Ok, I know we go around and around about specs...but hear me out.

I'm one the brink of buying a new machine. I've been out of the loop on hardware for a couple years (deployed to Afghanistan). I know I can do my homework blah blah blah...but you guys see the sim everyday versus your hardware. Spec a machine for me...what is it going to take to run DCS.BS. Nothing official and nothing anyone is going to hold you too...I want the bells and whistles. I want smooth frames and decent resolution.

Processor?

RAM,Type?

VidCard, Type?

I just read a great idea in an earlier post about spending my time waiting for BS to release by flying X-plane. I haven't flown a helicopter sim since Janes LB2. If I can go ahead and get comfortable flying again, then I can concentrate on learning the systems instead of having to do both when the sim is released. Any help would be great.

Wait for an official spec release; but in general anything you buy now that's 'mid/high-level' even should run BS relatively well.

Not a Beta Guy, but............Purchase the fastest Processor you can afford and build your system around that..........LockOn and as a consequence - Black Shark - remains crippled by the CPU bottleneck.

But in those Procedures notes are almost empty. Few units and unkown graphics setings. Then prepare big mission and all will be flawed like Lock on I guess.

Just buy top of the line everything and you wont have a problem. you dont need wory about multy cores as BS is tied to a singel core. So with that in mined do what I did and buy a CPU with high Mh (just 2x core) and a motherboard capable of taking quad cores for whin DCS starts to suport them. that will save some money now to buy a beter CPU latter or a second GFx card (SLI/Crossfire). What I have shuld run BS just fine.

Asked differently, is there any material to avoid for the Graphic cards for example ?

Sundown,

I have no affiliation with ED/DCS whatsoever but I very recently did a lot of research on a new high(ish) end system. What I ended up with was:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 (overclocks easily to 3.6GHz on air)

Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (Will handle Crossfire if I decide to go multi-gpu. Also has amazing overclocking options)

Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x2GB) with Airflow Fan (High performance and rock solid stability)

ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 (More affordable than the NVIDIA 280 line and have the option of adding a second in the future)

If you're not concerned with quad core (I was as I also play a lot of FSX) the Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 is the processor of choice right now. I hope this provides you with at least a starting point.

There is no sense in upgrading your system for a game that we're still not 100% sure when it will arrive. I would save my money and wait till the time arrives and by then you will be able to get far better hardware for lower price. Even if the waiting means only 6 months, the way technology is moving it is all outdated by the time it ships to your home.

BTW what kind of hardware do you currently have? When the time comes I would go with a high clocking dual core like the E8600 which has been overclocking madly. Hopefully it will come down in price when Nehalen arrives :D

My computer is almost exactly the same as his, mine is actually a bit better. I can tell you that a mission of similar size in the Su-25T does not run that smoothly all the time, this is with most things on high but a few tweaks to the clipping settings.

They've done something, some sort of optimization. I can't believe anything otherwise... The smoothness of that video is very apparent when you compare it with the previous ones. Wags said that he was using the same machine he used in the last ones. LOMAC still has issues here and there; every other new game you can think of, save one, can't even begin to tax my system. Crysis only starts to chug in later levels when I use little config file cheat and run it at Very High settings. Flight sims are different animal, but Black Shark looks like it might have some of this under control!!

SunDown, if you can wait, conventional wisdom says that this is always better. I openly and gleefully defy conventional wisdom and give you my official response: a combination of GGTharos's, 159_Viper, and CAT_101st ideas. Buy something that runs LOMAC well, pick high-end and high quality components, and consider your processor as the most important part of your rig for Black Shark. If you're building it yourself...plan ahead with Mobo and cooling selections that will allow overclocking in the future.

Believe me, fraps will need much more ressources then AI Units.

If it runs smoothly with fraps, then it will run at minimum the same fps rate with Units (without fraps)

edit: Wait as long as you can with buying a CPU. Intel and AMD will bring out new CPU Socket's(AMD-AM3/Intel-LGA1366) for their new CPU's 04/2008 - 01/2009. Which means, that they will no longer compatible with current ones(AMD-AM2+/Intel-775). If you then want to buy a new CPU in 2009, you have to buy a new Motherboard....wasted money. But if you have the money, go buy it

A new CPU Architecture will(always) bring more performance (even on a single core). So better wait for the new CPU's.

The best thing you can do is to wait until you actually have the game and can try it on your old rig, then you can get a better idea of what you need and can really appreciate the difference after you install it on your new PC.

If the game only runs on a singel core. Would it not be smart to put FRAPs to run solly on the 2nd + cores. That would prevent any drag on the game whin using Fraps other than the FPS when capturing. This is where the Vid card is more important than the CPU.
