It would be helpful to be able to change the label type in flight.

That is, change from Dots to Short or Full labels.

We can currently only turn them on and off during flight.

Why? Labels are handy to highlight units due to our display limitations. Large labels quickly clutter the display.

I'd like to use Dots and sometimes change to full labels, or for some missions, text labels and switch to dots if too cluttered.

Toggling labels off is helpful, but switching text to dots would be especially nice when there are clusters of units in view with low contrast.

Currently we have:

1) Options -> Gameplay -> Labels
None, Full, Abbreviated, Dot Only

2) In game toggle labels for:
All, Aircraft, Missile, Vehicle & Ship.

Either a bind-able action to cycle label style, or exposing some of the Gameplay options during flight would be great.

Dunno if a dynamic solution might be better for the clustering issue?

Under 5km away, full label becomes a dot?

Right, good ideas. There are multiple reasons why the text labels are an issue and clustering is a major one.

Hopefully the devs can consider various solutions. The text labels become almost unreadable when clustered, yet they often are.

Handing it back to the user to cycle between label types is quick solution that could be easy to implement.

The in flight options @Mike_Romeo mentions only toggle On/Off, which is useful but inadequate. They could be extended to cycle, or add additional Actions like LCtrl + LShift + F10 cycle All Label modes.

I would also love to have the labels turned off at start, but be able to turn them on if I want to.

You can turn labels off and on through a keybind mid flight.

Yes, I know, and I do that. But I would like them to be off when I start the mission, and for whatever reason be able to turn on midflight. Is that possible?

Yes.  If you have all labels on by default, and you hit LSHIFT F10 or whatever button/key you have it bound to at the final briefing screen in the cockpit before the mission begins the labels will be off when you start.

Aha. Well, that's not off by default in my book. I want them to be off by default, without having to press anything. But thanks for your help!

It seems the default labels on/off action has now been changed to cycling through the different kinds of labels. Is there any way to assign a keybind to just on/off again? The new way involves a lot more button clicking to just pop the labels on / off when you need to get a quick visual orientation.

A second question - has anyone figured out how the ranges for the neutral dot labels work? The file has references to hundred percent and five percent (I think) but I couldn't make much sense of the numbers during a very cursory look at it.

@wowbaggerYou're right, there is new behavior, cycling instead of toggling.

I think this is kind of an improvement but I wish:

1) There was separately bindable Cycle vs Toggle actions.

2) For this, and any similar setting, I wish there was a text log or visual indication of what changed.  Depending on what units are on screen and at what distance, it's difficult to tell what mode is currently selected.
