Target lock with HMCS - target designation box keeps falling behind target, losing lock

Using the HMCS in DGFT mode to lock targets is difficult and unpredictable at the moment.

When I try to lock up a target by pressing TMS up, the target designation box falls behind, and continues to fall behind until the (invalid) lock is finally dropped anyway.

I have uploaded a video, where you can clearly see that the HMCS egg is pointing perfectly on and around the target, but the radar does not manage to create a stable lock.

This was a multiplayer match. I must confess I am not really sure if it happens in single player too. I will have to try it out.

But this is really annyoing in a MP match. It happens 50 % of the time that I can't get a stable lock for firing missiles or getting a guns track solution calculated.

Is it a bug or am I doing something wrong here?

Seen it a lot in the last few weeks, don’t know why. I don’t believe it is operator error.

Been like that since day one of that mode for me too. 

 

I try to TMS Up over and over (and over and over and over) until the box finally squares over the bandit.  Can be really challenging when its hard to see the bandit and you start chasing the box instead.   

 

As SCPanda said, sometimes I just have to TMS Down, pull the nose and use the HUD boresite to finally get a valid lock/tracking. 

 

I've never seen that happen in the F18... I don't think this is an operator error, or "by design" of the radar....  I'd assume this is already well documented in the bugs section and part of the "continued work on AA radar"...

Could you also use Vertical Scan mode?

Boresight is faster. Vertical scan mode is slow and sometimes does not even lock the target.

This happens in single player also. I fix it using TMS aft to break lock and then TMS fwd again to lock with the HMCS. Usually fixes it on the first re-lock.

Does not work for me. I hope ED has it on the bug list.

This is a major disadvantage if I want to use the radar gun sight because every re-lock takes time, and the level 5 gunsight pipper needs to be calculated again showing up too late for a gun shot then.

I agree darkman222, but we also have a boresite and funnel that do not need radar...

 

Usually the locking issue is high aspect related and in that case, just go for broke, dont worry about the overshoot, and just fill your hud with their plane, trigger down, and you'll hit 🙂

 

I swear I think the bug may be that its locking where the shadow of the plane is...

I need reliable radar lock because I need the EGGS level 5 radar gun sight. I don't fly around on a dogfight server against other 4th gen aircraft using the funnel like a WW2 plane.

As this is apparently a bug, will a moderator move it in the bug section or do I have to repost there?

Create a short track with no mods showing the discrepancy and post in the bugs section.
