TEMPEST.114 Posted January 28, 2023 Posted January 28, 2023 For months now I've been doing low level mission design with the chance of birdstrikes set to 1000. Never had one yet. I know IRL they are rare, in over 35 years of real life flying I've only had two, but then a) the world doesn't have a probability slider going to 1000% and b) I've never flown directly at a bird to induce a bird strike. So this leads me to the conclusion that a) impacts with animated birds doesn't exist because they're probably just shader objects (BAD) and b) the slider is not doing it's job (VERY BAD). 1
Flappie Posted January 28, 2023 Posted January 28, 2023 Birds that you can actually seen in the sim are not the ones provoking bird strikes. The ones provoking bird strikes are invisible (this is a very old feature). And the bird strike setting does work: 1 ---
TEMPEST.114 Posted January 31, 2023 Author Posted January 31, 2023 If it's 'doing it's job' then how come in over 18mths of missions with the slider set to 1000% has none of our aircraft ever had a birdstrike? And why doesn't the bird models cause them? if you bother to render them, they should have an effect. Invisible birds is bad enough.
razo+r Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 (edited) The visible birds dont cause them because the have no collision model. And if they had one, judging by how DCS handles collisions, you'd lose a wing or explode. And even if the slider is at 1000, the chance of getting hit is still a really low number. TEMPEST.114 Posted February 11, 2023 Author Posted February 11, 2023 What is the point of having a community when you don’t listen to it? Saying this is ‘no bug’ is just wrong.
cfrag Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 IIRC, bird strikes (with virtual birds, not visible one) are only implemented for FC3 models, similar to the fact that collision with power lines seems to be only modelled for FC3 models. It's not a bug, it's a feature And yes, a bit annoying. I disable bird strikes as I regard it as non-functional. 1

What's the point of a mission designer crafting an experience if the players can just disable everything?! Dumbing down DCS is always a mistake and a poor business decision. 2 hours ago, cfrag said: IIRC, bird strikes (with virtual birds, not visible one) are only implemented for FC3 models, similar to the fact that collision with power lines seems to be only modelled for FC3 models.
