Recently, I was discussing the NCTR capability of the APG-68v5 with a few buddies while flying on GS's server and if we will ever see it for the APG-68v5 which we have in game. So, as this feature is currently missing in "our" DCS F-16C I would like to politely ask you ED guys if NCTR  is actually planned for the simulated Block version which we have in DCS? Question goes directly to BN, 9L or Matt. Can you please ask the team if this is a feature which is plannend for a future update? Thx in advance. 😉😎

What is NCTR capability? Can you explain in simple words?

Non-Cooperative Target Recognition (NCTR). NCTR function allows aircraft type identification under certain parameters.

The F-16C should have this. Aircraft related data can be shown on a air to air track when you press the expand button on the fcr page, including air to air PPLI tracks.

NCTR is Non Cooperative Target Recognition, it’s a technology that allows a radar to identify the aircraft it is looking at purely from its radar return, and thus hopefully help add to the IFF picture. It does this by analysing the radar return from the target and comparing that return to a database of returns from known subjects to try and pinpoint what aircraft airframe it is looking at. One of the things it looks for is the number and rpm of the front compressor blades of the engines if it can get a look down the intake of the target. As this can have quite a distinctive radar return. Size, rpm and number of blades on a helicopter main rotor can be identified in a similar way. From what I understand during the period our F-16 was operating this technology was mainly used in support of normal IFF procedure rather then being used as a primary identification tool. This is mainly due to its relative unreliability and sensitivity to factors.

That’s just an off the top of my head rundown of it, I’m sure there are people here who could provide more details. Essentially in the sim it would allow you to lock up an aircraft and then it would spit out a reading on what aircraft type it is, say for instance “Su-27”. It’s already functional on the F-18 as far as I know.

Sorry dude, completely different timezone for me so the ohter guys were apparently first. 🤣😎 Ok, so your best answer (in simple words) is what Deano87 said about NCTR. Couldn't have explained it better, myself. And yeah, the F-16C should actually have that system as a core feature of its radar. Also, looking at the benefits of that system I hope you understand why I asked if we will see this system in our F-16, too because it can be tremendously helpful as you can probably imagine.

No worries. I understand it now. Thx for the reply tho.

I have spoken with the team, will still have some NCTR work on our todo list for the future.

thanks

Awesome, thank you BN. So, this means it is actually part of the APG-68v5. This is great news...

@BIGNEWY Hey, BN. Since quite some time has passed since I first asked if NCTR will be implemented to the DCS APG-68v5 I just want to ask for a heads-up. Is there any timeline on this, actually? This is quite an important feature so it would be really nice to have as the F-16 is getting more and more mature, right? Thanks.

This is still planned for later. When we have news on it's addition we will share, I don't have anything new at this time though, sorry.

Ok, thank you. Anyway, nice to hear this item is still on the list.
