Sorry I'm new to DCS and not very experienced with forums but I have noticed this I think error.  Simple mission, single player F / A-18C Hornet 30000ft vs TU 160 30000ft hot.  All good until I block the target that goes from 39 miles to 99.9

Means no range information, which is typically seen when the target is jamming.

Both of the above answers are correct.

As you have said you are new to DCS, I'll try to expand on the answer (as I understand it).

When you lock an enemy target in STT it gets a warning indicating its been locked. It responds by jamming your signal if the distance between you is large. Your radar receiver is then unable to determine the distance because the return signal is "corrupted". It can however determine the direction of where the signal is coming from. This is why your radar indicates a 99.9 range to target.

As you get closer to the target, your radar will "burn through" the jamming signal and you will again re-acquire the distance information and therefore the target.

It doesn't necessarily require that you STT someone, any jamming contact that your radar cannot resolve the range for, will be displayed as an AOT. It's just that in DCS, depending on the module and its jammer implementation or whether you're flying against AI or humans, the jammer may come online when you attempt to STT them.

Yes...you are quite right. You can turn a jammer on anytime and if the target is at a distance it wont be able to get range information.

However I was trying to explain the scenario that Hornet 64 presented which was that when he locked the target with STT the range indication changed to 99.9

Yeah, fair enough. I just took the opportunity to add some info to the conversation. :)
