Absolutely! Given that the 2.7 weather engine is still being worked on as well I hope that the FLIR and weather improvements in tandem will lead to an awesome rendition of optical systems where you actually have to struggle sometimes. And I am not talking about lack of contrast on the CCD circuit below clouds or stuff 😄

Yup exactly this

1967, Rolling Thunder, Hanoi steel plant attack. While not a pod, just consider the magnification details.

The Hornet is best at killing things on the ground. Now, if we could just get a GAU-8 in the nose next to the AN/APG-65, a titanium tub around the pilot, and a couple of J-58 engines in the tail...

It does depend on a lot of factors. But our ingame rendition suffers no quality loss at all. Literally none, as of yet. While we may disagree on the details, I kinda can't believe that doesnt strike you as odd.

Au contraire, it does suffer especially on the FLIR video. Simply switch from CCD to FLIR on the A-10C's Litening II. The resolution difference on the ATFLIR vs Litening is definitely modeled. What we don't have is blooming/background noise (ground being hot/cold) that influences how "sharp"/detailed the picture is, in real life.

CCD is too "clean" at larger distance, FLIR is more dependent on the environment temperatures. The thing is we need more/better temperature representation.

Didn't fly the A-10 in ages, so I'm certainly just giving you the benefit of doubt here. Let me rephrase it: in the totality of the TGP modeling the ingame rendition is overperforming since a lot of factors are not modeled (deeply enough), a lot of which have been mentioned in this thread.

Again I will say: I hope the weather and FLIR reworks will improve on all of that.

FLIR is absolutely degraded by humidity/moisture in the air, one of the major issues with it in a great many applications. Like you can see some great videos from "deserts" but it will look totally different in a humid costal environment. And yes, thermal contrast is a major issue as well and it varies quite a bit during the day. In general FLIR is used at night since thats when you tend to have good thermal contrast conditions. None of this is currently modeled in DCS.

And while only 1 paramater in the system, it is a limiting one in terms of resolution. The FLIR sensor plates

Litening II 320x256

Litening ER 640x512

ATFLIR 640x512

Litening G4 (raz) 1024x1024eye

Of course you also have the effect of the optics which also varies between pods, and then advances in image processing.

We do. At least the symbology.

We do, in the Harrier. Well, it's the G4 only by name, a lot of the options aren't implemented, they don't do anything.

The vCVW-17 is looking for Hornet and Tomcat pilots and RIOs. Join the vCVW-17 Discord.

I want SWIR as part of the flir model, but I doubt we get it. Hell, I'll be happy if the model MWIR vs LWIR.
