Flyby Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 This is a poll about monitors. What screen size do you own? 19 inch 20 inch 22 inch 24 inch 26 inch 30 inch Please also share your brand, model number, game resolution, (gtg response time is extra) and video card in your answer. How does your monitor perform for you in combat flight sims? The poll is simple, but what performances are important to you in selecting a monitor? Sorry if this is too much detail to ask for. thanks you. Flyby out The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
RedTiger Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Monitor: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8739118&st=LG+monitor&lp=3&type=product&cp=1&id=1201913867539 Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130325 I use 1650 x 1080 resolution. As for performance, I couldn't as for anything better. The only downsides, and really mean only -- I'm reaching here -- is that the thing is a pain to keep clean without some sort of liquid cleaner. It attracts dust and grime that a cloth will only move aside, not actually pick up. Also, the stand is a little goofy in quality compared to the monitor itself. Other than this, its perfect. It has a nice glossy screen, which is the first time I've seen a glossy LCD, but doesn't pick up any glare when playing games. :)
X-man Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I use a Samsung SyncMaster 204B, 20inch with 1600x1200 (also in-game). Works very good and response is good as well I guess :) 1 64th Aggressor Squadron Discord: 64th Aggressor Squadron TS: 135.181.115.54
Aeroscout Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009094 Its contrast ratio could be better, but it's more than large enough for me, especially since I just upgraded from a 17". I run it at 1680x1050. Pilotasso Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Fujitsu Siemens Scaleoview 19" 12ms. 3 years old. It has served me so well that I havent found an excuse to swap it for a newer and bigger one. .
Talon Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 (edited) 37" 1080P widescreen (Westinghouse LVM 37w3, monitor, not a TV). Once you go to a large 37" to 42" screen in LockOn, you'll never look back!! Westinghouse 1080P LVM 37w3 1920x1080 resolution straight thru the DVI connector into a DVI connector on the Westinghouse monitor (digital to digital connection). Awesome color and performance, better than the high-end 19 and 21" lcds and CRTs I have had (not the cheap versions either). LockOn performance is A++++ I would highly recommend it to anyone. Colors are brilliant, Blacks are awesome if you play games like COD4 that use alot of shadows, etc... I have run this screen with a single Nvidia Geforce 7950, and also with dual 7950's in SLI, and currently with an EVGA 8800 GTKO video card. On its way to me now is one of the new Nvidia GTX 280's and I'll report back later. Performance has been flawless and without problems. Note: I recommend if you have a flat screen, for cleaning, to go to your local sunglass hut or optical store, and buy their spray cleaner for expensive glasses. Works like a charm, and I have been using it on my laptops screens, LCDs, 1080P monitor and HDTV for over a year now without issue. Leaves no streaks, marks or residue when wiped with a clean soft cloth. http://www.westinghousedigital.com/details.aspx?itemnum=56 :thumbup: Edited July 18, 2008 by Talon [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Flyby Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 great responses thanks for the replies, guys. I see there are some really large screens out there, but so far mostly the monitors are below 24 inches. most importantly to me is the resolutions being run. I did not see anyone running 2600x. I've been reading about the new uber GPUs: 4870X2, and GTX-280. Very powerful, but very expensive. I can see where they are best used at very high resolutions. Your responses indicate to me that such cards may be overkill. Also, if you guys have stressed anything, it's that combat flight sims such as LO/FC are primarily cpu-bound, at least since the last two generations of GPUs. I suspect that even when Black Shark comes out it will require more so a fast cpu, at least a dual core. Anyone with a decent video card from the last two generations might be in good shape otherwise. Perhaps a 9800GTX might even be a bit overkill with a fast (near a 3.0ghz) modern processor, Conroe or Penryn. Interesting results... thanks guys Flyby The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.

RedTiger Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 I can tell you that I've run LOMAC on a VERY old Geforce 3 64MB card! Other than the lack of some advanced shaders, the actual picture quality was the same as my 8800GTS. I'd go for the newest dual core processor family (I don't even think a quad core is worth it). Once you get your processor picked out, I'd build the rest of your system around that with the intent of possibly overclocking.
Pilotasso Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Actualy there was a huge leap of quality form those old g force cards. I had a Ti4200 card when I first had LOMAC. It was replaced by an ATI 9800 (64Mb) and now the 8800GTS and both wgot me a huge leap in image quality. back in the day ATI had better image quality, and then with the 8 series NVIDIA caught up. I noticed the most on texture crispness. Runways were blurry in the distance with the TI4200 and every sine I trade it over I can see crisp texture much farther away. .

Flyby Posted July 19, 2008 Author Posted July 19, 2008 the base of my build plan Red Tiger, I certainly plan to build my system around the processor. Also I plan to select my video card based in part on my monitor selection. Whateevr the native resolution of that monitor, I intend to buy a gpu that will handle the next highest resolution easily, just in case someone sends me a stack of $100.00 bills about ya----------------------------------------------------------thick! Then I could buy a larger monitor! :D Also I've read at various places that running a resolution lower than the native rez of the monitor can cause lag in some models. There appear to be a few where this lag is minimal. I guess it's best to find a really good technical review of any monitor befreo buying. Thanks to all who have taken the poll so far. Especially thanks for the additional comments about your monitors. I hope others can learn something from your comments like I am. ;) Flyby out The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
eurofor Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Samsung 226BW 22" 2ms 1680x1050 plugged into a 8800GTS. Pretty cheap monitor but it's really good. Next time I'll probably go for something bigger though. I've gotten used to 22" and now it feels small. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
hitman Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Samsung Syncmaster 220wm with 3ms response time, 1000-1 ratio, and onboard speakers that I never use. No glare, just a nice looking monitor that wasnt too terribly expensive.
