I have been drooling over some Pit's people have been building and sitting here thinking how much my butt hurts from sitting in this stupid office chair for ages so I decided to do something about it.

Now while a full on pit would be awesome it would not be practical for me as the room I am in is not that big. When I have LANs hosted here I move out into the living room and I don't just play flight sim's. I play FPS shooters and racing sim's as well.

So my requirements needed to be....

Comfortable chair.

Needs to be able to move and get through doors.

Needs to hold all my controllers in the position I want, especially the pedals.

I need to be able to build it out of stuff I can get mostly for free.

I had no choice but to buy a chair and a car seat was the way to go for me. I bought a '97 Mitsubishi Magna drivers seat for $60. It is fully adjustable but with no electrics.

A was able to get lots of 2 inch box tubing as well as the particle board out of the bin at work.

My plan was simple, must be able to sit in chair and get through door. Apart from that I just started cutting and welding. None of the box tubing was straight so I just improvised as I went.

This is the chair under construction. Checking to see if I can reach the foot pedal area...

...and then the almost finished product in for testing.....

th_Shrubs_Game_Chair_2.jpg

It has worked out better then I hoped for. You sit down and pull the lever on the side and slide into position. The throttle, stick and rudders are in perfect position for me. I added a Buttkicker to it for some feedback and am also very pleased with that.

I have tried it out on race sim's as well as FPS and it works just as well for them. The car sim's I tilt the seat right back for the F1 feel:thumbup:

It is now in the trial process to see if I am truely happy with it and also that all my welds hold up. Once this part of the testing is complete it will have.....

..the wheels added to it so I don't have to pick up the heavy biatch.

..the inserts added to the floor for storage. (Foot one obviously already in)

..painted and generally cleaned up.

..vinal fake leather covering all the desktop surfaces.

..seat belt and whatever else rattles pulled off the seat.

..drink holder:D

Ahhh also note the "desk" part of it comes straight off by lifting upwards, that's how it will fit thru the door. Also after this is complete I will build a matching something to hold the PC etc as well as hold the monitors in position but for now I am happy.

Looks very nice! I've always thought about doing that myself with a used car seat. More comfortable then most desk chairs. It's nice how you can convert to a racing setup too.

Heck I'm still sitting on a decade old office chair. A nicer and sturdier then most, but it's old. The sofa cusion added a bit more life to it though.

I built a akers-barnes simpit. It can be cut out of 2 4'x8' sheets of 1/2" plywood. It assembles without fasteners of any type. I asked permission of the designers to modifyit to a narrower footprint. I just got some foam for it this morning and im likeing it more than my normal desk chair.

Car-seat...hmm...that's :censored: brilliant, why didn't I think of that:doh:

I've been looking at office chairs but haven't really found anything suitable..

I have wanted to do it for years but too lazy and spent hundreds on shite office chairs that are all the same in the end.... a piece of board with a tinny bit of foam between your but and the wood. A car seat tho is a different kettle of fish.

I would like to see an office chair that has....

Fully adjustable Lumbar support

Fully adjustable back tilt from all the way forward to all the way back (Sleep time flat)

Seat height front and rear is fully and independently adjustable

...all from little dials on the side....

... and can sit in for hours with no problems and great confort...

... for $60

All I had to do was make a base :)

One thing you have to be careful of.... everyone will say "Get a race seat" and that's all very good. Race seats look very nice... but screw that, I wanted comfort for hours on end.

So far very happy with the layout. I have to adjust the seat mounts as the rails are centered on my setup BUT the rails are not centered on the chair so I am sitting about an inch to the right of actual center....oops.

Also hoping to cover the 3 desktops, finish and paint all the metal, put in the tray inserts underneath and put the wheels on this weekend but may be being a bit optimistic. Might just sit in it and play for the weekend instead :D

Once that is done I then will have to make the monitor/pc module for it. The plan is the whole thing will eventually be able to roll around the joint with minimal stuffing around.

Now off for a drink, click the little button on the side and slide out ... sweet :D

That is very sweet. I made some calls yesterday to some of the junkyards and they told me I could walk around, choose what I want and it'll be 50bucks. Definately the way to go after seeing this. I will have to get a base fabricated though as I have no welding skills.

That is a great idea. Useful and perfectly functional, but lacking the delusions of grandeur that the F-16 replicas exhibit.

Very good work!

Ok I have been working on this just about every Saturday and can now say that I seem to be able to weld :D

Every week the front end has been cut of, modified and welded back in place. I think it is near perfect for what I want it to do (everything).

The position of the desk parts has been changed (lowered, brough backwards) and the left control pad (Throttle) has been shortened making getting in and out easier. There is just one 10mm bolt holding the table in place now that screws into a captured nut and the table does not move at all. (Laugh look at the 2x2 steel tubing hahah, meh it's free.. just heavy. Carrying this from the shed to the house is death!)

The foot area has been raised, brought back a bit and lengthened considerably to allow flexibility. There is still some things that need to be done to the chair assembly (Cable managment, cleanup, pain etc) but I am happy to say (omg so happy, the hours in this thing is retarded) I think I have nearly finished the chair design so I have started work on Part B.

Part B is the monitor/pc/speaker/holdeverythingelse bit.

It will eventually be on wheels as well.

The plan is for this to be able to move out into the living areas when I host a lan and to be able to be put back in the bedroom in 5 minutes when I am done.

The chair section will contain - seat, all controls, USB hub, Buttkicker.

The Stand section will contain - Monitors, PC, amps etc all isolated from the vibrations.

Basicaly the chair section docks into the monitor section. Discontect 3 or 4 plugs and then just roll them up the hall. Plug back in 3 or 4 plugs when docked. Connect to power/phone/antenna ... and play. 5 minutes max if I am really tired after a big lan.

Looking cool there Shrubbo. I have to second the thought on a real car seat vs race seat (or even ejection replica) while the two look cool they're not very comfortable! I use a modded Playseat for my pit and the the generic racing seat is very uncomfortable (even if its not a real seat) not to mention some racing seats arent adjustable just like my playseat

...and the beast grows in size..... It is now pretty much "self contained" and the only has a power plug, 2 lan cables, adsl and antenna cable that needs to be plugged in. Apart from that it is simple to push around the house and most importantly very comfortable. I can sit in the things for hours with no problems.

Shrubbo thats great -- I went to a local metal place and showed them a pic of what you did. No problem I was told but it would be $175 for labor plus they would not get to it for about 3 weeks. Arrghhh!

I looked for another solution and this is what I came up with:

http://www.suburbanseats.com/p-Universal%20Bus%20Seat.aspx?CatID=28&productid=381

I will order it this week. I will build what I need around it I guess. My wife is gonna have me hidden in the closet anyways so I don't need the mobility.

What did they quote you on materials? I would not have even started if I had not got a truck load of it for free. Down at the local hardware giant they have that 50mm box for $90 for 2 meters, I had a minor heart attack on that.

Yay for free stuff I say :D

Nah QLD bud, there is a thread on the buttkicker....

in short I love it. By itself it is nothing special really but it adds to the whole package and I do not like not having it switched on now for games/movies/music :)

Would you like that in metric or imperial tonnage ? :D

Seriously I don't know, but light it is not but it is very hard to turn your nose up at free steel. Another plus is it won't break... ever .... and if there happens to be an earthquake I will get under it!!

I never asked... once he gave me the "rough quote" for the labor I choked on my Skoal Bandit amd left the place.

Why bother? Just buy a few cans of Tremclad and spray it yourself.
