The Viper ECM has both noise and deception based on the selected mode. Mode 1 and 2 are SPJ deception (range gate pull off) and Mode 3 is barrage noise.

thanks

Hi there @BIGNEWY, I was reading this topic (and few posts bellow), and there was actually talking about that modes 1 and 2 "are not" and "should be" deception modes.

Is there any actual explanation about deception mode in DCS? It seems that everyone is explaining differently to them selfs.

Have you tried them already? They are quite straight forward.

So I will try to explain how they work now in DCS:

-If you are in mode 1/2 (deception mode), the jammer will break the lock of any aircraft of SAM once they have locked you, and given you are at a certain distance (meaning if you are too close they won't do a thing). This mode is currently working in the same way as the hornet SPJ.
-Difference of mode 1 and 2 are radar priority or jammer priority.
-If you are in mode 3 (noise jammer), the ecm will work as all FC3 aircraft ECMs, this is, it will deny range information until burnthrough range. It will also deny lofting of Fox 3 missile if they are launched outside burnthrough range.

I think I dont miss anything about DCS current implementation.

In position 3, radar does not scan at all, so you know what that means 🙂

I'm still not sure if mode 1 & 2 actually do anything different technically than mode 3, except that they only XMIT when the aircraft is locked up, while mode 3 is manual XMIT.
To put it differently: Don't you get the exact same effect as mode 1 & 2, if you turn on mode 3 on manually if you get locked up?

Edit: I just tested this: If you select mode 3, wait to get locked up and then manually start to jam with mode 3 you can break the lock just like mode 1 & 2 do automatically.

DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!

Yes, I can confirm as I do this on a regular basis for SEAD / Wild Weasel: Stay in the outer 10-20% of the max engagement range of a known SAM with ECM off. SAM gets a lock on you and fires a missile. Get the ECM active to break the lock together with beaming or notching to get a moment to breath while looking for that smoke trail to reveal the launcher.

Lure the SAM to fire at max engagement range and shake it off with the ECM. If it's active the SAM won't shoot till you are at burnthrough range.

As with most things.. all the modes got their pros and cons.
