Always wondered why that isn't the case on Su-27

Yes, and then your MiGs had problems with the EOS and the nose is now being repainted to a darker and less reflective color. :)

Oh boy, launch range in front hemisphere 40KM. So the seeker can actually lock the target at 40KM range in front hemisphere.

It's just kinematic range when launched high and fast ... it means nothing about the seeker's ability to lock on.

So if the plane is closer than the min-range, 0.3km, the seeker can't see it? ;) That's the kind of logic that was used for the max range here.

Additionally, we know that R-27ET despite having a huge range, can certainly not lock on at a truly significant portion of that range to its target. Same deal.

The one exception is an unusualy hot/bright target.

LOL:doh:

My mission is to fly, fight, and win. o-:|:-o What I do is sometimes get a tin of soup, heat it up, poach an egg in it, serve that with a pork pie sausage roll.
