After more than 10 years of development it finally fired a missile! That's an achievement in itself!

How long is the development time on an aircraft of this type supposed to take? It was near the end of 2006 when it took its maiden flight, and had a few hiccups after that....

Besides, is this just testing from internal stores? Doesnt mean it hasnt fired from external stores...

No, it didn't.

I dont recall that, not that I follow everything written on the F-22 either, I really wonder if it would be that big of deal anyways, its still on a rack, even if it opens from the belly, you would think that you could still fire it off in a fairly high g turn....

Actually, deploying Missiles in High G Situations was one of the things YF-22 could do that the YF-23 Couldnt do as well.

AIM 9X's can fire from Wing Tip Rails Fine in HIGH G situations,

Internal Stores are a bit tricky, but the F-22 and F-35 both use a similar system, so it shouldnt be a problem for the F35 to pull a 7 G Climb Out or turn, while dropping a AIM-120.

In a recent Four Corners (ABC TV Australia) episode on the problems with the JSF program they were not allowed to film the F-35A from the rear. Does anyone know or can hazard a guess as to what is sensitive about the rear end?

Ask the DoD because their rear end is sensitive too after LM bent them over.:D

I would bet they just don't want the exhaust to be seen. Radar waves deflecting off from engine fans have been one way to achieve IFF at long range ever since late 70's but these days they are blocked or hidden behind S shapped air ducts. The rear typically isn't protected on fighters due to potential losses of performance (only one I knew was F-177 and possibly B2 which aren't terribly fast you know :D ) so they are exposed. A detailed view from the rear could help adversaries devise a radar signature to identify an F-35 on tail aspect by radar, possibly the only angle where the F-35 isn't stealthy.

Could just be procedure for keeping people away from the exhaust. If that engine fires up, it`ll cook people.

Sometimes TV here talks about the F-35 and yea, from what I've seen, every time the camera man gets in an angle that allows him to see the rear a bit too close there's someone running in hand up on the cam saying 'you can't film the rear'. I think I recall it being more or less handled by the ground crew though, meaning a few parts were 'naked' that usually aren't when in flight.

I feel stupid asking... is that legit? I'll be honest... I didn't think the Bravo could use blower with the exhaust deflected.

Definitely not. No MV-22 is set up to carry a hose and drogue. That happens to be a very convincing PhotoChop.

I don't think the photo is real. It would not make since to allow the engine to go to AB when nozzle is deflected. Not only would it have a chance to burn through, it would make the aircraft tumble over. Now they are some aircraft that have to light their AB to be able to refuel, I know the Tornado has to do it, AFAIK, their high altitude performance is very bad when carrying weapons.

Edit,

Not all the time, but when refueling at some altitudes with heavy loads

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.
