How many USB-C's for the whole Top Gun MIP ?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Waiting for delivery, I am thinking of how many entries I need for the whole set up.

If I am not mistaking,

-the UFC will require one (The hud panel will attach to the UFC via Sata) so x1

-each MFD will require one, so x3

-each MFD monitor will require one, so x3

so in the end its 7 entries.

Should I get two  4x  PCI-E to USB-C card (such as https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/delock-pci-express-x4-card-to-4-x-usb-type-c-1-x-usb-type-a-pci-express-30-x4-network-adapters-16780270#fullscreen=show) , or one will suffice with one USB-C HUB ? I suppose the monitors would be better on their own USB-C entry, while the UFC, and the MFD buttons could all go on one USB-C entry with a hub. SO in this case only 1 card with 4 entries will do.

Any opinion ?

After looking at the manuals last night, I think you'll need a third USB cable for each screen for power.  MFD needs one, screen needs one, and the screen needs a separate one for power.  That makes 10 overall - if I'm looking at the manual correctly?

so that would be 10 ?

question is, how many need to be directly into a USB PCI-E car and how many can be on a single port with a  (like a powered HUB)..

Just read some manuals. Thats 3 USB-C per MFD. One USB-C for the buttons, one for the monitor, and one to power the monitor.

So that would be indeed 10.. But on those 10, 3 for sure can go into a USB-C HUB for power only. the remaining 7 probably need to be plugged into PCI-E

Now, can we, lets say, regroup the 3 MFD buttos USB-C into one hub, that goes into ONE slot in the PCI-E, I hope so.

Fore sure, the 3 monitors USB for the image probably need their own slots.  So best case scenario you need 5 slots in PCI-E, and the rest through HUBs.

Long story short, its going to be some work 😉

Either way, looks like it's mainly USB 3 (not USB C) for most of the connections.  Somewhere there was a picture with 4 ends going into one USB 3 that looked like it will cut down on the number required.  Not sure we're going to get a good answer on this until someone gets there hands on the unit.

I agree to a total of 10 and that they are not USB C just USB . On the back of the devices they seem to be USB C but the end on the pc side are regular USB, except 3 of the 10. If you look at this pic from the D1 manual, 1 cable is labeled USB to PC HDMI? See pic I circled what I am pointing out and the cable they have in pic is all USB not HDMI on pc side. Meaning we may need 3 additional HDMI port!?

No, 2 x USB-C to A and 1 x USB-A to A. Top Gun MIP will require 10!

I don’t understand why a direct usb to pci connection is necessary and a hub wont work. I have two cougars and 3 other usb controller’s connected by hubs and they work fine

@MustangSally We had already established 10 total and I asked about the HMDI which I included a pic. Not clear what you are saying no too.

The question is. Of those 10, how many need to go directly into a usb C port in the pc and how many could be regroupe on a single USB port on the pc through a hub

I think that is a bit dissapointing - I was really hoping that this unit would help me tidy up my cable issues.... I run my cube sim screens and cougar MFD's ( current set up) all through powered hubs, if that helps answer the OP question, although the cubesim screens are 800 x 600 and use USB and the winwing are 1024 x 768 I believe? The same res screens ( 1024 x 768) I just got to go behind my Apache MPCD frames use an HDMI each, which was a right pain, as my card only has one HDMI outlet. Which is why it might shows USB3 to PC HDMI on the back of the unit in that manual illustration.

TBH, its a bit annoying we dont know for sure and not only that, if they are selling as a complete unit, why could they not make them with say all three bezel frames using one cable and the same with the power supply...... that just needs a simple mini hub in the unit and a simple AC split cable. The screens will need a cable each if they are HDMI.

I am defintely waiting to receive my package before ordering any USB C PCI card though.. because there is no definitive answer to all of this.

I also run my 4x thrustmaster cougar MFDS through a powered HUB.

what about the TOP GUN MIP monitors for each MFDs, for the display. Do they need to go through a USB-C or HDMI ? this is sooo confusing

more good info here:

at 9.33 they reconfirm that it is USB-C on the MFD monitor side but USB 3 on the computer side.. So basically it would mean its all USB-3 on the compuier side.

So I would say the monitors need to be plugged into a USB in the computer side, but all the others could go into powered HUBs

Yes, TOP GUN, 7 USBs in total. HUD attaches UFC via a SATA cable, and one power supply USB-C socket is available for each scerrn.(Optional)

Sounds like a powered USB hub would cover you whether you need the extra power cables to the screen or not.

Powered USB hub is strongly recommended, thank you.

Does anyone know if I can plug the MFD button frames into a non-powered USB 3.0 (A) hub? (I am not using screens as I am in VR). I would like to connect the MFDs into an anker slim 4-port USB 3.0 A hub, that daisy chains back into a POWERED USB 3.0 10-port Sabrent hub (so as to only take up 1 port on my main Sabrent hub labelled "MFDs").  Then I could cable manage these frames into the small/slim 4 port hub and have a single USB cable running off of them back to my main hub.

Would that work?

That will depend on how much power your sabrent hub is able to deliver to per port.

As Winwing said you need 7x available USB ports, ideally USB-A. While the Winwing devices use a mixture of USB-C ports and some USB-A ports, all of the cables provided by Winwing give USB-A connections to your PC. Specifically:

  • The UFC has 1x USB-C (device) to USB-A (PC)
  • Each MPD has 1x USB-A 3.0 (device) to USB-A 3.0 (PC) for the display
+ 1x USB-C (device) to USB-A (PC) for the surrounding button box.

(Note that on the MPDs I don't believe that you have to connect the USB-C outputs on the MPD screens, just the USB-A outputs.)

In answer to @dsc106, I am pretty sure that the MPD button boxes will work from the basic low amp USB 3.0 A ports in your Anker hub. The button boxes are low amperage with only dim LEDs and the current needed to work the buttons. It is the MPD screens that will specifically require a powered USB port to function correctly. The MPD button box works fine on my Startech USB hub while I have the screens attached directly to my PC motherboard backplate.

While I am looking through this thread, I am searching for info for what cable I need exactly to get these up and running. The set I have has 3x USB C to 3.0, and 3x USB 3.0 cables for a total of 6. All of these MFDs have a USB 3 and a USB C port. Since the MFDs and the buttons attached are two separate entites, I have to assume there is a cable for both, taking both type cables for power, and all 3 cables therefore are used. That still leaves me short on several other pieces, so what exactly am I missing here?

There are two USB C ports on the UFC plus SATA with 1 C in use. The SATA cable from the UFC powers the HUD panel. The 3x MFDs has 3 ports (USB Cx2 with one of them 5v power, USB 3.0 for HDMI) with 1 USB C and the 3.0 in use. Is this the correct way to power these units? I think Im missing a few cables, but need to know first.

All the cables you need should come with the MIP. As stated above, 7 USB-A ports are required. 4 low powered ports, 3x for the MFD bezels & 1 for the UFC, and 3 High powered ports for the MFD displays.
